[00:00:03.000] So welcome to your Mississippi Department of Ed training. This session is on Gale interactive science. My name is Tammi Van Buren and I'm your Gale trainer, any questions throughout the session please use the q amp a box that is available right there on [00:00:19.000] your screen. To give you an overview or focus of what today's session is going to be about it is on just one of your three Gale interactive resources, we're focusing on Gale interactive science today. [00:00:32.000] This is a great resource to supplement secondary science instruction also science labs and activities and research, you will find in this resource there are standards curriculum standards that are available and tag to each activity and I'll talk to you [00:00:49.000] a little bit more about that. So that is one thing to note in this particular Gale interactive resource, you do have those curriculum standards tagged there in the activities will also explore some content tools and features, and I will share with you [00:01:05.000] some tips and tricks for the scale resource. [00:01:09.000] Our agenda today I'm going to start first with an overview of Gale interactive science, and then we're going to explore all the different search options that you have available. [00:01:18.000] The content and workflow tools and I will I will talk to you a little bit more about the content that's there because you have activities, and also reference and periodical content. [00:01:29.000] I do encourage you to ask questions throughout the session, but I will stand at the end if there's any additional questions, I'll also share with you where you can go for training materials, and then contact information, mice my own contact information [00:01:43.000] and also you have Customer Success managers at Gale that are there for that one on one support. [00:01:49.000] To access your MD resources that you have from Gale, you can go directly to this support site and let me for those of you that are attending the live session today. [00:02:01.000] Let me share that link in the chat so that you have access to it for those that are watching the recording. You can see the link here, right on the screen. [00:02:12.000] and this link will take you to [00:02:16.000] this page where you can enter in your library name, and then click Proceed. Now, when you enter in your library name or use the drop down menu that we have here, then it will take you to a page where you will have all the direct links to all of your products, [00:02:35.000] what happens is to say, we're at Caledonia high school, and I want the direct URLs specifically for my school, I want to make sure that the location ID is built into those direct URL so this is why you would want to access and use the links for your individual [00:02:51.000] site. If by chance you go to that site and you don't see your school name. [00:02:57.000] Let me know if you especially if you're testing it during the session, let me know in the chat box or in the q amp a box, and I will make sure that the appropriate person connects with you about that so if you do test it out before the end of the session, [00:03:11.000] let me know. Otherwise you'll get that follow up email from me and 24 hours, and you can let me know them too so whichever one works best for you. But what you will see once you access your school name is you will see this product list so you sign in [00:03:25.000] with your school, the product list will be here for you with all the direct URLs right here it says location ID in parentheses your location ID will be built in there. [00:03:35.000] So this was just a screenshot of an example, but you can still be able to see your specific site location ID will already be built into the URL, and then you can copy and paste it and wherever you're using your Gale resources or any of your digital resources. [00:03:52.000] We have a lot of teachers that are using them if they have any websites or any, other type of outside the system where they're sharing digital URLs with their students in any way shape or form, they're posting them they're [00:04:07.000] also libraries post these on their websites which is really helpful if you are working closely with your librarian if you're a teacher and you work closely with your librarian at your school, they're fantastic at posting links on their library website [00:04:19.000] and it's a great starting point for students to access and of course there's some other options with single sign on like clever and class link and you're learning management systems canvas and school G. [00:04:30.000] Those take a little bit more setup. So I'm just getting you started with those direct URLs. The next step, you can connect with the or your administrator can connect with our customer success managers and they can help even more with that. [00:04:45.000] Okay, now let's talk about Gale interactive science. So this is where I love this resource learning comes alive with this resource it's engaging it's it, you have interactive models, they bring science to life. [00:04:58.000] It allows students to really better visualize and understand the concepts in biology, chemistry Earth and Space Science. It supports both middle school and high school curriculum and you will find the NGSS and Common Core State Standards tagged in each [00:05:15.000] activity. So that's really helpful information to. And with these 3d models that your students and teachers can manipulate they can pull them apart, they can rotate them. [00:05:26.000] They're really a great tool to utilize in any classroom in any science lab, especially if maybe you don't have the funding to support all of the different types of dissections or whatever you're doing in your science lab. [00:05:42.000] These 3d models really help supplement your curriculum, and that's what therefore, that's what the Mississippi Department and Ed had in mind for for for you all to supplement your curriculum and use them as a tool within your classrooms with your students [00:05:57.000] that you will find that the models the activities are also paired with reference and periodical content. So really it is that deeper dive into whatever topic you are in whatever term you are in. [00:06:09.000] You'll also find reference documents there too so they're all connected for you. [00:06:17.000] You can save and share content to further student connection some of the ways that you can do that is using, and this is with the, the periodical reference content you can send documents directly to Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive directly from your [00:06:31.000] Gmail resources with the activities, it's a little bit different linking system and I'll have to show that to you when we're in the product itself, but you can use the get link, also to create a persistent URL back to any spot within the database, and [00:06:46.000] then you can create assignments or pull content directly into Google Classroom. This is a great tool you're using Google Classroom at all, and you want to pull in activity into Google Classroom. [00:06:58.000] You can do that, and I'll show you how to do that right at the bottom of the below the summary you have some share options. Once you jump into an activity so we're going to dive deeper into all that information today. [00:07:09.000] So with that we are going to get started and jump right into the resource. Let me know if there any questions that you may have. [00:07:17.000] So let's first talk about the three different browse options that you have within this resource. [00:07:24.000] You're going to see right at the top you have the ability to search through different activities. You also have this browse activities bar, or I should say section over to the right. [00:07:36.000] And then below you have some subject categories, biology, chemistry, Earth Science human anatomy and you happen to have 3d printable models so if you happen to have a 3d printer, you can print off the printable models and have them around your classroom [00:07:52.000] or around your school library and wherever you're displaying that type of information. [00:07:58.000] So let's go into each of these different browse options. The first one is search, and that's pretty straightforward. [00:08:03.000] Everybody can do a search especially at the middle school and especially the high school level, you do have some students that have. I'm sure are familiar with searching information on the internet so doing a basic search is very standard information [00:08:19.000] for them. Well if I do a search on plants, or plant I just put in plant, everything with that term is going to be pulled back so you can see I have 13 different results. [00:08:30.000] The first one on the list is plant cell which we actually are going to explore today. But as I scroll down, you can see all of those activities if I select Search more results than that list would continue and I would see all 13 of my search results, [00:08:45.000] so straightforward. Basic Search right at the top of the page. [00:08:50.000] Let's look at a different search option. And the next one we're going to look at is the browser activities section. [00:09:00.000] Now when I click Browse activities I should have let me go back to that homepage so it doesn't look confusing. Now if I click Browse activities. Now you can see a change in the screen there. [00:09:10.000] I have all of the categories over here on the left hand side, including my Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. so I have all of them here listed. [00:09:23.000] I can select so right now it's showing me I have 219 different activities available. If I want to filter to just biology, it will automatically filter that content down and now I'm at 91 different search results. [00:09:41.000] If I want a multi select maybe I want biology and earth science and view all those activities, I can hundred and 14, and I can show more results as with the orange button at the bottom. [00:09:54.000] I'm going to remove science and biology, and take a look at chemistry, because I want you to see some of those activities that you have available. [00:10:06.000] And then human anatomy. [00:10:09.000] Here at the bottom where you're going to find blood circulation, you're going to find muscles and bones that type of anything human anatomy I should probably don't need to explain it to you all. [00:10:23.000] But even like the ear and the heart, that type of information will be here in these activities. [00:10:29.000] Let's take a peek at these common core state well actually let's go to next generation science standards they both work the same when I selected it selects everything. [00:10:38.000] And I can see below if you notice below each of these activities and they are alphabetical. I'm going to see both the net. Next Generation Science Standards and also the Common Core State Standards that the related to, and you could see them listed here, [00:10:53.000] here. They'll also be and these are called tags. So these tags you may also find additional search options so this is linked to the periodic table. [00:11:03.000] This one animal cells is linked to sell so there's another activity cells, where you could do additional research, and these tags are important to and your other interactive Gale interactive resources that you have access to, you're going to see that [00:11:18.000] tagging in that option for further exploration and their research, very helpful to have. [00:11:26.000] Okay, and your final option for searching let's go back to that homepage. [00:11:34.000] And that is through each of these different categories so it takes you to the same browse activities but it's only going to if I click into biology, it's only going to pull back the biology activities that I have. [00:11:47.000] So that's the different their difference there. Let me also share with you. [00:11:52.000] Your 3d printable models, just so you can see here's the list and you can download the file if you have a 3d printer and print these models off. [00:12:07.000] Okay, so let's go back let's go into, and we're going to browse activities. [00:12:16.000] And we're going to go into microbiology. [00:12:21.000] So I filter down to microbiology and I'm going to go into the bird flu virus. [00:12:29.000] Just take, take a couple of seconds to load. [00:12:33.000] Zoom tends to bog it down a little bit, but there we go pretty good today. So microbiology bird flu virus, I want to share with you from this that search results so I went into browse activities. [00:12:46.000] Want to microbiology and I selected one of the activity options there. I want to point out and talk to you about before I go into the fun activity. I want to talk to you about the bird flu virus. [00:12:59.000] And what you're going to see here so you have a summary, you have these tags microbiology you have the standards here. You also have some options to share, so I can share any of these ways including email, and Google Classroom. [00:13:15.000] If I wanted to share this activity in Google Classroom I would select Google Classroom. And let me see how this screen opens up for us here today. [00:13:24.000] Okay, it is opening in another screen. [00:13:27.000] Let me make sure I share that. [00:13:30.000] I can open up Google Classroom select my, and I don't let's go into biology. [00:13:38.000] Choose an action. so I can create an assignment, click Go. [00:13:47.000] At this point I can put in my title. [00:13:50.000] And this was [00:13:57.000] any instructions. [00:14:05.000] Let's see, I'm just gonna write activity here. [00:14:08.000] Okay. And then I can you have the options to choose points and when it's due and topic all from this screen. When I click Assign. [00:14:18.000] At that point I have the option to view. Let me go back because it's going to give you a black screen here in a hot second if I don't do this first. [00:14:28.000] And where did my classroom go. [00:14:34.000] There it is. [00:14:39.000] Only zoom showed everything at once it would make my life easier. OK, So now when I click View. [00:14:48.000] Here's something was announced to my class, here is my posts so I click on that post, click into instructions. [00:14:57.000] And there are my students have that activity directly linked here with whatever my instructions are [00:15:04.000] okay let me know if there's any questions on that but again that's at the bottom of your page. You can link directly to the activity so if you want to grab the URL back to this exact spot you can, or if maybe I'm on the fourth slide here. [00:15:19.000] And I just want. [00:15:22.000] I just want to link to my slide, I have that option to. [00:15:27.000] OK, so those are all options to share the content. Also below you're seeing related activities. So these are activities that are related to this term or this topic that we're in right now seeing some other virus options here. [00:15:43.000] So those are going to be linked out and available right here from one singular activity. [00:15:51.000] Okay, so we talked about ways to share and I showed you google classroom. [00:15:54.000] Let's go in and enter a different way I know you want, we want to jump into the activity but I have a another one I want to share with you, and it let's say this time I want to use my category of biology. [00:16:08.000] Take another path of searching. [00:16:11.000] And I am going to remove all of these filters and stick with cells. [00:16:19.000] And let's go down to I want you to see all the different cell options that you have here but we are going to go into plant so this one is a has it. Well, they all have great visuals, but I really like this one. [00:16:32.000] So the plant cell so you have the activity. You also have this reference information on the right hand side and we're going to come back to this let's work through the activity first, and then I'll talk to you more about this reference content, but I [00:16:45.000] do want you to keep an eye on how this reference content changes depending on where I'm at. Within this activity. So you are going to see this content and this is both reference and periodicals so you're going to be getting some encyclopedia information [00:17:00.000] here, it's pulling from two resources Gale In context science that you have access to. And then our periodical content actually lives in a whole other resource called general one file, and that is a resource that you is not part of your, your science resources [00:17:17.000] that you have access to. But the beauty is is you have the content here available so any periodical content that applies will be here in this documentation on the right hand side, I'm right next to your activities. [00:17:29.000] Okay, so let's talk about the plant cell. So we have some information in these activities you have information here on the left and I can close this box if I want to I don't know why I would want to but you could you can make this there's some different [00:17:41.000] views. Also, I can choose theater view. So here in the bottom right of the activity board. I can choose theater view now theater view gives me this exact I can move through this activity, it is larger on my screen, but I still have access to all this [00:17:57.000] information below I have access to the reference content, I have access to the related activities, and also the sharing options. [00:18:06.000] I can also make this. Okay, I always do this with my mouse, every time. [00:18:12.000] Let me change it to whole screen, so let me move. I can click and drag and move this wherever I would like to. [00:18:19.000] So this is what whole screen looks like so I have theater, and I can view this as a whole screen now if you happen to have any smart boards or anything like that in your classroom or you're projecting your computer. [00:18:29.000] This is a great tool to use in a whole group setting, and also individuals. Another tip is with these. Not only can the supplement your curriculum. They can support any labs. [00:18:41.000] Another best practice is using these for pre teaching or post teaching so before, maybe a lesson or a unit or I should say a lab is facilitated on one of these topics utilize the activities available so students are prepared. [00:18:58.000] I was a student that did not like dissections, so this would have been extremely helpful to me because there are animal dissections available here, where your students can work through and rotate and pull apart, or dissect. [00:19:13.000] Maybe it's a fetal pig that you're doing in your, in your building. And then also, it's great for review if students are and typically when I know here, and with our curriculum, where I'm at my high school students would have to go through the, everything [00:19:31.000] would be tagged so let's say it was a fetal pig dissection, everything would be tagged with not and numbered and they would have to be able to label the parts of the fetal pig in their tests, and they would walk through and see that, and then they would [00:19:46.000] label those parts. So this is a great review option to for those students to go through these activities, and also you know the the parts are labeled here so it's really helpful as a review so there's a bunch of different best practices for using Guilin [00:20:02.000] context interactive, or Gale interactive science in your classrooms. [00:20:08.000] Let me get out of this view, and I'll go back to theatre view. [00:20:16.000] And let's work through this activity. So, what I can do if I click into the next one now I have the option here to tap or the arrow on the right hand side to go to my next slide, or I can use the option at the bottom to select the next, the next slide [00:20:33.000] here too so both those are available. Now I can if I wanted to pull this apart to view it a little differently I can, [00:20:45.000] I can by right clicking. I can rotate and turn this around. [00:20:52.000] I can go to my next slide, it will reset. Every time I click into the next slide, it'll reset the last one. [00:20:59.000] And here again, I can pull this apart by clicking and dragging. [00:21:07.000] And the nice thing is to okay so I've separated these pieces, only this one is labeled. If I put my cursor over top of any parts I've, I've selected or any anything I've pulled apart in the activity, it will give me the label for that part so there's [00:21:23.000] the nucleus. [00:21:27.000] You just have to leave it there for a couple seconds and then it will come up that term. [00:21:32.000] Okay, again I can rotate, I really enjoy the, again, to rotate right click, and you can move it around. I really love the Rotate option, especially when you're talking about dissection. [00:21:46.000] Because you can really move and pull apart I also in the heart activity that's one that I like to turn and pull apart, not pull part of her that didn't sound right. [00:21:57.000] Right. But you know what I mean, really, to really identify the parts of the heart. It's can I find it really helpful and very interesting to learn about. [00:22:07.000] Okay, so now another thing let me get out of the, the theater view because as I'm moving through Remember I said keep an eye on the reference. That's what's happening over here on the right hand side. [00:22:18.000] So if I move to another slide my reference documents are also changing to identify or talk more or give more information about the slide that I'm on at the very end, the quizzes are there so you have quiz one two and three, and you're going to find the [00:22:37.000] quiz options in the individual activities. There are some introductory activities available and I will share those with you at the end and they're great starting point I really wanted to dive in deep here first. [00:22:52.000] In case anyone attended the other sessions that I facilitated and really dive into those activities, the introductory I just want to point out, they exist, and they're great starting point for your students or teachers in your building or even the librarians [00:23:09.000] if they're working with students, the quizzes. If I click into the quiz you have some options. This one is where I can select it's a multiple choice. I can't remember I think that one's incorrect so when it's incorrect. [00:23:21.000] I get the red X. [00:23:26.000] Of course it's, I know it's, I looked at it and I knew the answer before I did it. I'm just clicking, and then quiz to this is where I'm dragging and dropping it. So, when I selected nucleus and put it above the nucleus. [00:23:42.000] It gave me that nice green screen so I was correct so you can drag and drop that might be part of the activity or the quiz. [00:23:49.000] And then this one again is the multiple choice, but all the answers to these quiz questions are in the activity slides so they might be here, and one of these activities slides so if a student struggles haven't go back and review. [00:24:03.000] Okay, so let's talk about what you're seeing over here on the right hand side and what tools we have to support accessibility if there's any questions let me know what you have available is and I am on just the end of the slides I can go back to the first [00:24:19.000] one. So I reset it. And you can see this documentation on the right hand side. [00:24:26.000] Again this is reference and periodical content. I have some options, I can actually translate the text here, all of these tools apply strictly to my document on the right, strictly to this text on the right. [00:24:41.000] So if I wanted to translate this text I can do that I have over 40 languages available we are using Google Translate for this, I can decrease or increase the font size. [00:24:54.000] Let me decrease it so you can see that I also have some display options where I can select what color I want behind my text maybe the black and white it I'm struggling with that, and having gray or this off white or more of a paper look available. [00:25:11.000] I also have some different font options including open dyslexic, and with, I can also not only with open dyslexic but with any of the fonts, I can increase my line spacing Letter Spacing or Word Spacing. [00:25:28.000] And then I select Done and there I have. [00:25:32.000] So you have some display options to suit or support any accessibility needs that are in your classroom. You also can listen to the text being read aloud so if you wanted to listen maybe you're working through the activity, you want to listen to the text [00:25:47.000] at the same time, you can select that listen button, the Translate feature if you've selected translate and let's say you've selected Spanish and then you select Listen, it will also translate the language that your students are hearing the text in so [00:26:01.000] it'll translate it to Spanish. [00:26:03.000] You have some options to send Google, Microsoft email download or print. These are what we call our quick send options you also have some tools up at the top. [00:26:13.000] You have basic search so if I wanted to search this is going to take me out to gala in context science if I do any searching, because that's where this content is coming from. [00:26:24.000] I also have advanced search so understand the difference that this search at the top the search box at the top is searching through activities. This basic search box is going to search for reference content. [00:26:35.000] So, two different things. But I do have the option to site. [00:26:42.000] And for my citations, I have multiple formats available and also multiple choices where I can export them to. [00:26:50.000] I can send to, which is Google Drive one driver email. [00:27:01.000] I can also download. [00:27:03.000] There I click the center and it was going into my Google Drive, download, print, get link get link creates a persistent URL back to any spot within this resource. And this would take you to this reference content so this get link is different than the [00:27:20.000] link to activity here. [00:27:22.000] This link is linking to the activity. This link is linking to this content. [00:27:29.000] Okay. [00:27:30.000] And then highlights and notes. This is a great feature if I wanted to do any type of annotating, I can highlight the text, select the color, maybe this is for my paper. [00:27:42.000] Save it. I need some, maybe I need some stat information. Here's some stats, which is, it's not but you know what I mean. Also, and then what I can do at this point if I choose to send it to Google Drive Microsoft OneDrive email download or print. [00:27:59.000] Not only will this article or. This document but anything I've highlighted so I will get this yellow highlighted text in my Google Doc. So when I send it to Google Drive it turns it into a Google Doc when I send it to Microsoft OneDrive it turns it into [00:28:13.000] a Word document, but everything I've highlighted still exists. And then what happens to my notes is below the citation once I send it to Google Drive below. [00:28:23.000] And, again, any of the places I send it. I tend to use Google Drive as an example a lot, but if I send it below the citation will be the text I've highlighted and any notes I've taken. [00:28:37.000] So, and I also have one other option where I can view all my highlights and notes, and that will take you to just anything you've highlighted and any notes you've taken. [00:28:48.000] Let me know if there any questions on any of that information. [00:28:54.000] Um, but the best practice of mine is to always send it if you've done any highlighting send the document. [00:29:00.000] Keep it have the whole entire document, even if you just want the notes that you've taken or the highlighted sections with just the notes, be sure to send the entire document that's that's my suggestion always a best practice so you have it, and it lands [00:29:14.000] in a folder titled Gale interactive science in your Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive. [00:29:20.000] So and, and it'll live there until you choose to delete it. [00:29:24.000] Alright so we're right towards the end of our time here. Let me know if there are any questions or you want me to go over anything again. The last thing I want to share with you is internal linking if you've noticed some of these terms are in blue, and [00:29:38.000] they are linked out where I can find related articles on cells. I can click into any of these articles here that I have access to, and continue my research. [00:29:49.000] So that's what you're seeing why you're seeing those hyperlinked out. [00:29:53.000] Let's go back to the PowerPoint just so I can remind you have the resources that you have access to your other Gale interactive resources. So science is the one we went over today. [00:30:06.000] You also have access to Gale interactive chemistry, which we are going to be covering in the upcoming weeks here I believe that one might be next week. [00:30:15.000] And then also human anatomy. So Gale interactive human anatomy. Now there is a little bit of chemistry and a little bit of human anatomy in Gale interactive science, but if you want that deeper dive if you're teaching chemistry at the high school level [00:30:29.000] or you're teaching it in your classroom and you want to maybe you have an AP class, I highly suggest going into Gale interactive chemistry. Same for human anatomy. [00:30:40.000] The next webinar we have coming up is Gale and context science, and that is on Tuesday next week at two o'clock central time. And I'm sorry that is goes from two to 230, not three o'clock. [00:30:52.000] That is listed on your support site that you have access to that I shared that link with you earlier. Here's a direct link to all of the training. And that's what you're seeing on the screen. [00:31:04.000] So this will take you to any of the upcoming, and all of our recordings are listed there too. [00:31:11.000] And then finally the support site so the link I gave you takes you to the page that we've created for the Mississippi Department of Ed the site that we've created, but at any time if you click into the banner, you can go to all of this, these materials [00:31:26.000] on the Gale support site. So the link I provided for you is here, but you're going to find training materials and tutorials on the Gale support site. And this link will be in your follow up email also so you'll have one directly to the page that we've [00:31:41.000] created or the site for the Mississippi Department of Ed and also the Gale support site so both are in your follow up email, but those watching the recording here they are. [00:31:50.000] You'll also find principal tools posters resource guides tip sheets available, and then electronic tools web banners social media posts there's email templates, all you have to do is put in your information, all of that is going to be located in the marketing [00:32:05.000] materials section on the support site. So if you're looking to promote these resources you want to reach out to your school community you want to post information on Twitter. [00:32:15.000] You can find everything you need we've already created it for you. [00:32:21.000] And that wraps our session again my name is Tammi Van Buren I'm your Gale training consultant. Customer Success managers are there for your one on one support. [00:32:30.000] If you have not heard from them yet. [00:32:42.000] So, but you can vary if you are interested in reaching out to them to get that one on one support, you can contact them at Gale customer success at cengage.
