We're going to talk about best practices and ways to share the content within Gale In context science, and with the tools that are available for you to support your programming or what is happening in the schools in your area.

And when I share that content I'm also going to work in some of the tools and features that you have in your Gale resources we have 30 minutes together.

So I want to make sure to cover some of those key tools that support accessibility within this session to so that you have a good sampling of everything, but really Our focus today is going to be the content and finding that content and your search options

that you have available to find that information within this resource. So you're going to discover also at the very end of the session where you can go for additional training materials, I have a link that I'll share with you at the end of the session

that has all of the training materials for Gale In context science. Today's focus is going to be on scientists and inventors for Black History Month so to support your programming for Black History Month.

We're going to start with access and then I'm going to share with you an overview of Gale in context science, so that you understand the resource a little bit more.

And what all is there, outside of our focus today, and the scientists and inventors, but we're going to explore that content and look at the resource features, and then questions training materials and contact information will be at the end, except for

So those are the areas that you're going to find your Gale In context science resource to understand what Gale In context science is it delivers up to date information on some of the most studied topics so you're going to find biology, chemistry, physics,

math and science and Space Science within this resource. It also contains a variety of resources including topic overviews biographies is something we're going to be looking at and focusing on today but there's also news articles and images and videos

so it's multimedia, and then you'll also find experiments in STEM in simulations now, we're not going to touch on the experiments in simulations today again our focus on is on scientists and inventors, but I just want to mention that they are there within

this this product, and they do the nice thing is is they have their very own content type so if you're looking for experiments, you're going to find that content type and I'll explain what I mean by content types because we again are going to be looking

at the biographies and that specific content type.

Alright, so that is my very brief, PowerPoint, we are going to jump right into the resource and spend the majority of our time searching and looking at the different content that you have available.

So with Black History Month coming up next month and you may have already gotten your programming underway. You have maybe students are coming into your library that need additional support or they're doing some project work in the upcoming month.

Maybe you're working with teachers, and you have some connections there where you're trying to curate some information, this is what we're going to focus on today is finding those inventors and scientists within Gale In context science, so different than

our biography resource with biography Gale In contacts biography you have that ability to filter by person and you have when you're looking for that person search.

There's a few tools and filters available there.

With this resource we're making it work for us. So, this resource does look at exactly what I explained in that overview but looking at the homepage, I want to share with you where you can go right from the get go to find biographical content so we do

have topics of interest but right on the bottom of the page Browse Topics we do have a biography section. So right away, your students or your users can come in and access biographies and this is really helpful if they know or have an idea of the inventors

are scientists they're looking for. And if they're looking for.

You're looking for programming to support.

[00:05:27.000]
Black History Month so African American or black Americans, and those inventors and scientists going into biographies is a great way to pull those topic pages and I'm going to share with you some of those today.

And then as you can see below we have a lot of other categories where you may be in chemistry and biotechnology and there will be biographies there under biotechnology in on that topic page.

If you're not familiar with topic pages. Let me explain what they are there, what they are is a curated collection of information.

So, one we're looking at Lucille Adams Campbell who is actually someone that we are going to touch on today Dr Lucille Adams Campbell, and we have a topic page for her where there's an image and an essay overview and then content that has been collected

and organized in one place on this topic page, which it's really easy to link out and showcase individuals by biographies, and there's topic pages on your library website or wherever else you're sharing that type of content so topic pages are great tool,

tool, they're also great tools, supporting curriculum so in the classroom in the schools, your topic pages support curriculum. We're also they're designed based on what we're seeing with usage if we're seeing a lot of searches on a certain topic, then

our content editors will take a look at that and start pulling and curating a collection of information for you.

So that's the general understanding of what a topic page is now let's look at some of these biographies, I click into biographies, it's going to take me to all of those topic pages.

Now, do we have information within this resource on individuals outside of topic pages. Absolutely. We definitely do and they may be as I mentioned connected to another subject.

So if you do a general search, and you can do a general search on a specific person, or you could do a general search on African American or African American scientists or black Americans so you could make your selections that way too.

And I'm going to show you some different ways to do those searches but to start out we're going to start with topic pages they are the easiest way to find that curated collection of information.

And we have a few that we're going to take a look at so let's and I going to explain. Once I jump into the topic page like we're going to jump into Mae Jemison here.

You can see that we have this image. And here's the essay overview, because it's a biography, we're also going to have quick facts about this person.

So when she was born if there's a death date that will be there too She's an astronaut, and then you have other occupations, her gender other names her nationality.

As I scroll down, you have all of these content types and this is where biographies, under a different subject like, for example, maybe you're looking at Nobel Peace Prize.

And that's the topic page you're accessing, you could go into biographies and take a look at any biographies and even filter down using search within results here to filter down to African Americans are black Americans and find that information on a totally

different topic page so it doesn't always have to be a biography.

This is the route I'm showing you because you may want to highlight certain, certain individuals in your programming for Black History Month, because you really are focusing on individuals in their accomplishments and what they've, you know all that they've

contributed to society and to this world and highlight that within your library so doing that looking at this topic page, you can see we have featured content, which featured content is hand selected information by our content of years.

And we have some biographies there's some images, maybe you want to showcase one of the images that we have available news articles there's some audio files, chances are there may be some interviews here with Mae Jemison so which that's really exciting

you could highlight an audio file, academic journals that we have available magazines, if there's any safe vetted websites which we do have one here, they'll be listed, and then any related topic pages so space exploration, as it relates to me Johnson,

um, you'll see that this because of her being an astronaut that's why you're seeing that topic page at the bottom.

Okay. And that is going to be just a general topic page but you will find contents like if you were to click on space exploration and search within your results from a Jemison then you would see information there on that topic page too.

the essay overview. Here is a younger image. And you do have the citation is automatically attached to so that's great for students that are working on any projects, or you have any patrons coming into your library maybe they're, they're working on an

article or a document or, you know, they're just want to do some research and here they have that source citation maybe they're taking a course at the local college and, and they need that type of information you have this citation already attached even

to the images so those sorts citations are going to be on everything including audio files and video files.

What I love to is the Explore panel. So what you're going to find it I could be on I happen to be on an audio file and here's more like this where I can jump to more information or related articles on May Jemison based on the, the, the document or that

this happens to be a video that I'm on, and you're going to find this by go into biographies.

And these are from you can see, we have from different publications. This is from notable women scientists here's note from notable black American scientists.

This is from the world of earth science. So when I click into these biographies science and times it science and it's time so you're going to see different types of I mean they're all biographies, but you're getting a different viewpoint right because

you're, you're working with different publications. It's also a great way to compare and contrast that information. So let's say I really wanted to share this article from notable women scientists.

And this is a biography.

I can see that it's over 1200 words. Now I do have the content level and Lexile measure here that is very helpful for your school so your middle school, high school students that are coming in and looking at this information, maybe upper elementary This

is going to be higher level for them though.

It's really designed for our ninth through 12th grade, and beyond. So for our adults our undergrad, our patrons coming into the library, but it is helpful there it is there and it is very helpful for students because if you're coming from a public library.

You were all kinds of hats you have patrons can be students they can be college students they could be myself someone like myself who's an adult coming in for additional information or someone like my parents even so you have, and that's just a few of

the people that are coming into your library right so it's good to have these tools there to support all of your users, even your younger users.

Now we do have here's again that explore panel. We do have some tools to support accessibility I'm going to touch into a couple of these and then we're going to go through more search options.

So I want to cover those today, just so that you're aware, you do have the ability to translate the document into over 40 languages.

You have the ability to increase and decrease the font size.

you have the ability to change the display options, meaning.

What is the color displayed behind the text, this is really helpful and this is a new feature that was added.

Just in the last couple months.

So I can change it to gray, if that if I'm able to see that that helps me with the visual it's not the black and white, that I'm seeing or green is also here I also have some few a few font choices, including open dyslexic.

And I can even increase the line spacing. The Letter Spacing or the Word Spacing.

So again, the ability to support all of your users with these tools. If I want to go back to those default settings that option is here in the bottom of the box and I just clicked on.

I also have the ability to listen to the text being read aloud to me if I just click that listen button it'll start reading the text, and it'll start at the very top it's going to start with the title and work its way down.

If I want to save this content maybe this is something I definitely want to save. I'm a user I'm accessing this information, I found the link to the May Jemison topic page, which we're going to talk about get link in a moment.

On my library website, and I found this article and I really like it I want to I want to read it maybe I want to read it later I want to add it to my collection I have a folder running.

What can I do, well, I can send that information to Google, Microsoft, I can email it to myself, download or print.

I also have those options appear at the top. So let's say I do get to this point, I'm like, oh yeah this is a great one looked at the stars. I got an early life I'm getting later life after space what she's doing now this is a great document.

Well, at this point to I can still send it on to scroll back up. I can select sun to where I have Google Drive one driver email.

I can download or I can print.

Now the source citation is attached as I mentioned with the images. It's the same for the articles. But if I just want the citation that also lives up here so if I just want the citation, nothing else.

I have that I can copy paste it I can change the format I can choose where I'd like to export it to. So all those tools are available. Now let's say I want to highlight Mae Jemison in this topic page for my library programming, or I have a you know a

student that I'm working closely with and this is the person they're doing, writing a paper working on a project and this is the person they selected for Black History Month.

What can I do, how can I quickly share this information with them, I can use get link.

Get linked creates a persistent URL back to this exact spot to this topic page. Now I can use this at all levels, I can copy and paste and share it however I like I could be in biographies and grab a link to just this section, and it'll take them to all

of this information. I can filter down my content I've got these great filters on the right hand side, maybe I want to filter by publication date I just want everything from the past year.

Now this is going to limit my information, you can see it filters everything down so from the past year I have one audio file into academic journals well that might be a little too small of a selection.

So let me remove that.

And let's look at subjects.

Being that it's a biography, you're going to have fewer subjects than if you were in say, like I said, the Nobel Peace Prize, um, you'll have probably more subjects there when you have those broader topics.

I also have document types. maybe I just want to the going I'm sorry let me go into all content types. There we go.

document types so I switched I was an audio file that's why I was seeing those limits on there we go on subjects and document types because I only have two audio files so if you want to take a look at everything and apply a filter to future content news

biographies, all of the content types. Then, click on all content types here on the left hand side, and it's going to apply whatever filters you select to everything at once, then you can send a link so you can really filter down that content if you want.

You just want to showcase.

Maybe you want interviews photographs and audio file, a discussion.

And just the full articles and apply that.

I've added that filter and now it has filtered down all this content.

So maybe I'm highlighting more of the periodicals, or I want to highlight more of the, the multimedia the multimedia with images and audio I mean those are some great ideas to really filter down that content and and showcase it, and I can grab a link

now, and it's a, it will create a persistent URL, back to the spot. Now what will happen is my users will be able to access this information through this link, the more filters you add the larger that link does grow so be prepared, you can always pull

it into Bitly or tiny URL or just hyperlink it out from your library page, however you like, but it does grow so I just want to warn you when you click on it, you're not like whoa what happened there.

Alright so let's go back to the biographies homepage, and I want to point out a few other topic pages so Mae Jemison is who I just selected, what you have some, some other folks like Daniel Hail, hail Williams, who was this he was a heart surgeon.

One of my favorites is Katherine Johnson.

So you can see and we do have, unfortunately she passed away last year on her, that is coming up here, but we have some great information and some great images to available of her later life but the content and the, even the essay Overview The information

You know, becoming a human computer, and just so interesting that type of interesting information available in those biographies, I mentioned dr Lucille Adams Campbell, And let's take a look at her topic page.

And why am I not seeing it. Let's see. Did we put it under other we did, we put under Adams Campbell was looking for Campbell,

so you can see what her occupation is so I love the quick facts because it really just jumps you in real quick, gives you kind of a very brief overview, I that's why I also like the essay overviews that are attached on every topic page, because it does

give you some background information it's a quick way to pull content and information, you can i mean if this is someone that you're highlighting in with your within your library post some facts that attach it to the link that will draw people in that

might be very interesting and might be another idea.

You're looking for specific content within a topic page you can search within the results here, so that's always an option to.

Okay, so I think you're understanding the topic pages I can go in and go through all of them, and pick up more more folks but what I'm going to do is I'm actually going to show you another way to find content, and that way is using advanced search Basic

Search is straightforward. You can do a basic search everybody, pretty much knows how to do basic search so I'm not going to dive in there. that is very intuitive.

Now I will suggest you may want to look at different things you may want to do searches that are similar to what we're doing in Advanced Search today, and your basic search so keep that in mind.

I'm going to click into advanced search.

And we're going to talk about advanced search publication search and topic Finder. So an advanced search what I can do when I'm looking for a topic, especially when I have multiple terms, I'm going to want to use the special characters I'm going to want

to use the quotation marks. And the nice thing is with search assist when I start to type in a term and I'm going to type in a term up here. I'm going to leave it to keyword for field.

I do have some options where I have keyword if I'm looking for a specific subject if I want to search through the entire document. Those are some great options that I have available.

If I select each individual one like entire document, I can see that. What does it mean what does it mean when I have set the field to entire document, it means that it's going to search that entire document and it's going to contain whatever term I select

here, and I'm going to keep it at keyword today. And I am going to start typing in. So I'm going to start typing in African American and you can see searches this pops up.

The nice thing is if I select African American here from my list.

It will automatically put that term in quotation marks, so it's only going to look for African American together grouped in this order exactly like this hopefully you're familiar with quotation marks and you're probably like yeah to me we know this, but

I wanted to explain that a little bit further in case you don't but also just highlight that search assist does provide you with those quotation marks, so it's really helpful especially for users that aren't familiar with how to use quotation marks and

the benefits. Now if I look I'm looking up African American and maybe I want to make sure it's African American and scientist.

And let's see, it's not popping up here yet.

Now I don't really need to put that in quotation marks, but it's helpful. I can if I was doing a basic search and I wanted African American scientists, all together, I could do that.

And that's going to be more of that broad search, I'm looking for keywords for African American and scientists, and I'm going to pull back all those results.

So you can see I have 26 biographies. I happen to have for audio files. I have some news articles available academic journals magazine so this is what your search results will look like.

If you're not accessing a topic page. So this is another way where I can select Get link, and save share that information on my library website or, or maybe you want to share this information on social media posts you can do that to.

Another option is to go into advanced search.

I could change it from African American scientists to inventors, that's always an option to.

I could just do a basic search or keyword search from here on African American scientist, just make sure you put it all in quotes. Let me see. Actually, I'm not sure if my search system will pull this back correctly.

Let's do inventors this time and see what we get. So I'm just looking for African American inventors, but just biographies, So I'm not looking at experiments or audio files or statistics or simulations and not looking at any of those other content types

I'm just looking for biographies, and this is going to be a little bit smaller search results we have more scientists than inventors in here, but we do happen to have 43 biographies.

And these are African American scientists are inventors.

You can see a lot of them are coming from a certain publication, well maybe you're interested in that publication and finding content within that publication.

It's nice from this point I can click on notable black American scientists if I wanted to from here to take me to that content. Another option is under Advanced Search.

So that's just another search option to find content, last one I'm going to share with you is topic Finder. So let's go back to Advanced Search. And then I'm going to, I want to share at the document level how your users can save this content.

And this you really need to put in the quotation marks.

And the reason why is because you don't have search assist with topic finder, so

topic finder is a visual representation of your search results, it's interactive, you have tiles, or the wheel.

And you can see here I have black scientists right on the top.

And I can continue to zoom and maybe I want women or I here's history month that would be interesting to take a look and see what we have their national institutes maybe I want my biology.

Let's go into women. And on the right hand side trailblazing black scientists encourages women to follow suit. fighting for visibility so it filters down this content over on the right hand side which then leads me to it could be a document and article

image video, it's pulling back, all of that content at one and this is looking at the top 100 words from a subset from your top results so that's it's looking at those keywords and also available within graphics so that's why it's able to pull back information

from images to is because it is looking at the keywords within your graphics and graphics within the database so if I'm going to click on this first one, and I read this article This happens to be an audio file and I want to keep it.

So with the audio file if you download, you're just going to be getting the transcript. Okay, I don't want you to, to make the mistake of thinking, oh well I'll get the audio file or the video file.

And the transcript, it'll just be the transcript and that information is based on my understanding is that it's based on our agreements with our publishers because we do allow unlimited access to this content once if you're a subscriber you have unlimited

access your users can download and save this information as much as possible. So what I would suggest is using either Google or Microsoft and sending this information so you have the file and the transcript.

Same with the video or images directly to articles directly to one drive or Google, whichever you select and when you do, let's say I'm sending it to Google Drive have multiple accounts here, it lands in a folder, titled Gale In context science.

One Drive or Google Drive, you can still play that audio. That's a really cool feature a great way for your users to save content.

Okay. So we talked about saving content sharing content if you're at the document level or you want to share this this audio file again get link is right at the top available for you all to us, and then print, email download.
