[00:00:05.190] Hello, thank you for joining me today. [00:00:07.419] We're looking at topic pages today in [00:00:09.429] one of our 15 minutes to mastery classes. [00:00:12.398] My name is Amber Winters and I am a senior [00:00:14.589] training consultant here with Gale. [00:00:17.179] So I first want to say, well, [00:00:19.208] when we're talking about topic pages, these [00:00:21.408] pages are going to be found within all of [00:00:23.458] your in context resources. So whoever [00:00:25.780] is on the line, no matter what your resource [00:00:28.109] collection, these topic pages are going to be available [00:00:30.670] and come in handy for you. I will [00:00:32.750] say within Gale In Context: Elementary [00:00:34.908] and Gale In Context: Literature, they look slightly [00:00:36.990] different just based on at the [00:00:39.048] age level. We're trying to reach [00:00:41.329] as well as the content that's provided. [00:00:43.509] So if you have one of those resources, you can certainly [00:00:45.658] take a look after the session and you'll see how they're [00:00:47.840] slightly different but [00:00:49.630] the rest of the resources. So our other [00:00:51.719] cross curricular resources like gel and context, [00:00:54.029] middle school and high school. Our current event resources, [00:00:56.950] our science resources and of course, [00:00:59.109] our social studies resources all [00:01:01.450] have the same topic page formatting. [00:01:03.959] So we'll look at some examples [00:01:06.010] here even if you don't have that resource, [00:01:08.099] the example is going to be applicable for [00:01:10.219] you still. So [00:01:12.439] the goal of a topic page is to give your [00:01:14.588] users. So your students, if I have any K 12 [00:01:16.879] individuals on the line or your patrons, [00:01:18.939] if I have public librarians on the line, it's [00:01:21.388] to give them a [00:01:22.969] easy to reach landing point [00:01:25.000] that's going to pull together all of the content we [00:01:27.088] have in the resource about a specific [00:01:29.469] topic. So you'll see here on the, on my [00:01:31.808] screen, my screen, I've pulled forward [00:01:33.980] sports medicine as a topic page. [00:01:36.480] Uh So the goal is we want your users [00:01:38.829] to spend more time with the content as [00:01:40.870] opposed to looking for it. So we've built [00:01:42.980] out these topic pages for some of the most [00:01:45.349] searched and most studied terms [00:01:47.719] within the resources. And at the top of [00:01:49.799] the page, we give a brief overview. So that's [00:01:51.969] going to give your users the background of whatever [00:01:54.028] topic they're going to be diving into. [00:01:56.150] Then underneath that you'll see this looks similar [00:01:58.239] to what you would see if you just ran a search, [00:02:00.540] you're going to see the difference content [00:02:02.879] types, these different content buckets that we have [00:02:04.969] content related to this topic for. [00:02:07.219] So things like reference works, which [00:02:09.368] are gonna be those articles, [00:02:11.550] videos, academic journals. [00:02:13.849] And then underneath that, we organize things [00:02:16.020] a step further and pull out these different content [00:02:18.319] buckets and show the first three [00:02:21.000] results for each content bucket. So if [00:02:23.069] they're looking for a reference article, they're going to pull [00:02:25.169] those forward. You'll see on this, we [00:02:27.250] have some featured content. If they're looking for, [00:02:29.360] let's say an image, we're going to have an [00:02:31.469] image pulled out, ready to go for them [00:02:33.500] in a different content bucket. So [00:02:35.899] it's [00:02:36.860] like running a search without having to run a search. [00:02:39.330] You know, we pull all of those search results forward for them [00:02:41.500] when we organize it. So it's really just a nice [00:02:43.618] point and click way to find content. [00:02:47.419] Now, let's go ahead and look at those. Let's not [00:02:49.528] only look at how they function [00:02:51.960] but how we can find them within the resources. [00:02:55.849] And since today is pi day, it's March [00:02:58.330] 14th. Anyone watching this recorded, we're [00:03:00.399] gonna go with kind of a stem theme and [00:03:02.629] we're gonna walk through how you can find these topic pages [00:03:04.899] within Gale In Context: Science. [00:03:07.319] And again, here I will mention [00:03:09.389] how we're going to do this today. This process we're going [00:03:11.520] to walk through today works the exact same [00:03:13.659] for all of the other in context resources. So [00:03:15.699] if you don't have Gil in context science, you have Gil [00:03:17.758] in context high school. Totally [00:03:19.800] cool. You'll use the same [00:03:21.879] same method to get to topic [00:03:23.899] pages. [00:03:25.449] So let's go ahead and get started here. We're [00:03:27.669] gonna start right on our home page. If [00:03:29.729] I scroll down here we pull forward [00:03:31.788] three topics of interest. These generally [00:03:33.990] change monthly depending on what's going on. [00:03:36.490] If a big current event happens and that [00:03:38.599] might pull forward to a topic of interest. [00:03:40.860] but they generally change monthly. So [00:03:42.899] this is a good place for your users to start when they [00:03:44.960] really have no idea what they want to learn about. And they [00:03:47.000] may find something here. [00:03:49.319] Then underneath that, we organize [00:03:51.508] our topics into these different sections [00:03:53.788] here. So of course, this is specifically [00:03:56.449] focused on science because we're getting gal in context [00:03:58.699] science. [00:03:59.679] but you'll see here, we include topic pages [00:04:01.758] for people. So we'll have biographies listed [00:04:03.770] here. Of course, general topics [00:04:05.808] on different technologies and things happening. [00:04:08.659] We'll also have topic pages for [00:04:10.729] current events or historical events if [00:04:12.849] you're in one of our historical resources, [00:04:15.159] so users can point and click this way if they want [00:04:17.290] to. Let's say they're [00:04:19.129] really into earth and environmental [00:04:21.238] science. Let's say they can click [00:04:23.250] in here [00:04:24.410] and each of these topics listed. These are all [00:04:26.519] topic pages that we've pre created for [00:04:28.639] them. So they can kind of just click and [00:04:30.889] scroll down to see if there's something they're interested [00:04:33.069] in from [00:04:35.639] here. You'll see they have the option to change [00:04:37.920] the topic section as well. So maybe they [00:04:40.069] decided that instead they want to [00:04:42.100] look at physics and astronomy, they can [00:04:44.199] bump to our list of those topic pages here [00:04:46.439] as well. [00:04:49.329] And we can also view all topic pages. So [00:04:51.449] let's take a look at that. So you can see [00:04:53.600] it's a pretty extension, extensive [00:04:56.178] list of topic pages that we have within all [00:04:58.189] of our resources. You'll see, I can really just kind of scroll [00:05:00.639] and scroll. [00:05:02.439] so they do have the option just to click and browse [00:05:04.819] through that. Sorry, if you hear that thunder. It's, [00:05:07.278] it's a little stormy here in, Southeast [00:05:09.579] Michigan today. [00:05:10.829] [00:05:11.649] but they can kind of browse through and click [00:05:13.699] into any of these topic pages that they find, [00:05:15.709] interesting or helpful and [00:05:17.750] they can also find topic pages by searching. [00:05:20.028] So I'm going to jump back to home. So we have [00:05:22.199] a nice clean landing point [00:05:23.790] and I'm gonna search for artificial intelligence. [00:05:25.939] I don't know about you guys, but I swear I hear [00:05:28.009] about it every other second. [00:05:29.649] so when I start typing [00:05:33.389] out here, you'll see my predictive [00:05:35.500] text gives me something that's bolded up top [00:05:37.730] here. So anytime I see a bolded [00:05:39.809] term in my predictive text, that's actually a topic [00:05:42.238] page. So instead of just seeing a basic [00:05:44.660] search result, if I click into this, [00:05:47.040] it's going to pull me forward to that topic page. [00:05:49.178] So let's do that and take a look. [00:05:52.250] Here we go. [00:05:53.079] So now we're on our topic page again at the very [00:05:55.129] top. We're going to have our overview. [00:05:57.298] This is a great place for you [00:05:59.608] to send your your users to your students. [00:06:01.959] So if you're working with students, just to get [00:06:04.100] them started here, pull forward this overview, [00:06:06.449] we can hit read more and they'll be able to get that [00:06:08.600] full background here [00:06:13.088] back on our topic page. When I start to scroll down [00:06:15.399] again, you're going to see the different content buckets [00:06:17.619] available here [00:06:20.119] so they can just slowly scroll through and [00:06:22.238] find things that interest them. [00:06:24.600] And then at the very bottom of the page here, [00:06:27.259] we also include related topics. And [00:06:29.269] each of these are topic pages as well. [00:06:31.629] So realistically, your users can actually point [00:06:33.899] and click all the way through the resource and not even [00:06:36.009] run a search. You know, they can take a look [00:06:38.100] at artificial intelligence and maybe they see a lot [00:06:40.269] about Alan Turing. [00:06:41.809] and they're wondering who that guy is, how [00:06:43.910] he's related to artificial intelligence. They can [00:06:46.028] click right here into his topic page. [00:06:49.069] He looks a little bit different. You'll see, we have quick [00:06:51.199] facts at the top here. So this is about a person. [00:06:53.470] We've pulled those quick facts out. [00:06:56.660] But then underneath again, here we [00:06:58.730] have all of our different content types listed [00:07:00.928] really simply for your users. [00:07:06.809] Now, if you do want users to use these topic [00:07:08.869] pages as opposed to running basic [00:07:10.959] searches and kind of weeding through search results. [00:07:13.048] Another great way to find this content [00:07:15.259] for them is to use the get link feature. So [00:07:17.439] if you're pulling content, you're getting started [00:07:19.759] on a unit. So let's jump back to [00:07:21.920] artificial intelligence. You're getting started [00:07:24.178] on a unit related to artificial intelligence. [00:07:26.709] And instead of having your students just sign into [00:07:28.858] whatever resource, you want them [00:07:30.920] to come directly to this content. [00:07:34.160] We have a great get link feature here [00:07:36.389] at the top of this page. It's going to provide a persistent [00:07:38.709] URL to this page. So if you [00:07:40.798] yourself are finding content for your students, [00:07:43.220] I recommend doing that, find a topic page [00:07:45.379] that's going to be helpful that's related [00:07:47.540] to whatever you're going to be learning about. [00:07:49.899] Select get link and then you can put this link wherever [00:07:52.139] you want it to go. Maybe you're starting an activity [00:07:54.559] and you want students to explore this, maybe a scavenger [00:07:57.100] hunt you've built [00:07:58.379] and you want them to kind of pick through this topic page. [00:08:00.689] You can just post this link there for that. [00:08:03.028] You could put this in a discussion board. [00:08:05.048] If you're planning on a project, you could have [00:08:07.250] it set within a project [00:08:09.660] syllabus. [00:08:11.199] It's also great just to kind [00:08:13.220] of have on hand whenever you need it, you can [00:08:15.358] copy and paste this and it is a persistent you [00:08:17.379] are out. So it won't break. You're always [00:08:19.528] going to be taken right here to this topic page. [00:08:23.129] And your users will be able to kind of click through [00:08:25.209] and navigate however they want to. [00:08:30.369] And they do have another option to browse through [00:08:32.529] these topic pages. So again, they can browse [00:08:34.710] through from the home page or they can [00:08:36.879] search in the search bar and click on any bold [00:08:39.239] predictive text that drops down for them [00:08:41.658] or at any point as they walk through the resource, [00:08:44.119] they'll always have access to this browse topics [00:08:46.379] button here. [00:08:47.558] This is going to pull forward that full list of [00:08:49.599] topic pages just like as if I were [00:08:51.678] to have clicked, view. All [00:08:54.038] right here. [00:08:56.940] So again, they'll be able to just point and click [00:08:59.649] to find something less interesting to them. [00:09:07.269] Now, that's what I have for everyone today. This is a nice [00:09:09.359] short and sweet webinar just about how you can [00:09:11.408] find your topic pages and [00:09:13.460] how you can utilize them. And I do want [00:09:15.519] to mention we have a lot of pre created scavenger [00:09:17.950] hunts on our support site that utilize these topic [00:09:20.239] pages. [00:09:21.279] So if you're planning at all [00:09:23.639] to kind of start integrating topic pages [00:09:26.009] into your lessons, I would suggest taking a look [00:09:28.090] at those. We're gonna go ahead and jump since [00:09:30.178] we have the time today [00:09:31.989] to our support site, which is support.g.com. [00:09:36.070] And once we get ourselves loaded up here, [00:09:39.190] I'm going to go under our training center. [00:09:42.639] I go into my activities [00:09:47.629] and when I click into one of these scavenger hunts, [00:09:51.529] this is giving you a great way to use topic pages. [00:09:53.849] So this one specifically is related to [00:09:56.119] advertising [00:09:57.710] but we build these out for you. So you can forward along to [00:09:59.729] your students and then they're going to click through [00:10:02.369] the different articles and different content [00:10:04.469] types within this advertising topic page [00:10:07.099] to fill out these answers. We've got a huge collection [00:10:09.479] of these. So if you are trying to figure out [00:10:11.489] how to best get topic pages [00:10:13.690] into your activities into your lessons, [00:10:16.099] you may wanna take a look at these scavenger hunts and see [00:10:18.259] how we've done it for you and then you can [00:10:20.298] kind of build your own off of that. [00:10:23.859] So again, our topic pages, [00:10:26.070] a key point here is just that they are the basic [00:10:28.408] landing points for whatever [00:10:30.489] topic that your students are looking for. [00:10:33.048] It's a great place for them to start. [00:10:37.739] Now again, I didn't go through all of your resources [00:10:39.849] today. So if you have a specific resource and [00:10:41.889] you wanna see what topic pages you have available, [00:10:44.658] click into that resource, you'll use that same [00:10:47.000] walkthrough that I just showed you and you'll be able to pull [00:10:49.058] and find content there.
