[00:00:00.000] Welcome everybody to our [00:00:02.299] Fight Fake News: Harnessing the Power of [00:00:04.500] your statewide Gale resources [00:00:06.700] for Texas. I am Stacey Knibloe [00:00:09.099] the trainer who primarily works with TexShare [00:00:11.500] and I have my partner-in-crime with you [00:00:13.500] here today Tammi VanBuren who works [00:00:15.699] with those of you who will [00:00:17.800] take advantage of the tax question [00:00:20.000] resources. Welcome Tammi! Thank [00:00:22.300] you so [00:00:24.699] we are going to be going through some best [00:00:26.899] practices for pointing your users [00:00:29.100] to resources that [00:00:31.300] they can rely on and find authoritatively [00:00:33.500] We know we're kind of speaking to the choir here with our [00:00:35.500] our librarians [00:00:37.899] for you to be able to kind of take what we show you [00:00:39.899] today and turn that around for your user [00:00:42.000] so for all your students [00:00:44.200] your patrons everybody who uses the [00:00:46.200] library and we thought we'd approach this I [00:00:48.399] just coming at the [00:00:51.000] entire state of Texas and get us all together [00:00:53.000] here on the cob shelves to [00:00:55.200] kick off we thought we'd [00:00:57.200] share a little lost I'll look at [00:00:59.200] what it used to look like when we were finding fake [00:01:01.299] news back [00:01:03.299] a few years back but now of course [00:01:05.299] if we share something on Facebook it must [00:01:07.400] be true so but [00:01:13.700] we have course in the [00:01:15.700] Library business you know that that's not [00:01:17.799] the case so what we want to do [00:01:20.000] is put your resources [00:01:22.200] to work in Texas and [00:01:25.000] you have a [00:01:27.000] nice variety of resources from both text [00:01:29.200] TexShare and she knew text Quest and [00:01:31.200] text they're combining them there [00:01:33.200] We wanted [00:01:35.200] to take a look at just a couple today [00:01:37.799] from Gale that you can use to point [00:01:40.299] your users to for when they're looking for [00:01:44.700] you know divisive issues but also just [00:01:47.000] regular kind of hard science data [00:01:49.200] you've got resources to help back [00:01:51.400] that up there was that the tech specialist [00:01:53.700] resources on the left [00:01:56.000] and the TexShare content [00:01:58.200] over on the right and some [00:02:00.200] of you may have heard the exciting news [00:02:02.400] that TexShare [00:02:04.500] year is going to be adding a couple new resources [00:02:06.599] from Gail starting July one this is an [00:02:08.599] announced at TLA so [00:02:10.699] maybe the word has gotten around but we're [00:02:12.699] really thrilled that you're going to be able to access [00:02:14.800] Opposing Viewpoints In Context [00:02:17.000] the other public and academic Library [00:02:19.400] starting July one this [00:02:21.699] is the database Tammi's going to be showing you [00:02:23.699] and how you can put some best practices to use in the [00:02:25.699] library for getting users in there [00:02:27.699] really exciting [00:02:30.000] I miss been available for several [00:02:33.000] years now and just overall it [00:02:35.099] Gale it is one of our most popular resources [00:02:37.800] and certainly you'll [00:02:39.800] hear more from Tammy about what I can do for you they're [00:02:42.599] also going to be getting Chilton Library so for all [00:02:44.599] those folks who do their own [00:02:46.599] auto repairs and maintenance you're [00:02:49.099] going to be getting that in both text [00:02:51.800] and TexQuest so that's something [00:02:54.099] that's coming as well the [00:02:56.699] basis of course from Gail word publisher [00:02:58.800] we've been around for years and if you put our content [00:03:01.099] outline so what makes [00:03:03.199] these more authoritative than maybe [00:03:05.300] just going to Google and doing a search talk [00:03:08.099] a little bit about how they get put together and [00:03:10.400] what we do at Gale to make sure [00:03:12.400] these are places you want to send [00:03:14.400] your users so Gail [00:03:16.500] as I mentioned is a publisher so [00:03:18.699] we produce a lot of our own content we've [00:03:21.699] been doing it for over 65 years we have [00:03:23.699] many award winning titles. These are [00:03:26.099] respected Publications its [00:03:29.199] original content; it's curated content [00:03:31.199] you're not getting back a million articles [00:03:34.699] you're getting back a nice curated selection [00:03:37.000] of content we've chosen for the databases. [00:03:39.000] much more manageable [00:03:44.599] you're creating it all and in one [00:03:46.599] place and it's been curated and chosen because [00:03:49.300] it's authoritative we [00:03:53.300] work with partner Publishers to provide their [00:03:55.400] content as well so again, we [00:03:57.400] don't publish news content so we work [00:03:59.400] with sore to the Publishers in that Arena to [00:04:01.900] bring in their newspapers to bring in a [00:04:04.300] academic journals to bring him magazine [00:04:06.800] multimedia system [00:04:09.300] to put it all in one place in. And again [00:04:11.300] provide a safe place for research [00:04:13.699] and because we're in a [00:04:19.399] more global look at the [00:04:21.699] the contents when you're in our [00:04:23.699] resources [00:04:25.300] So each database as we build [00:04:27.399] them the same way that we you know [00:04:29.399] put together our books we apply that same message [00:04:32.699] you our databases. Each database has subject [00:04:34.800] subject specialist who are choosing the [00:04:36.800] content it goes into the resource designing [00:04:39.600] how it works, working with [00:04:42.000] as as an excellent point out [00:04:44.100] working with Librarians teacher students [00:04:46.500] to find out what we need in these resources [00:04:48.800] not only contact [00:04:51.000] but tools and we're going to be showing you some [00:04:53.000] of those today. So there [00:04:55.300] are subject specialist [00:04:57.300] a whole team of them that are building each [00:04:59.300] of these databases that were going to look at that [00:05:02.000] time is dedicated to it and [00:05:04.199] for those of you in a K-12 setting [00:05:06.199] you may have seen this already but all [00:05:08.500] of our in contact databases are aligned [00:05:10.600] with State and National curriculum standards [00:05:13.000] So again going back to what [00:05:15.300] do our users need we're looking [00:05:17.500] at curriculum on what's being taught in the classroom [00:05:19.500] and how can we align to it so [00:05:21.899] all of our focus goes into [00:05:23.899] producing these authoritative resources [00:05:26.300] to [00:05:35.500] take [00:05:38.899] advantage of so we're going to show you some tricks for [00:05:41.100] doing that today so [00:05:43.199] that gives a little background we've [00:05:45.600] got a question in the chat from [00:05:48.300] Jennifer will just be sent out after your done why [00:05:51.399] don't you know for screenshot the absolutely I can provide [00:05:53.500] this to you, I'll put it up in Google Drive and [00:05:55.600] and share that with everybody so [00:05:58.500] that you can take advantage of these slides happy [00:06:00.600] to share this with you! [00:06:08.399] go ahead and move on that's going to turn things [00:06:10.399] over to TammiVanBuren, our K12 [00:06:12.899] training specialist who [00:06:14.899] works with very often in Texas and [00:06:20.699] I live in Buffalo, New York and anytime we can get out of the cold [00:06:32.699] in the last year and he coming up [00:06:34.699] on you may have met me and [00:06:36.899] I'm looking forward to heading down [00:06:38.899] to Texas again starting [00:06:40.899] cash I think I'm looking [00:06:44.600] forward to that but I'm excited to talk to [00:06:46.600] you about Opposing Viewpoints In Context [00:06:48.800] this is one of my favorite databases. I have to say I love all the In Context databases. [00:06:56.500] Being K12 it really is geared toward all markets, but we do look at [00:06:58.500] those curriculum and state standards [00:07:00.800] and align this product [00:07:08.300] and our In Context products to those standards as Stacey had mentioned. [00:07:10.500] So, with Opposing Viewpoints In Context when you are talking about Fake News [00:07:12.600] this is a great product to turn to for all markets. K12, your patrons at the public library and at the academic level [00:07:15.000] we have all different levels within the product itself. [00:07:17.100] But it does cover the hottest social issues [00:07:20.500] you so you're going to find those topics [00:07:22.500] that are being discussed anything [00:07:24.600] from death penalty to immigration [00:07:27.199] to legalizing marijuana to cloning [00:07:29.699] so you're going to find the [00:07:32.699] It is a cross curricular product it [00:07:34.699] does support different classes [00:07:36.699] Science, Social Studies, Current Events, Civics classess [00:07:44.399] language arts, even history [00:07:46.699] you can make the connections between what happened in US History and World History [00:07:48.800] to what is happening now. Unemployment is a great example [00:07:51.300] comparing the Great Depression to unemployment [00:07:54.500] So those types of items, too, you can use [00:07:56.699] this product for and then the [00:07:58.699] database itself it does give [00:08:00.800] the pro/con viewpoints but we [00:08:02.800] don't tell you this is Pro and this is Con [00:08:04.800] because want really want people to develop [00:08:07.199] their own opinion using [00:08:08.300] safe, vetted, authoritative content [00:08:10.300] and especially students. We want them to develop those critical thinking skills. So, both sides are always presented in this product. [00:08:20.899] You are going to find: reference articles, interactive maps, images, infographics [00:08:22.899] multimedia so it's really quite [00:08:24.899] a fantastic product and I can't [00:08:27.000] wait to show it to you thanks [00:08:29.199] Stacy. Absolutely [00:08:33.500] and I think you're able to start [00:08:35.600] sharing your screen now we are going to have a live [00:08:38.000] demonstration of opposing viewpoints [00:08:40.200] or feel free again in the chat or in the Q and A let [00:08:42.799] us know if there's something you want Tammi to click on [00:08:44.799] or explain. Especially for [00:08:46.799] those of you who may be new to it from the [00:08:50.000] public and academic Library so give [00:08:52.399] you a little sneak peek [00:08:54.399] here. Thank you. [00:08:56.700] And Stacey, I lost all the Q and A when I changed screens, so if [00:08:58.700] anything comes in... I'll keep an eye on [00:09:00.700] it. Thank you. Ok, so we're jumping into the product. A few things I want to show you, if you have worked with Opposing Viewpoints before [00:09:08.600] all our In Context have received an [00:09:10.600] enhancement so they look a little bit different if [00:09:12.700] this is all new to you fantastic, you're here right at the right time. First thing I want to point out, I'm going to pick a couple things and Stacey will also [00:09:21.700] show you some great tools to so [00:09:23.799] you're going to get both just in two different products [00:09:25.899] So, the platform itself can now be translated. Up here at the very top it is defaulted to English, [00:09:32.700] but you can change it into 34 [00:09:35.600] different languages I'm going to show [00:09:37.700] you what Spanish looks like and what it does, is it actually changes the navigation tools. So, here you can see Search has been changed and [00:09:44.700] all of the tools that the top along with [00:09:46.799] what we have below here [00:09:49.000] to. Our call to action buttons have [00:09:51.100] all been translated and then [00:09:53.100] when you are in an article all the [00:09:55.100] tools within that at that article level [00:09:57.700] and even after topic page level, which I'll cover [00:09:59.899] have all been translated to [00:10:01.899] so that's going to be found at the very top. I'm going to go back to English. [00:10:06.700] And translates all those tools [00:10:08.799] for you are you can also sign [00:10:11.100] in with Google or Microsoft I have [00:10:13.200] done both just because I want to show you a [00:10:15.200] couple features using those tools and those workflow tools [00:10:17.600] and what [00:10:20.899] if you are not you don't have to sign in as soon as [00:10:22.899] you log in, I'm just taking it really basic here. If you decide you want to send information to your Google Drive or OneDrive at that [00:10:30.799] time you'll be prompted to sign in, if you're [00:10:32.799] at the article level on when you want to save [00:10:34.899] a document so don't feel like you have to sign [00:10:37.100] a lot of K12 they like to do this as a best practice and have their students sit down and login right away. [00:10:43.100] As soon as I am signed into Google [00:10:45.299] I am already into classroom too. [00:10:47.399] So if you are a teacher and are using Google classroom [00:10:49.500] or librarian or media specialist you [00:10:51.899] log into one in you're in both, which is fantastic [00:10:54.000] so on the home page you're [00:10:56.000] going to find a lot of great subject [00:10:58.399] categories with topic pages [00:11:00.700] we have more than what [00:11:03.700] we have in the database is more than the Topic Pages [00:11:05.700] the information that we have on the Topic Pages [00:11:07.799] but what I love about the topic pages [00:11:09.799] is in the show you one [00:11:11.899] of our newest one is [00:11:14.299] that they are Collections [00:11:16.500] and they are curriculum aligned [00:11:18.799] we do look at the products at least once [00:11:21.100] a year and align them to national and state standards so [00:11:24.000] all the content within the product is [00:11:26.000] curriculum-aligned and where you can find under [00:11:29.100] curriculum standards you can find [00:11:31.100] information that is been hyperlinked [00:11:33.100] out right within the product I do want [00:11:35.200] to show you this this real quick so let's go [00:11:37.299] to Texas and [00:11:39.899] I'm just drilling down to exactly where [00:11:42.200] I want to go to social studies High School [00:11:46.299] and you can see as I keep going [00:11:51.600] I'm clicking right into the standard that I'm [00:11:53.600] interested in and here is the information [00:11:55.700] that's hyperlinked out so now if I click on one of these hyperlinks, it will open in a new tab and take me to that content and this is what I have. [00:12:04.799] So if there is a topic available it'll be here at the top [00:12:07.000] and then all the different content that [00:12:09.500] is available for that state standard [00:12:14.399] and again that's under Curriculum Standards right [00:12:16.600] at the top. Okay, so [00:12:18.799] I want to share with you too and then I am going to go right into a topic page and show you some of those great tools and then hand it off to Stacey to finish up and she is going to share with you [00:12:27.899] the next product, but what I wanted to share with you [00:12:31.299] was there are actually we [00:12:33.399] pulled the top five searches for TexQuest [00:12:35.600] and they happen to be Gun Control, Death [00:12:38.899] Penalty, Zoos and Aquariums, Abortion [00:12:41.700] and Social Media and I was interested [00:12:43.799] in the social media because what [00:12:46.399] we are going to talk about today is [00:12:49.700] I'm going to look for Fake News on [00:12:51.700] Social Media. So, if we're talking about Fake News [00:12:53.899] we do have a [00:12:55.899] topic page for that and this [00:12:58.000] one is focused on fake news on social media [00:13:00.100] and since there is a topic page associated [00:13:03.500] with that search result [00:13:05.799] it is highlighted or [00:13:07.799] bold. If you can see the difference there [00:13:10.899] when I click into it it takes [00:13:12.899] me to that topic page and [00:13:15.100] here we have what I love about our topic pages is you have a great image and an essay overview. A great place, especially [00:13:23.100] for K-12 to really get an [00:13:25.200] idea if this is something that they want to write [00:13:27.600] there to work on their project or do their research [00:13:29.600] paper on or collaborate [00:13:31.700] with other students also [00:13:33.700] for patrons and academic [00:13:35.899] level, a great starting point there's a lot of great [00:13:38.000] information just in this essay overview [00:13:40.399] but then from here you can go [00:13:43.000] to different parts of different content types within [00:13:45.500] this topic page all related [00:13:47.600] to the subject fake news on social media [00:13:49.600] so we have featured viewpoints, viewpoints and the list goes on and if we have statistics available, you will find them here and then there is you multi-media, images, video [00:13:59.100] audio. Another thing [00:14:01.100] that we just added is Related Topics [00:14:03.500] and it's moved it wasn't [00:14:05.600] a different area but I want to show you at the very bottom. So, when I click on Related Topics, it's going to take [00:14:10.899] me to the bottom of the page and you can see [00:14:13.799] I am I did search for fake [00:14:15.899] news on social media but all the different areas [00:14:18.100] that your students or your patrons can [00:14:20.799] jump to our faculty members so [00:14:22.899] we've got quite a few different areas. Social Media, Twitter [00:14:26.299] Wikileaks I've had numerous [00:14:28.799] conversations with my own children about [00:14:30.899] what is real news [00:14:33.000] and what is fake news. We have websites [00:14:35.399] these are great websites to I've used a few of [00:14:37.600] them myself to really check [00:14:39.799] some of those facts and [00:14:42.000] then statistics too. So, you can see a lot of great content [00:14:50.000] and it's all here in this like [00:14:52.000] I had said authoritative content, vetted [00:14:54.399] safe environment for your students [00:14:56.600] and patrons to learn [00:14:59.100] so I want to jump in to show [00:15:01.100] you some of these features that can be used within [00:15:03.100] the database itself I did [00:15:05.100] mention Google Classroom, I want to point out [00:15:07.799] one of the things if you're kicking off [00:15:09.799] a unit or if you want to share information and [00:15:12.000] you are using Google Classroom it's really easy [00:15:14.200] to pull an entire topic [00:15:16.200] page right into your classroom and [00:15:18.299] this is at the larger level so [00:15:21.899] we could go into a content type like viewpoints [00:15:24.600] or all the way down to the article level and [00:15:26.700] pull it right into your Google Classroom [00:15:28.799] so you do have to have the classroom [00:15:30.799] setup first [00:15:33.799] I have theirs my civics class and [00:15:36.100] then I just chose one of my classes [00:15:38.500] and then from here I can [00:15:41.899] create an assignment, ask a question, make an announcement if [00:15:44.100] I make an announcement which I think if you're [00:15:46.100] kicking off the unit is a great one to use all [00:15:48.600] I do is put in [00:15:56.200] my title I can choose [00:15:58.299] a topic if I want and then I post it [00:16:01.299] and then what we do is we offer the [00:16:03.299] option to view your Google Classroom so it's going to [00:16:05.299] open a new tab [00:16:07.200] here's my classroom and in a [00:16:09.200] hot second we're going to see...there it is [00:16:12.899] so now my students will [00:16:14.899] get an alert that I added something to my [00:16:17.000] classroom and from here they [00:16:19.000] can click into [00:16:21.100] go right to that topic page very [00:16:23.399] simple very quick a great [00:16:25.700] feature to share and use. So, [00:16:27.799] let's go back and I'm going to close those tabs out. I want to share with you a few things that are unique to [00:16:33.899] Opposing Viewpoints In Context. The Featured Viewpoints and Viewpoints [00:16:36.399] so the Viewpoint Essays and I'm going to go into [00:16:38.700] Viewpoints [00:16:41.000] The Viewpoint Essays, you can see here are listed [00:16:43.100] on the right hand side, are a little different [00:16:45.600] than just our standard documents that you find [00:16:49.200] because what they have one [00:16:52.100] thing that we've done, we've pulled out and [00:16:54.100] highlighted this area that the article [00:16:56.100] commentary but we have these questions so [00:16:58.700] you're developing those critical thinking skills or maybe patrons are like what do I need to think about, this might help them read through this article and think [00:17:05.099] okay if you're some questions and I want to consider [00:17:07.099] So, great [00:17:09.299] tool, especially at that K-12 level. I love this, because the students can read these questions and [00:17:17.500] find the answers below. Now [00:17:19.700] I'm going to show you in our tool box on the [00:17:21.700] right hand side real couple different things and [00:17:23.700] I'm going to show this article with [00:17:26.000] the highlights and notes before I do I want [00:17:28.200] to point out citation tools it's listed at the [00:17:30.200] top of my toolbox because it is the most popular [00:17:32.200] at the bottom of every [00:17:34.200] single article and document or image [00:17:36.400] that you have that you find within our products [00:17:38.799] you will always find [00:17:41.000] the citation and it's always the defaulted into [00:17:43.299] MLA 8th Edition now but [00:17:45.799] if you wanted to change [00:17:47.900] the format you have that option by just clicking [00:17:49.900] citation tool you could [00:17:52.000] change it to APA or Chicago, you can also [00:17:54.099] choose if you want to export it somewhere else [00:17:56.099] besides being downloaded [00:17:58.099] right onto your computer [00:18:00.099] so you can export it to EasyBib or NoodleTools or right into your Google Drive or OneDrive. [00:18:06.799] what you can also do what you can send [00:18:08.900] this entire article into your Google drive [00:18:11.099] or in to OneDrive. Again [00:18:14.200] the article can be pulled into Google Classroom. So, you can make it an assignment to read [00:18:19.599] this before tomorrow's class right [00:18:21.599] and then be ready to discuss or [00:18:23.799] you can ask questions to go along with it [00:18:25.799] in your Google Classroom. So, [00:18:28.599] different options that are available now I'm not going to send it to [00:18:31.000] my Google Drive yet because I want to show you how to [00:18:33.099] use the highlights and notes feature. [00:18:35.500] Highlights and Notes you can imagine you're students are [00:18:37.799] reading or and I'm sorry I am K-12 so, I always refer to students, it's a habit [00:18:40.000] am I'm [00:18:43.599] trying to work on, maybe your patrons [00:18:45.599] to but I'm going to since I hope I [00:18:47.599] have some TexQuest people on here and gear this towards students. You can click and drag on the question itself, highlight and then add [00:18:54.900] some notes [00:18:59.799] and then as you read below [00:19:01.799] if you find the answer [00:19:04.000] to question 1 let's say [00:19:06.000] it's this [00:19:07.599] you can highlight again click and drag and then [00:19:09.900] the Box pops up for highlight I'm [00:19:12.200] going to choose yellow [00:19:17.200] and then it did say explain [00:19:19.500] your answer so of course then [00:19:21.700] the students can add a little bit more context [00:19:23.900] in their, in their notes Okay [00:19:26.099] and then so on and so forth so if we [00:19:28.099] did number two and I just want to show you [00:19:30.099] just to show the different colors and [00:19:32.299] also I love this feature for [00:19:34.900] this product because it [00:19:36.900] is Pro/Con so, your students could [00:19:39.200] pick yellow for Pro and [00:19:41.900] maybe blue for Con, if they want or [00:19:43.900] however they choose to do that throughout [00:19:46.799] these articles because what will happen [00:19:49.200] is they [00:19:51.299] have a couple different options I [00:19:53.700] hope I chose blue [00:20:03.099] so now I've highlighted two different [00:20:05.099] areas now in my toolbox [00:20:07.400] it says Highlights and Notes there's four [00:20:09.500] I have the question and the answer [00:20:11.599] in both. Now [00:20:14.000] if I send this to my Google Drive what'll [00:20:16.099] happen is not only will the entire article [00:20:18.400] go into my Google Drive [00:20:20.500] but also the text [00:20:22.500] I've highlighted and the notes I've [00:20:24.599] taken and I'll show you that before [00:20:26.799] I do if I click on highlights and notes you [00:20:29.000] can see here I can I have [00:20:31.099] what I highlighted in yellow what I've highlighted in [00:20:33.299] blue I can access view [00:20:35.599] all highlights and notes and there's [00:20:37.700] also one other area to do that but if I wanted [00:20:39.900] to jump to this answer I can [00:20:41.900] click on Highlights and Notes in the toolbox and [00:20:44.000] this will take me to that portion of the article [00:20:47.200] now in my Google Drive [00:20:49.900] what it looks like is [00:20:52.599] the entire article is downloaded [00:20:54.599] now in to my Google Drive a nice folder is created [00:20:57.200] titled Opposing Viewpoints in Context [00:20:59.400] whenever I'm in this database all content [00:21:01.900] from Opposing Viewpoints will go right into this folder [00:21:05.200] and then from here I have [00:21:07.200] and you can see I'm in this quite a [00:21:09.200] bit so I believe it was this one [00:21:18.000] but you get the idea so we have [00:21:20.200] the text that is highlighted and [00:21:22.799] then at the very bottom of this article [00:21:26.700] there's my text and the notes I've [00:21:28.799] taken so it'll always be at the [00:21:30.799] very bottom of the article and it's now a workable document [00:21:37.700] I'm back into Opposing Viewpoints [00:21:39.799] In Context, I want to show you [00:21:41.900] too Highlights and Notes, a few [00:21:44.200] different ways that this can be used by [00:21:50.200] So, yes we put it in the article, we sent the entire article to our Google Drive, but [00:21:52.200] what else can be done is I can view [00:21:54.200] those highlights and notes. I [00:21:56.599] can choose [00:21:59.599] to go into another section of the database this [00:22:02.099] way or I'm going to show you under [00:22:04.099] the more button it's also here now [00:22:06.299] it is session based so, when I click [00:22:08.400] on highlights and notes it's going to take me to [00:22:10.700] what I've just done, but I've also did a little pre-work and [00:22:14.400] I was in a variety of articles [00:22:16.500] so this sectional continue to build out [00:22:18.700] so I was in a few different articles where [00:22:21.200] I was working and adding more content to [00:22:23.400] my highlighted article section and [00:22:25.900] these can be used as, I like to refer to them as, digital [00:22:28.200] notecards. If you're doing [00:22:30.500] research or if you're working with colleagues [00:22:32.900] or you want to share information on with [00:22:35.000] with your library maybe with your patrons [00:22:38.099] we all look for text [00:22:40.500] certain parts of text that really speak to us no matter what [00:22:42.799] we're reading right so this is a great [00:22:45.000] way to do that, just highlight that information and save it for yourself and you can send it all at one time into your Google Drive [00:22:53.099] or your OneDrive. You can print it, email it, [00:22:55.500] download it or you can put it right onto your computer [00:22:57.599] also the citation [00:22:59.700] since I was in multiple articles and this [00:23:01.700] is building out again so it's session based [00:23:03.900] if I were to not [00:23:06.599] go to the screen and do something [00:23:08.799] with my highlighted article send it to my Google [00:23:10.799] Drive or any of these other tools that I [00:23:12.900] have here and log off her [00:23:14.900] close out of this session, than this information [00:23:17.099] would be lost. So, [00:23:19.099] just keep that in mind, especially if you are working with students [00:23:20.500] But the nice thing is, since I was in multiple articles, if I click onto citations now, hear are all the articles I was in [00:23:29.200] here's my bibliography. Now the students can export this into their Google Drive and start their bibliography page or works cited page. If they put it into their Google Drive or OneDrive, it won't alphabetize [00:23:52.099] it for them so they do have to do just a little [00:23:54.500] bit of work and alphabetize it, but if they are using Easy Bib or NoodleTools, it will alphabetize it for them. I was from the days [00:24:03.400] it was a Holt Handbook and figure [00:24:05.400] out where that comma went and what needed to be [00:24:07.599] italicized and now it's all done for [00:24:09.599] them but then you can also change the format [00:24:11.700] just like we could at the article [00:24:13.700] level so a [00:24:15.799] great way to use this feature [00:24:18.500] within our product and then [00:24:20.599] if I go into my Google Drive what it looks [00:24:22.799] like if it turns into like I'd mention [00:24:25.000] it workable document [00:24:28.299] sorry I minimized my screen there. There we go and it will show up under Opposing Viewpoints In Context again. It is going to be just listed as Highlighted Articles, so [00:24:40.400] they're going to have to determine [00:24:42.799] I mean they do have to do a little bit [00:24:44.799] of organization once they're in their Google Drive [00:24:46.900] but for anyone using Google [00:24:49.000] Drive or Microsoft this is not new information [00:24:51.000] so here it is, but [00:24:53.099] the nice thing is with our new enhancements [00:24:55.400] is the articles are [00:24:57.400] now hyperlinks so they can go directly to [00:24:59.599] that article from there Highlights and [00:25:02.200] Notes that they've taken [00:25:05.000] and the bibliography is at the bottom [00:25:08.599] and it becomes this workable document or those [00:25:10.700] digital note cards they can share it with their [00:25:12.799] teachers or instructors and then [00:25:14.900] they can comment back because it [00:25:16.900] is workable document and kind of determine where there students are at and if they are on the right page [00:25:24.700] they can also, I'm back in the product [00:25:26.799] before they send it to their Google Drive [00:25:28.799] they could edit their notes too so [00:25:31.599] if you are working with [00:25:33.700] are talking about plagiarism they've highlighted [00:25:36.400] this text, they can put it into their own words [00:25:38.500] in real time and then they [00:25:40.500] can send it all to their Google drive at that time. So, they can do a little bit of revision or editing before they send it into their Google Drive. [00:25:47.700] Okay, any questions on anything I've [00:25:49.700] gone over so far? I just want to show you [00:25:51.900] one other item and then Stacey [00:25:54.000] how are we doing? We're doing okay on time? [00:25:56.599] Yep, and I don't have anything in the Q and A for you [00:25:58.700] Perfect. Okay. [00:26:01.000] So, let me show you [00:26:03.099] one of our other really popular features [00:26:05.500] which is Translate [00:26:07.799] now what happens if I go to translate [00:26:10.299] article which is here in the toolbox towards [00:26:13.000] the bottom I can translate [00:26:15.400] this into now we're up to [00:26:17.599] 40 different languages [00:26:19.900] and what it'll do is not only will [00:26:22.099] it translate the text [00:26:24.099] it also translates [00:26:26.099] you see the little listen button here, the read [00:26:29.200] speaker. So, the text will be read [00:26:31.500] in I'm in Spanish so it'll [00:26:33.500] be read in Spanish to whomever is listening to it. It can also be downloaded. So, it's a great tool to have, not only that, but you can translate the [00:26:44.400] entire platform to Spanish [00:26:46.599] so here all the tools have been [00:26:48.599] translated and also my article [00:26:51.900] great way to reach our end users and [00:26:54.500] their students and patrons so [00:26:57.799] that again I'm going to go back to English because my High School Spanish is lacking. [00:27:04.500] So, I have to translate the platform back first. There we go, now [00:27:07.900] I can read [00:27:11.900] Alright, I am back to English, there we go. [00:27:17.000] Okay and then the only other [00:27:19.200] item I wanted to show you and I hope this [00:27:21.299] article I picked has it at the bottom, yes So, remember we were on a Topic Page and there were Related Resources or [00:27:29.200] articles at the bottom you're going to find [00:27:31.299] any articles that are related [00:27:33.400] are going to be here at the bottom to the [00:27:35.700] same article so you're going to find, [00:27:37.700] so, this is a great tool too and then something that's recently [00:27:40.000] been added [00:27:42.200] can you hang there for a minute [00:27:44.299] I wanted to mention something about the source citation there [00:27:46.900] so we were talking earlier about [00:27:49.000] Gale is a publisher we put out [00:27:51.099] our own stuff and and when you're in our databases [00:27:53.500] you'll find that quite a bit under the reference content [00:27:56.000] but one of the things I wanted to point out I [00:27:58.000] think that makes Opposing Viewpoints In Context unique [00:28:00.400] is that we don't just have our [00:28:02.599] editors right one essay and support [00:28:04.900] of an issue and then another one against [00:28:07.299] these are viewpoints remember I [00:28:09.299] mention the content is curated we went [00:28:11.299] out and found essays on the [00:28:13.299] topics or news articles or wherever it [00:28:15.400] may be from someone who knows what [00:28:17.400] they're talking about that's a little bit of what you [00:28:19.400] get me article commentary to you always know [00:28:21.400] where your opinions are coming from [00:28:23.500] and you'll notice the source citation for [00:28:25.500] those Viewpoint essays are a little [00:28:27.599] different from other products because we actually site that original [00:28:30.700] publication and then our [00:28:32.799] version of it because we've annotated it we've added [00:28:34.900] those questions and commentary and so on [00:28:36.900] So, there actually a couple levels to [00:28:38.900] the citations here when you're in the Viewpoint Essays [00:28:41.000] so folks always [00:28:43.200] know where they're getting their information from and [00:28:45.200] that's important again, we're talking about fake news [00:28:47.200] and how to fight this is one of [00:28:49.200] the things we encourage our users, our [00:28:51.200] students to look for where are you getting [00:28:53.200] your information and with all the [00:28:55.200] citation tools it makes it really easy but [00:28:57.700] it's also very discoverable we're very [00:28:59.799] transparent with our content of Gale [00:29:02.000] and these Related Resources are [00:29:04.000] another way you know we're not coming into a [00:29:06.000] database and getting just one [00:29:08.099] side of an issue but we're also not [00:29:10.099] getting just one issue you [00:29:12.200] know if you look at something like Capital Punishment [00:29:14.500] certainly that can break down into a very [00:29:16.599] Pro/Con kind of opinion, but [00:29:19.000] you also get these areas of grey with [00:29:21.000] in it other discussions around it you know what [00:29:23.099] might be the most humane way to do it things [00:29:25.299] like that so you know [00:29:27.299] we talk about this being curated content in [00:29:29.400] the single database that you still get a really wide [00:29:31.599] look at an issue so [00:29:33.799] I think the source citation helps illustrate [00:29:35.900] that as well so I just I couldn't help but wanted to mention that. [00:29:42.200] And along those lines, [00:29:44.799] you actually made [00:29:46.799] me think of something when I, do [00:29:49.000] we have time for me to do one more quick search? Sure. [00:29:53.700] zoos and Aquariums I was [00:29:56.500] in this Topic Page recently and [00:29:58.799] I looked at Viewpoints and this is a great way [00:30:00.799] to show that Pro/Con here's [00:30:03.000] an article, a Viewpoint Essay that [00:30:05.299] has commentary [00:30:07.299] that stating that it's the Zoo [00:30:09.500] maybe some animals last hope [00:30:11.500] it's that you know, maybe it's a conservation, too. Then here's another one from another [00:30:18.299] editor and they're talking about [00:30:20.500] how zoos are [00:30:22.500] no longer you know that the legacy of Zoos needs [00:30:24.500] to change we're back in the colonial times [00:30:26.500] so here's your Pro and Con for Zoos. You are seeing [00:30:30.099] both sides right here right next to each [00:30:32.200] other which I thought was quite interesting. So, you're [00:30:34.200] going to find that throughout this product [00:30:36.500] and again we don't spell it out for our patrons or our users. [00:30:41.799] We let them determine is this a pro or is this a con [00:30:43.799] on and that's another thing I just love about [00:30:45.900] about this product so that [00:30:47.900] critical thinking it inspires. Yes, those critical thinking skills, we need it at all levels. Not just at the K-12, right. [00:30:53.599] Alright, that is everything I was going to cover. Are you ready to take it back Stacey? You bet. [00:31:06.599] So, folks [00:31:08.900] I'm going to be talking with you about one of the other [00:31:10.900] resources in this one also comes to [00:31:13.099] both texts share and text [00:31:15.500] Quest libraries it's [00:31:17.700] science and contacts in this is one [00:31:19.700] of my favorite you know certainly [00:31:22.000] it applies and you know for our [00:31:24.000] K-12 students there are middle and high [00:31:26.000] school students but outside [00:31:28.500] of that as well certainly up into the first [00:31:30.500] few years of college and I'm [00:31:32.799] in the public libraries while I can get really valuable [00:31:35.099] to walk like all of our in contacts [00:31:37.400] database as you got out of lots of different types [00:31:39.400] of content in here like we were seeing an opposing [00:31:41.700] viewpoints in context there's reference [00:31:44.200] there's magazines there's academic journals [00:31:46.299] there's multimedia all these different pieces [00:31:48.400] there science experiments some of my favorite [00:31:50.599] Tools in that database all [00:31:53.900] in one place kind of brought together [00:31:55.900] again authoritative information [00:31:58.000] so when folks are thinking about [00:32:00.000] one of the things I did [00:32:02.700] like Tammi was to pull the [00:32:05.200] ice [00:32:07.200] cream Cup Championship top [00:32:15.099] searches in science in context global [00:32:17.700] warming these vitamins [00:32:19.799] artificial intelligence so people [00:32:22.400] are after authoritative science [00:32:24.799] information and you [00:32:26.799] can contact you do get that critical [00:32:29.099] look at the at the issue and it can help [00:32:31.200] you make up your mind about something but [00:32:33.299] sometimes you also just want information if [00:32:35.400] you want to understand something better going [00:32:38.099] to be a good stop for Science and contact [00:32:40.299] still like we got [00:32:42.500] a similar look and feel hearing to the [00:32:44.500] homepage point you two different Topics in the [00:32:46.500] like one of the things you want [00:32:48.500] to share with you again in the sense of getting [00:32:50.799] your users using these resources instead [00:32:52.900] of you know it going out there on the [00:32:54.900] web and finding fake news content is [00:32:57.599] a way to drive them in so let's say [00:32:59.700] we know there's an interest in global warming [00:33:02.700] running let me just mention [00:33:05.000] that's something you can do that's one [00:33:07.099] of the things are new user dashboard at [00:33:09.099] Gail can do it can tell you what are the top [00:33:11.099] search is in your library and in your specific [00:33:13.400] databases so feel free to reach out [00:33:15.500] to us after and we can get [00:33:17.900] you working on that were actually going to share some support [00:33:19.900] information when I wrap up to so you'll know where to [00:33:21.900] go for that global [00:33:24.099] warming is [00:33:26.700] pointing astroportal Pages hydrologic [00:33:39.700] cycle ice ages and [00:33:42.200] so on so we can kind of find these related [00:33:44.299] topics to global warming [00:33:46.299] let's [00:33:51.099] say we want to share this information with [00:33:53.400] our users we want to drive him right [00:33:55.400] to this portal [00:33:57.099] Tammy showed you the Gail Gail [00:34:00.000] the Google classrooms feature which is [00:34:02.000] really handy but [00:34:04.200] generally they want [00:34:09.199] to drive users into these databases you [00:34:12.199] can do that with our [00:34:14.300] bookmark tool whenever [00:34:16.400] you see that in the upper right hand corner [00:34:18.400] the banner it's going [00:34:20.500] to be available for you to get [00:34:22.599] a persistent URL or [00:34:24.599] Pearl so this URL [00:34:26.800] that it's giving me is always going to land [00:34:29.000] right here in science and contacts [00:34:31.199] on the global warming and climate change it's [00:34:34.300] a persistent URL or Pearl [00:34:36.500] not going to change it's always going [00:34:38.500] to work you don't want to use [00:34:41.400] the one up here in the address bar the [00:34:43.500] browser that's not persistent [00:34:45.599] it's not always going to bring you back to the same [00:34:47.599] place all those neat tools that Tammy [00:34:50.099] was showing you with highlights and notes in the like [00:34:52.199] those are good for yourself so [00:34:54.300] your session information is actually I [00:34:56.400] think that you are all the stuff in your browser and [00:34:58.400] that gets cleared out when you leave the database [00:35:00.500] so you want to use [00:35:02.599] the bookmark URL instead [00:35:05.099] because this isn't going to change and [00:35:07.500] it's going to drop you use theirs right where you want [00:35:09.599] them so that URL [00:35:11.699] again is persistent but it's also just [00:35:13.800] to URL you can put it wherever you would [00:35:15.800] normally put a URL so if you want to copy [00:35:17.900] and paste it to the library's website you [00:35:20.400] want a linkage on a Facebook poster [00:35:22.699] a Twitter poster online [00:35:24.900] syllabus and email wherever [00:35:27.000] you normally put a URL you just copy [00:35:29.300] it and you're good to go and let's [00:35:31.500] meet about it go ahead and give an example you [00:35:33.800] have created the niblo library side of his name [00:35:36.000] to library after myself [00:35:41.400] we got to get the facts page and I Library [00:35:43.400] something like that I [00:35:45.599] can create a link to takes [00:35:47.699] my user's right into science and contacts [00:35:49.800] or opposing viewpoints in context you're really [00:35:51.800] whatever and [00:35:54.599] it's going to land them right here and [00:35:56.699] the other great thing about it is that [00:35:58.699] bookmarks URL jumped over [00:36:00.900] authentication so your [00:36:03.199] users actually wouldn't have to put in a password [00:36:05.599] or library card number or anything they [00:36:08.500] get to this page [00:36:10.800] with just that you are out now [00:36:12.900] it doesn't really let him go too much farther than [00:36:15.099] that but [00:36:18.000] if you're linking in to say a single article [00:36:20.000] or one of these Pages you can get to all [00:36:22.000] of this content if you want out [00:36:24.000] then try to search on something else out then it's [00:36:26.000] going to stop you make sure your library [00:36:28.099] user but the URL [00:36:30.199] has kind of the Earth at bookmark URL has this [00:36:32.199] built-in wait for [00:36:34.199] you to get users right to the database with [00:36:36.199] one click [00:36:37.300] really really handy feature and [00:36:39.900] you'll see it all over the place I've got it here [00:36:41.900] on my portal page but [00:36:44.400] say I want to link to this overview [00:36:46.500] essay on global warming [00:36:48.599] from the uxcell infected weather [00:36:50.599] in natural disasters that [00:36:52.699] can Dive Right In with [00:36:54.699] that bookmark you are also wherever you see [00:36:56.699] that I can you can point the [00:36:58.699] users to it so we [00:37:00.699] can come from an article [00:37:02.699] standpoint from the topic pages [00:37:04.699] from other areas of the database it's pretty [00:37:06.800] much always available so [00:37:09.000] really handy feature you can also [00:37:11.199] I mentioned briefly before you could take that [00:37:13.199] you are relative Facebook or Twitter well [00:37:15.699] if you're working with a single article [00:37:18.000] we've actually got a little too old for you to do that [00:37:20.099] yourself good things share button [00:37:22.099] you find out a lot of websites it [00:37:24.400] just get you started with a post to Facebook Twitter [00:37:26.699] Pinterest almost 200 different [00:37:28.699] sites that you can post to [00:37:31.199] your social media options basically [00:37:33.199] they're so does the same thing it makes [00:37:35.300] you should the bookmark URL handy [00:37:42.400] way to drive users right [00:37:44.900] where you want them and [00:37:47.099] when you're working with a very group [00:37:49.400] especially in the public library one [00:37:52.699] of the things and actually really [00:37:55.099] at all levels I would think you you're going to want to show [00:37:57.099] me pop down into similar [00:37:59.300] magazine hunt content when [00:38:02.099] you're trying to decide specifically what you [00:38:04.099] want we can [00:38:06.099] chill one of the good things it's it's good [00:38:08.199] to be a warehouse are [00:38:10.300] are content levels in the databases [00:38:12.599] these icons and you can actually filter [00:38:14.599] to them over on the right as well these [00:38:17.099] are an indicator of the reading level [00:38:19.199] and the research [00:38:22.599] level of the article who is the audience [00:38:24.599] when you see or get a lot of [00:38:26.599] intermediate here when you see these are [00:38:33.900] the basics to be [00:38:36.400] more middle school and then Advanced [00:38:39.099] will be the more the red [00:38:41.199] triangle there will be more academic [00:38:43.300] or Scholars of course we see that for a lot of her [00:38:45.300] academic Journal Star for most all of [00:38:47.300] them as well depending [00:38:50.000] on who you want to point the content to [00:38:52.099] you can determine [00:38:54.800] the Audience [00:38:57.599] by using match content [00:38:59.800] level that we as [00:39:10.000] we were talking about [00:39:12.599] earlier you know Tammy [00:39:14.800] and I are jealous of the weather [00:39:17.099] in Texas for I'm sorry. I'm [00:39:19.199] having a little trouble with my keyboard [00:39:21.500] there severe [00:39:24.800] weather solar energy probably [00:39:26.800] shouldn't you take that more advantage of there in Texas [00:39:29.000] then I can in Buffalo and [00:39:31.000] I'm too it did it again [00:39:35.199] there we go okay sorry I want it I'm [00:39:37.199] having trouble with my keyboard it's not [00:39:39.199] in my mouth okay here we go to [00:39:47.300] text and this is a more traditional [00:39:49.500] result screen we don't really have a portal dedicated [00:39:51.800] to Texas and solar energy so I [00:39:53.800] think there is one for solar energy and we [00:39:57.300] got [00:40:00.199] you some good results here but one of the neat [00:40:02.500] things we've added any mention there was a relief [00:40:05.000] to the income tax products not long ago one [00:40:07.800] of the things we added to the database [00:40:09.900] was topic sign and [00:40:12.000] you may have seen this another Gail resource you [00:40:14.000] just been so well-received that we've added it [00:40:16.099] to him contacts to this is [00:40:18.199] our visual search to him and [00:40:20.500] what it shows you where the key terms [00:40:22.500] that are in your results basically [00:40:24.800] go to bed and [00:40:27.000] then gives a view of the [00:40:29.000] key terms that are used in them so [00:40:31.300] when we're talking about solar energy and [00:40:33.400] Texas what are we talkin about [00:40:35.099] solar power wind plays [00:40:37.199] into it renewable energy these are all [00:40:39.300] key term solar cell [00:40:41.500] solar panels house even [00:40:43.500] though we have an example [00:40:47.500] because it mentions J arguing and [00:40:49.900] I wouldn't in my grandpa and I were huge Dallas [00:40:52.099] fan but it's actually because he [00:40:55.300] was promoting solar energy a little [00:40:58.699] side note what really what [00:41:00.800] we're seeing here are the way all of these [00:41:02.900] topics kind of connect and [00:41:05.300] we can click [00:41:07.599] on any of these key terms and I'm going to point us [00:41:09.699] to the articles that those [00:41:11.800] results of [00:41:15.000] the things I like about it I think it really grabs [00:41:17.000] users or something to click on and [00:41:19.400] I specially like it when folks are looking for [00:41:21.400] information on articles [00:41:23.599] that's what you're getting here you're not [00:41:25.599] scrolling and scrolling through a [00:41:27.599] search result you're working with that search [00:41:29.699] results and over on [00:41:31.699] the right seeing the results that [00:41:33.800] match up [00:41:35.099] it's a really interesting way to come [00:41:37.099] at your topic and you [00:41:39.199] can start with it actually it'll come up when [00:41:41.400] you done a search like I did it again I'm just repeat [00:41:43.699] that and then highlight again where I found it over [00:41:46.599] on the right in the panels [00:41:49.300] that topic binder you can also [00:41:51.400] look for it though and start your search that [00:41:53.699] way if you go to Advanced Search we've also [00:41:55.699] put it there and [00:41:57.900] would have answered when she get there you got one [00:41:59.900] more click it sounds [00:42:02.599] hear the topic [00:42:04.699] finder and you can start [00:42:06.699] your search with it so let's say I want to research [00:42:08.699] invasive species [00:42:11.599] again [00:42:19.300] and you can start your search that way and [00:42:22.099] zero in so we find connections [00:42:24.400] with different topics we playing War key [00:42:26.500] terms I can use if I want to search on [00:42:28.599] those two really interactive [00:42:30.800] way of working with the content in the database in [00:42:32.900] its engaging it something another [00:42:36.599] way to dry users in the [00:42:43.900] listen and translate really expands the reach [00:42:46.099] of the database to reach more users that [00:42:48.099] way so lots of reasons [00:42:50.199] to come in and use these authoritative [00:42:52.300] resources at [00:42:55.300] science in context [00:42:58.900] let you get on with the rest of your [00:43:00.900] day here so we've already [00:43:02.900] drove in couple last [00:43:05.099] things I wanted to share with you so let's [00:43:07.500] be inspired by what other libraries [00:43:09.800] are doing with [00:43:11.900] fake news issues and [00:43:14.400] I've got a few links are all cooties in [00:43:16.400] my follow-up email but you [00:43:18.800] know libraries are doing their own professional development [00:43:21.000] Massachusetts library system offered a webinar [00:43:23.400] that really inspired are doing these [00:43:25.400] webinars that you can [00:43:27.400] tune into that got the recording there [00:43:29.800] are lots of guys out there for spotting [00:43:32.099] fake news I've got a few links here [00:43:34.099] and then some libraries you even doing their own program [00:43:36.500] in around at this is a write-up from one to [00:43:39.000] the library didn't New Hampshire so we're [00:43:41.400] going to share these links you can investigate those going [00:43:47.000] to versus viewpoints so you'll [00:43:49.000] see this in most of our in context databases [00:43:51.699] the [00:43:53.800] if you points is where all of [00:43:55.900] the Viewpoint essays go the feature [00:43:58.099] viewpoints are some ones that are editors [00:44:00.199] have hand selected to highlight [00:44:02.699] and there's always a balance but [00:44:05.500] one of the things one of the reasons I usually Point [00:44:07.500] featured people just want [00:44:09.500] feature of your points for is if they are [00:44:11.500] kind of looking for a pro-con argument [00:44:13.699] because it's usually only a few articles anywhere [00:44:16.000] from there before 2:10 it's [00:44:18.199] a lot easier to spot those that are in direct [00:44:20.199] opposition to one another and their [00:44:22.300] that's our little nod to maybe a pro-con list [00:44:24.400] they're [00:44:26.400] just Hands Like Houses [00:44:29.900] teachers articles and again it's just have [00:44:31.900] a few to get you started [00:44:34.699] okay keep those questions [00:44:36.800] coming in going to let Tammy talk about [00:44:38.800] our support and how you can connect with us [00:44:40.900] can we go ahead thank you so [00:44:43.500] you have access to a customer [00:44:45.599] support site, It's [00:44:49.800] support.gale.com If [00:44:52.800] you don't know your location I need is a little [00:44:54.800] area here to put in your location ID just
