[00:00:04.889] Hello and welcome today. We're going to [00:00:06.900] be talking about how you can support financial [00:00:09.429] literacy with Gale In Context: Middle School [00:00:11.689] and Gale In Context: High School. [00:00:13.858] My name is Amber Winters and I am your training [00:00:16.158] consultant here for the day. [00:00:19.489] And our agenda is a pretty simple one. First, [00:00:21.638] I want to talk about some of the key content [00:00:23.839] and topic pages. You're going to find within [00:00:26.120] both of the resources to help you as you're building [00:00:28.359] your financial literacy lessons and [00:00:30.510] to help your students as they start to learn on their own. [00:00:33.289] After that, we're going to walk through the resource. So [00:00:35.478] we can see some of the different workflows that are [00:00:37.560] going to support your learning community as [00:00:39.798] well as some of the different tools that are going to help you [00:00:41.868] really get this ingrained into your students [00:00:44.000] learning. [00:00:45.668] And then at the very end of the session, we should have time [00:00:47.959] for any questions that I'm not able to answer as [00:00:50.098] we move through the session and I'll have some [00:00:52.418] wrap up contact information for you. [00:00:54.740] So as a reminder, we're using the Q [00:00:56.950] and A feature for questions as opposed [00:00:59.079] to the chat. So if you do have questions [00:01:01.098] as we move along today, feel free to put them in [00:01:03.179] there. I've got it opened up on my screen, so [00:01:05.359] I should be able to answer them as we move along. [00:01:07.739] If we get a little bit backed up with time, then [00:01:09.879] I will wait until the end of the session to answer your questions. [00:01:12.219] But please type them in when you think of them and [00:01:14.698] I promise they'll be answered at the very [00:01:16.959] latest at the end of the session. [00:01:20.430] So if you're not familiar with Galen context, [00:01:22.500] middle school and Galen context high school, [00:01:24.698] these are our two cross curricular [00:01:26.849] and context resources designed [00:01:29.359] as you would guess it specifically for both [00:01:31.489] middle and high school level students. [00:01:33.540] So they do cover everything from social [00:01:35.778] sciences to science to el [00:01:37.829] a current events [00:01:39.819] kind of the the whole gamut of information. [00:01:43.250] And we do have a huge variety of content [00:01:45.290] types within these resources that are going to be [00:01:47.418] particularly helpful for you as you're trying [00:01:49.680] to create a more diverse [00:01:51.838] learning curriculum [00:01:54.198] with different types of resources. So we have [00:01:56.260] our basic reference articles, but we also have [00:01:58.308] news and magazines that we keep current. [00:02:00.569] You'll find a great collection of primary sources, [00:02:03.299] videos and images are really helpful. If you [00:02:05.388] are trying to get some multimedia [00:02:07.418] content within your lessons, we [00:02:09.649] also include some great statistics that are found [00:02:11.899] in our images bucket. So as you're [00:02:13.960] getting students more comfortable with reading [00:02:16.189] charts and graphs and things like that. You can [00:02:18.210] find a lot of that within these two resources [00:02:20.639] that can support your financial literacy teaching. [00:02:23.610] We also have great biographies and [00:02:25.800] for those of you who are working with more advanced [00:02:28.099] high school students, we do have academic [00:02:30.278] journals within Galen contacts, high School. [00:02:34.808] In addition to all of that content, we'll have tools [00:02:36.949] that we're actually going to go over today. Things like highlights [00:02:39.179] and notes, our citation feature, [00:02:41.210] we have the ability to translate both documents [00:02:43.508] and the platform tools themselves. [00:02:46.409] We have a list and feature, a text manipulation [00:02:48.719] that's going to make this resource really accessible [00:02:51.020] for all of your students with all of their needs [00:02:53.669] and a nice Google and Microsoft Integration [00:02:55.879] that we're going to take a look at as well. [00:02:58.028] And I do want to just pause here quickly to mention [00:03:00.778] if you learning community, your school [00:03:02.860] district has access to both Galen [00:03:05.118] context, middle school and Galen context [00:03:07.189] high school. [00:03:08.679] I would encourage you to promote [00:03:10.758] either to your students. So if you're at a high school [00:03:13.058] level and you have some students who are struggling readers [00:03:15.710] or maybe not quite at that high school level, [00:03:18.069] you may want to have them access scale and context [00:03:20.469] middle school where they're going to find a lot of similar [00:03:22.699] information, but at that lower reading level [00:03:25.379] and same goes for those of you working with middle school [00:03:27.500] students, if you have some students, maybe who are in eighth grade, [00:03:29.710] but are really ready to take that jump into [00:03:32.058] a higher level content, [00:03:33.699] direct them to Galen context high school and they [00:03:35.740] may find some material that's more suited [00:03:38.050] for them at that higher level. So even [00:03:40.669] though they're labeled Galen context middle school [00:03:42.679] and high school, if you do have access to both consider [00:03:45.469] what your students need. If you have higher [00:03:47.580] or lower achieving students, they may benefit [00:03:49.729] from cooking into one resource or another [00:03:52.588] because you'll find a lot of the same content [00:03:55.020] in each [00:03:56.219] but at those different levels. [00:03:59.879] And today I want to talk specifically about [00:04:01.899] our topic page organization. [00:04:04.189] It's a really nice clean way for you to find [00:04:06.469] content really quickly and to kind of have it all [00:04:08.610] house on one page. [00:04:11.288] So if you're not familiar with topic pages, we [00:04:13.319] have them created for some of the most studied [00:04:15.500] and most used and most searched [00:04:17.920] topics within the resource. So you'll see, [00:04:20.079] I've pulled forward here. Our financial literacy [00:04:22.209] topic page is one of the, the key [00:04:24.838] topic pages that you're going to want to take a look at [00:04:26.928] within Galen context, middle school. But [00:04:29.149] the top of all of our topic pages, we're going to [00:04:31.189] have a topic overview and this is going [00:04:33.420] to give you and your students kind of the background [00:04:35.569] and the base knowledge about whatever topic you're going [00:04:37.778] to be looking at. [00:04:39.170] So this is really handy to have if [00:04:41.298] you're just starting off your financial financial [00:04:43.309] literacy unit and you want to give students just [00:04:45.329] that intro, they may want [00:04:47.410] to take a look at this topic overview. [00:04:49.579] Also on the topic pages you're [00:04:51.670] going to have on this page section and [00:04:53.899] this is going to show them what content types [00:04:56.079] we have available for them. So you'll see here on this [00:04:58.238] page, we've got things like reference [00:05:00.250] works. We've got some news reports, some video, [00:05:02.480] audio files, those are usually podcasts [00:05:05.178] and magazines here as well. So this is going [00:05:07.238] to show them what they're going to be able to find on this topic [00:05:09.519] page. [00:05:11.428] And then at the very bottom, we have all of our content [00:05:13.798] organized and content buckets. So they're going [00:05:15.899] to see the first few entries in those buckets [00:05:18.540] and they can click directly in. So if they want to look [00:05:20.608] at all of the reference material, we have [00:05:22.949] specifically linked to financial literacy, [00:05:25.259] they'll be able to do that here. [00:05:28.358] And at the very bottom of our topic pages, you can't [00:05:30.389] see it just because I didn't have enough room on the screen. [00:05:32.639] We have our related topics and this [00:05:34.798] is going to help especially [00:05:36.869] your students who have trouble building their own search [00:05:39.209] terms. Move forward with their [00:05:41.220] learning and move forward with their research. You'll see [00:05:43.699] they'll be able to click directly into other topics [00:05:45.809] that have topic pages So after [00:05:48.088] they take a look, kind of at just the general financial [00:05:50.470] literacy, they may now want to take [00:05:52.548] a look at the different economic systems or maybe [00:05:54.819] they want to go deeper into money and [00:05:56.829] banking or something like that, [00:05:58.540] they'll be able to point and click right on our topic [00:06:00.720] pages and not even have to worry about building [00:06:03.028] their search terms. So this is great for really [00:06:05.350] those beginner researchers who aren't ready [00:06:07.619] to run more [00:06:09.829] sophisticated searches yet or [00:06:11.970] for students who are coming in and [00:06:14.048] have absolutely no idea what they want to look [00:06:16.250] at. Instead of trying to figure out what they should [00:06:18.259] search, they can really point and click all [00:06:20.338] the way through both of these resources and find some [00:06:22.379] valuable financial information. [00:06:27.160] Now, let's talk specific topic pages [00:06:29.350] that you may want to take a look at. So if you are planning [00:06:31.670] on working within Gillen context, middle school, [00:06:34.290] I've highlighted here. Of course, our main [00:06:36.670] financial literacy topic page is going [00:06:38.689] to be probably the place you're going to want to start [00:06:41.290] before you take a look at anything else. [00:06:43.309] But you also will have topic pages on things [00:06:45.528] like economics. We have one specifically [00:06:47.790] for money and banking [00:06:49.309] and we also have one specific for entrepreneurship. [00:06:52.238] So not only helping students [00:06:54.509] understand, you know how to save money, how credit [00:06:56.750] cards work, how bank loans work. [00:06:59.009] If you're teaching your students how [00:07:01.199] to have kind of that entrepreneurial mindset [00:07:03.259] or maybe you have an entrepreneurial class. [00:07:05.970] We have a topic page created for that as [00:07:08.139] well and I'll show you a bit later [00:07:10.410] how you can find each of these where we have them [00:07:12.428] housed. [00:07:13.798] But if you're planning on using gel and context high [00:07:15.869] school, you'll find some of the same [00:07:17.899] topics but we do have [00:07:20.269] a few different ones. So instead of financial [00:07:22.459] literacy, we have a topic page [00:07:24.540] related to personal finance. And that may [00:07:26.600] be the starting point that you want to take a look at. [00:07:29.738] Moving forward from there, they'll find a topic page [00:07:31.850] on credit. If they want to move into looking [00:07:34.139] at how again credit cards work, how loans work, [00:07:36.399] things like that. [00:07:37.548] We also have an economics topic [00:07:39.730] page here within Galen context high School [00:07:41.910] where they'll find more advanced information than what they'll [00:07:44.079] find within Gale In Context. [00:07:46.509] Middle school, same for entrepreneurship [00:07:48.689] and money and banking. You see the topics [00:07:51.259] are the same, but they're going to be at that deeper [00:07:53.509] level that more advanced content. [00:07:55.738] We also have a great Cryptocurrency topic [00:07:57.959] page within Galen context high school. So [00:08:00.759] if you're going that step further and having students [00:08:02.790] look at more advanced information, [00:08:04.850] the Cryptocurrency topic page is a really [00:08:07.028] fun one to look at and to show students just [00:08:09.129] because it is so popular right now. [00:08:11.040] You know, we hear about Cryptocurrency all the time [00:08:13.189] and this resource is going to give them some [00:08:15.269] good background knowledge. So um they [00:08:17.459] can cut through the noise that they may be hearing online [00:08:19.528] that might not be very accurate and really [00:08:21.670] get the facts about Cryptocurrency. [00:08:25.009] Now, as we go through, I want you all to consider [00:08:27.019] using this get link feature, especially if [00:08:29.028] you're planning on pulling content. If [00:08:31.259] you're a librarian, media specialist on the line [00:08:33.450] and you're going to be pulling content either for teachers [00:08:35.619] or for students to get them engaged with this [00:08:37.629] resource. Our get link option [00:08:39.700] is really handy. It gives you a persistent [00:08:41.849] URL to whatever page you're on, you'll [00:08:44.210] see as I click through, it's going to be on the majority of [00:08:46.288] the pages we look at today [00:08:48.869] and you can get a link to one of these topic pages [00:08:51.119] and send it out. You know, you know, your [00:08:53.330] sixth grade social studies teachers [00:08:55.369] are planning on starting their financial literacy unit. [00:08:58.058] You get the link for the financial literacy [00:09:00.099] topic page, send it over and here [00:09:02.308] you go. You have great materials that are going [00:09:04.399] to help support your lessons. Nice and simple. [00:09:07.779] So always consider using our G link. We'll take a look [00:09:09.869] at that here in a quick second when [00:09:11.918] we jump into the resource before [00:09:14.139] we move over to walking through the platforms [00:09:16.320] though. Are there any questions or anything [00:09:18.369] you want me just to quickly cover? Besides [00:09:20.678] what we just looked at? [00:09:25.798] Ok, don't see anything. We're nice and quiet [00:09:27.989] today. Not a problem. Let's go ahead and [00:09:30.070] jump over here, [00:09:32.590] almost signed me out. Let me make sure we're signed [00:09:34.769] in. There we go. [00:09:35.918] so let me first show you where those topic [00:09:37.950] pages are housed, you will be able to [00:09:40.070] find topic pages by searching. [00:09:42.219] But if your students prefer to browse instead [00:09:44.269] of search, if they're in Galen context, [00:09:46.739] middle school [00:09:48.798] and they scroll down here. [00:09:51.538] We keep all of our financial literacy topics [00:09:53.739] housed under the social issues [00:09:55.849] tile here so they can click in and find [00:09:57.889] all of those if they're within Gillen [00:09:59.969] context high school, which is the resource I'm [00:10:02.048] actually going to use for our walk through [00:10:04.070] today. When they scroll down [00:10:06.149] here, the financial literacy topics [00:10:08.279] are actually going to be found under business and [00:10:10.379] economics. [00:10:13.129] So let me click into that here and when [00:10:15.139] I click and you'll, I don't know if you noticed, let me jump [00:10:17.229] back here, but we have 78 topic [00:10:19.298] pages related to business and economics. [00:10:21.690] So if your students have decided to kind [00:10:23.788] of click and browse, just warn them that they're going to [00:10:25.849] find a lot on this page [00:10:27.889] not all will be directly related, of course [00:10:30.070] to um [00:10:31.798] financial literacy. Some of them you'll see [00:10:33.869] here are about you know, [00:10:36.029] agriculture, the alternative energy business [00:10:38.389] and things like that. But as they start to [00:10:40.469] browse through, they're going to find things that may [00:10:42.788] come in handy. So again, economics [00:10:45.210] is listed here. We've got credit down [00:10:47.418] below here. Consumerism is listed, [00:10:51.700] scrolling up and down minimum wage, [00:10:53.879] money and banking. So they have a lot of different options [00:10:56.190] to take a look at here. They'll even see different, [00:10:58.729] businesses listed. So maybe mcdonald's, [00:11:01.340] they can click in and take a look at what's going on, [00:11:03.558] related to mcdonald's. [00:11:05.889] So again, they can point and click to find exactly [00:11:08.000] what they're looking for. If they want to, [00:11:10.038] they can change their topics listed here. [00:11:12.440] So maybe they want to focus more on social [00:11:14.899] issues surrounding finance. [00:11:17.298] So again, things like minimum wage or, [00:11:20.259] you know, unions or things like that, they [00:11:22.450] can go here to social issues instead [00:11:25.710] if they do know exactly what they're looking for, [00:11:27.820] of course, they can run a search instead. [00:11:29.879] And what's great is if their search term has [00:11:32.099] a topic page attached to it. So let's go to that [00:11:34.239] personal finance. [00:11:36.149] top [00:11:38.340] by page that I mentioned previously. When [00:11:40.379] they start typing in their search, you'll see we have these [00:11:42.460] pre predictive text options [00:11:44.489] here and you'll notice that [00:11:46.519] the first three here are bolded. [00:11:48.629] So any results that are bolded [00:11:50.668] are going to launch students to topic pages [00:11:53.019] as opposed to just a standard search results [00:11:55.178] page. So let's click into that personal [00:11:57.479] finance one. [00:12:01.590] There we go. [00:12:02.599] And now I will point out that get link that [00:12:04.619] I mentioned before. It's in my toolbar up [00:12:06.719] top here. So if I wanted to save [00:12:08.859] this again, if you're a librarian pulling content [00:12:11.288] for teachers and you wanted to save this for [00:12:13.408] teachers, you can send out this link if [00:12:15.690] you're a teacher and maybe you want to use this topic [00:12:17.928] page for an activity you're doing in class or you [00:12:20.029] want to pop it into a project syllabus. This [00:12:22.460] is a nice way to do that. Just copy and paste [00:12:24.479] this link. It is a persistent URL [00:12:26.678] and it launches them directly to this page. [00:12:31.229] So scrolling down here [00:12:33.048] again, you'll see this is going to show us what different [00:12:35.279] types of content we have available here. [00:12:37.529] Since this is Galen Context High School, [00:12:39.538] you'll see, we've got a few, 100 and [00:12:41.580] 64 academic journal entries that they [00:12:43.599] can take a look at [00:12:44.940] images, videos, all that good stuff. [00:12:46.989] So let's go ahead and keep scrolling here [00:12:49.239] and you'll see, we do pull out featured content [00:12:51.308] that's focused on whatever the topic is. [00:12:53.830] It could be any type of content. Sometimes you'll see [00:12:55.979] reference works, sometimes you'll see interesting [00:12:58.509] videos and we do pull some of [00:13:00.519] those forward under the featured content. [00:13:02.798] We have our reference works listed here as well. [00:13:05.820] And I do want to scroll to the bottom here [00:13:08.418] to show you where you're going to find those related [00:13:10.428] topics. So again, this topic page, [00:13:12.479] I like to consider this as the very basic [00:13:15.489] financial literacy topic pages, just personal [00:13:17.889] finance and as they move forward, [00:13:19.918] they can get more specific. So we do have [00:13:21.928] that credit option here. If we want [00:13:24.048] to look at entrepreneurship, money and banking [00:13:26.259] in general, if they're ready to look at the stock market [00:13:28.379] and investing, we've got a topic page [00:13:30.609] for that here as well. [00:13:33.788] Now, let me go ahead and scroll up today. I'm going [00:13:35.889] to click into our reference [00:13:38.158] works because a lot of times that's what [00:13:40.889] teachers and students are looking for is just [00:13:43.019] articles to support whatever they're learning [00:13:45.080] about. So when I click into my reference [00:13:47.200] here, you'll see, I've got a whole suite [00:13:49.489] of different articles related [00:13:51.899] to personal finance [00:13:54.428] and I've got some great filters here that are going to be [00:13:56.509] helpful, especially since we have 34 [00:13:58.649] reference articles, that's a fair amount of articles. [00:14:01.330] We try to narrow it down when [00:14:03.349] they're on a topic page. So they aren't inundated [00:14:05.428] with, you know, a huge number of, of articles, [00:14:07.649] but 34 is a fair number. So [00:14:09.950] they can use our filters here on this right [00:14:11.979] hand side, maybe they want to filter based [00:14:14.190] on subject here. So goal setting [00:14:16.320] is a great one. If they want to learn a bit about interest [00:14:18.739] rates, they can narrow the subjects there. [00:14:22.048] They can also narrow based on document [00:14:24.330] type. So within our our content [00:14:26.889] types, we have more specific document types. You'll [00:14:29.048] see here. We have some topic overviews, [00:14:31.918] an event overview, a couple of tables listed [00:14:34.239] here so they can narrow it down that way. Sometimes [00:14:36.538] we'll have brief articles listed [00:14:38.668] here. So that's a nice way if they just want something quick [00:14:40.859] to take a look at, to narrow it down based [00:14:43.038] on the document type, [00:14:45.678] you'll see, we also have a search was all search [00:14:48.288] with an option here as well if they [00:14:50.349] want to search through these articles [00:14:52.859] and we have a topic finder. I'm not [00:14:54.950] going to click in topic finder just yet. I will if we [00:14:57.019] have a little bit of time at the end of the session, [00:14:59.288] but this can help students make connections [00:15:01.349] between different topics. So if they get [00:15:03.389] a little bit stuck, you know, they [00:15:05.469] need to [00:15:06.668] look for something a little more specific, but they don't know what [00:15:08.788] that thing is. Topic finder comes in really [00:15:10.820] handy, [00:15:11.840] but let's click into one of these articles [00:15:13.979] here. [00:15:16.599] Let's look into budgets and financial goals. [00:15:19.000] This is a nice one. [00:15:21.869] I mean, I think personally it's a nice one [00:15:25.269] and we've got a quick question from [00:15:26.849] pa all of these full articles [00:15:29.080] or abstracts [00:15:30.308] page, [00:15:31.960] the majority of our content is going to be full articles. [00:15:34.489] There is a small number of abstracts. [00:15:37.440] But for the most part, you're going to see [00:15:39.538] full articles only when we're talking about [00:15:41.580] abstracts and things, you're most likely going to see those [00:15:44.330] in the academic journal section as we'll [00:15:46.418] find the majority of those but, um, [00:15:48.700] I don't know the exact percentage, but [00:15:50.739] I would say upwards of 80 90% [00:15:52.928] are going to be full text, [00:16:02.320] right. So now I've went ahead and clicked into one [00:16:04.428] of our articles here. You'll see this is a shorter [00:16:06.519] 1, 900 words here. [00:16:08.469] First I want to show you this sidebar. [00:16:10.840] So these sidebars vary. Sometimes [00:16:13.158] you'll get key terms, sometimes [00:16:15.168] you'll get you know, talking [00:16:17.279] points or, you know, main topics of the [00:16:19.320] article. This one's got critical thinking [00:16:21.599] questions [00:16:22.710] and I love this because this is a great bell [00:16:24.989] ringer for students. You know, if you're just trying to [00:16:27.019] get students engaged while you're taking attendance [00:16:29.288] or whatever you need to do at the beginning of your class. [00:16:31.908] If you find an article with these critical thinking [00:16:34.090] questions, you can send this over to them, [00:16:37.009] you can send it over using get link if you want [00:16:39.080] just forward it that way or if you're using [00:16:41.178] Google classroom at the very top [00:16:43.190] here, you can actually send it over to [00:16:45.200] your classroom. So if you maybe want [00:16:47.379] to make an announcement and have students click into this [00:16:49.509] article, answer these critical thinking [00:16:51.788] questions, [00:16:52.928] you can certainly do that great for homework and again, [00:16:55.119] great for a bell ringer activity, [00:16:57.599] you can have them answer them together. [00:17:00.219] You also have the option to send any article over [00:17:02.739] to either your Google or Microsoft Drive. [00:17:05.180] This is great for you as educators, but also for [00:17:07.219] students, especially if they're planning on maybe [00:17:09.289] working in a group. And you want [00:17:11.459] to make sure that everyone in that group has access [00:17:13.759] to the content, they can share the content, [00:17:16.019] they can hit the send to button [00:17:18.858] and then send over e either to their Google drive [00:17:21.049] their onedrive or they can email it and [00:17:23.150] they'll be able to collaborate on this document together. [00:17:25.479] So it's a great way to save this information. [00:17:28.019] These documents can always be downloaded and [00:17:30.049] printed as well. If you or your students prefer [00:17:32.489] to have [00:17:34.219] the content, that way they'll be able to do that [00:17:37.959] scrolling down here. We also have this great explore [00:17:40.449] panel so this can help students move forward again [00:17:42.650] if they're not comfortable building search terms, [00:17:45.118] if they clicked into this article and you know what [00:17:47.150] it a it was actually really handy and they want to [00:17:49.199] kind of move forward with it, [00:17:51.939] they can find more articles that are similar [00:17:53.989] to this one [00:17:55.009] or they can find subjects that are related [00:17:57.150] to this. So if they don't need another article like [00:17:59.289] this, you know, they already got this down. Maybe [00:18:01.729] they want to learn more about goal setting, you know, they, [00:18:03.969] they kind of understand budgeting, but how are they going [00:18:06.130] to set their realistic goals? [00:18:08.439] They can click into this related subject [00:18:10.759] and move forward there. So just another step [00:18:12.868] in making sure it's simple for them to find [00:18:15.098] their content. [00:18:18.289] Now, if you do wanna share this out with your students and you have [00:18:20.479] students with a variety of different needs, a variety [00:18:22.828] of different um [00:18:24.509] access requirements. We have a lot of tools [00:18:26.588] that are going to help you with that. So if you [00:18:28.650] have students that need this work translated, [00:18:31.259] they'll find a translate button right here under [00:18:33.390] our kind of [00:18:35.459] article information here, they have this translate [00:18:37.818] option, [00:18:38.799] they can choose whatever language they like. [00:18:41.199] And this will translate the article for them. [00:18:43.559] They also have the option here to set an interface [00:18:45.660] language. So this is going to change [00:18:47.699] all of the tools and all of the navigation [00:18:49.930] into whatever language they need. So if I change [00:18:52.019] this to Spanish here, [00:18:54.539] you'll see my tools up top here are in Spanish, [00:18:56.949] my search bar, my explore [00:18:59.019] panel here, all of the different tools here [00:19:01.039] are listed in Spanish as well. So [00:19:03.059] students can actually have this whole platform [00:19:05.410] switched over to their language and it will [00:19:07.509] follow them along throughout the session [00:19:09.519] and then they'll be able to go in and just translate [00:19:11.759] each article as they move forward. [00:19:14.039] But let me switch this out because [00:19:16.049] I don't know Spanish, let's go back [00:19:18.130] to English here. [00:19:21.279] So we'll be able to translate that here. They [00:19:23.390] can also increase or decrease the font size. [00:19:25.750] So if they are a bit visually [00:19:27.818] impaired and they need that increased size, they [00:19:29.828] can do that here. [00:19:31.219] We've also got some other great display options [00:19:33.239] that'll help them out. They could choose the background color [00:19:35.309] for their page, whatever works best for them. [00:19:37.799] They can also choose a different font. We [00:19:39.910] do have a dyslexia font available. [00:19:42.390] So if you have students who prefer [00:19:44.549] to read with this type, they have that here [00:19:47.098] and we can also change the line letter and word [00:19:49.199] spacing again to make this really as accessible [00:19:51.809] as possible. [00:19:53.880] And what's great is this will follow students along throughout [00:19:56.209] their session. So once they set it up, how [00:19:58.309] they can best read it, it's going to [00:20:00.489] follow them along as they click through different articles. [00:20:03.509] But I'm going to jump back to default settings here [00:20:05.680] today. So [00:20:08.338] in addition to kind of those access accessibility [00:20:11.250] tools, we also have a listen feature. So [00:20:13.660] if students really just want this read to them, [00:20:15.858] they're having trouble reading it, even with these [00:20:18.180] kind of enhancements that we have here. [00:20:20.489] If they hit our listen to, I'm just going to pause this, [00:20:22.989] it's going to read through the full article for them [00:20:25.170] and it does actually read in whatever language [00:20:27.420] they chose. So if they translated this article [00:20:29.739] into Spanish, [00:20:31.118] when they hit listen and they hit play, [00:20:33.229] it's going to read to them in Spanish. So [00:20:35.309] they have that option here, they can also download [00:20:37.709] the, the AUD audio file if [00:20:39.739] they want to take this with them later and take [00:20:41.799] a look. [00:20:43.729] And they've also got a few settings listed here as [00:20:45.868] well. You'll see, they can choose what's [00:20:48.029] being highlighted as things are being red. [00:20:50.250] They can choose different colors for the words [00:20:52.358] and they excuse me, sentence [00:20:54.380] all that good stuff. They can also change [00:20:56.420] the reading speed. So it defaults to a medium [00:20:58.670] speed or they can speed it up or slow [00:21:00.900] it down [00:21:02.719] quite a few different ways for them [00:21:05.650] to access this content. [00:21:08.598] And another great feature is our highlighted notes [00:21:10.868] tool. So if you want students to [00:21:12.900] talk to the text or just to take some notes [00:21:15.529] as they're reading through, they can do it virtually, [00:21:17.910] you won't need to print out the document and hand them [00:21:19.949] highlighters and then try to collect the highlighters [00:21:21.969] after they can click and drag over anything [00:21:24.299] they think is important. When they do that, they can [00:21:26.309] choose a highlight color, they can [00:21:28.390] add any notes they want to maybe this is just [00:21:30.529] use this for my project. [00:21:36.420] You can save that and they can click and drag [00:21:38.588] and highlight over anything they think is important [00:21:41.130] again. Really nice. If you want them to talk to the [00:21:43.209] text and maybe highlight the main ideas that they're [00:21:45.328] going to be looking at. Or if this is an [00:21:47.358] opinion piece, maybe you want them to highlight [00:21:49.368] what the individual's opinion is in one color [00:21:51.759] and maybe their evidence in a different color. [00:21:53.848] There's a lot of different ways you can use these highlights [00:21:55.959] and notes to really engage students [00:21:58.439] and these highlights and notes are session based. [00:22:00.640] So if your students are planning on using these later, [00:22:03.250] you want to make sure they get this document out of the [00:22:05.269] platform. They can do that by sending [00:22:07.529] it over to their driver, emailing it, they can [00:22:09.608] download or they can print and it will bring [00:22:11.719] the highlights and notes along with them [00:22:16.868] and we have about five minutes. So I do want to show you [00:22:19.000] our topic finder that I mentioned previously. [00:22:21.880] that was found, let me click back to [00:22:23.979] just our reference materials [00:22:26.140] here. that's found on [00:22:28.578] our search results page or our documents [00:22:30.618] page. It's also found under advanced [00:22:32.910] search. [00:22:34.259] If students just prefer to go directly to topic [00:22:36.420] finder, they can do that by clicking into [00:22:38.539] advanced search and then topic finder. [00:22:42.959] And this is going to help them kind of narrow down [00:22:45.029] what they're looking for. So let's [00:22:48.390] just search finance here to see what comes [00:22:50.420] up when they run a search within topic finder. [00:22:52.739] They have this little interactive [00:22:55.088] piece here [00:22:57.309] that's going to give them some of the top [00:22:59.328] terms related to finance. [00:23:02.400] So they can start to click through because as you would [00:23:04.449] expect, finance is a huge search. And you'll [00:23:06.539] see, we've got a huge variety of [00:23:08.868] information, anything from companies. [00:23:11.588] So, you know, business finance to personal [00:23:13.729] finance, campaign finance, dancing, [00:23:16.170] of course, is usually a pretty big one. But since we're talking [00:23:18.449] about, [00:23:19.358] financial literacy. They may want to [00:23:21.368] click into personal finance. [00:23:23.368] When they do that, we narrow down the different results [00:23:25.578] they're going to find. So they've got 34 [00:23:28.199] results related to finance [00:23:30.509] and personal finance and they can take [00:23:32.729] it one step lower. [00:23:35.328] maybe they want to help. Just look about, [00:23:37.479] look at money, [00:23:38.880] they can click into money and now we've got here six [00:23:41.009] results as opposed to, [00:23:43.009] um, you know, the, the thousands, maybe tens [00:23:45.078] of thousands they would have gotten if they were to just run [00:23:47.259] a basic search for finance. So [00:23:49.630] this is a great way for them to click down [00:23:51.910] to exactly what they need. Maybe this [00:23:54.009] is really interesting to them. Eight easy steps to [00:23:56.140] set your finances up. [00:23:59.500] There we go. They've got this nice short [00:24:01.969] article. And again, they've got all [00:24:04.068] of those great tools now that they have that material. [00:24:07.689] And I will say a lot of educators have [00:24:09.920] students actually start with the topic finder. [00:24:12.118] So instead of running a search, they [00:24:14.130] have them [00:24:15.539] into advanced search, writes, topic finder [00:24:17.848] and that just helps them narrow down their results [00:24:20.068] instead of them, you know, searching, getting a huge [00:24:22.390] list. That's a little bit daunting. They have to [00:24:24.459] go directly that way. So that's one great workflow. [00:24:27.160] Again, I think when we're talking about financial [00:24:29.559] literacy, [00:24:30.799] utilizing those topic pages [00:24:32.848] and directing students to use topic pages [00:24:35.489] comes in really handy because it's that [00:24:37.650] nice, clean organized one stop shop [00:24:40.469] and it allows students to explore [00:24:43.049] on their own, but kind of in a controlled [00:24:45.150] environment. They still have one landing point [00:24:47.309] that you direct all of the students to. [00:24:49.539] so they have kind of that base [00:24:52.049] of where they need to be and then they can explore [00:24:54.390] on their own. It's a really nice feature [00:24:56.390] that I definitely recommend if you're planning [00:24:58.489] on starting a financial literacy unit is to [00:25:00.630] use those different topic pages. [00:25:05.459] Now, that's what I have for you all today, we've got about [00:25:07.750] four minutes left. So, are there any questions [00:25:10.309] on something I didn't, didn't cover or something [00:25:12.509] you want me to take a closer look at? [00:25:14.818] But type those into the Q and A. If there are, [00:25:17.078] I'm just going to [00:25:18.299] jump back to my slides here [00:25:21.979] and while you all are typing, if you are typing, [00:25:24.068] I've got some wrap up information for [00:25:26.209] you. So if you want to talk a little bit more [00:25:28.608] about your specific financial [00:25:30.759] literacy lessons or how you want to [00:25:32.969] implement this resource with your, [00:25:35.009] with your learning community, [00:25:36.739] you can reach out to your customer success manager [00:25:38.848] and they can speak with you one on one to really [00:25:41.039] go over what's going to work best for you some [00:25:43.189] different best practices [00:25:45.420] that they've found that they've developed over time. [00:25:47.848] If you don't know who your customer success manager [00:25:49.910] is, just send an email to [00:25:52.439] gale.customersuccess@cengage.com and we'll forward [00:25:54.719] you to the correct individual. [00:25:56.650] You also have access to a sales consultant, of course.
