[00:00:04.929] Thank you again everyone for joining [00:00:07.110] today. We've got a 15 minutes to master [00:00:09.579] a session specifically talking [00:00:11.800] about how you can support financial literacy [00:00:13.978] lessons with Gale In Context: Elementary. [00:00:16.568] My name is Amber Winters and I'm your training consultant [00:00:18.888] for the day. [00:00:19.940] We've got a brief agenda here today. We're [00:00:21.949] mainly going to be [00:00:22.978] talking about topic trees and topic [00:00:25.280] pages, specifically, the ones [00:00:27.440] that are going to be related to financial literacy. [00:00:29.548] So we'll go over what those are and what they [00:00:31.568] look like briefly. [00:00:33.029] But then we're going to kind of walk through the platform [00:00:35.439] so you can see how your students and you as educators [00:00:38.289] are going to find this content and really [00:00:40.298] easily utilize it. [00:00:41.709] And then at the very end of the session, I'll hit [00:00:43.819] any questions that I'm not able to answer as [00:00:45.899] we move along today. And I do have some [00:00:47.918] wrap up contact information for you as well. [00:00:50.359] So first I want to talk about the topic [00:00:52.389] tree and how you're actually going to narrow down [00:00:54.679] to financial literacy topics. So the [00:00:56.889] topic tree starts on the home page. Anyone who's [00:00:58.978] been on Galen Context Elementary, [00:01:01.189] you've seen it. We've got these nice little kind of circle [00:01:03.649] icons here that give different topics. [00:01:05.760] So we have a full pathway that's going [00:01:08.010] to guide your learners and your teachers [00:01:10.209] to the financial literacy topics. [00:01:12.769] And they're going to start by clicking the social studies [00:01:15.278] button right on the home page. It's [00:01:17.388] going to launch them into a few [00:01:19.638] different options. They're going to click into money and [00:01:21.689] economics. Once they click into [00:01:23.739] that section, they're going to be pulled to a page that looks [00:01:25.930] like this. [00:01:27.370] I've kind of broken it up a little bit so it fits [00:01:29.409] on the screen but they're going to see [00:01:31.528] some pretty specific [00:01:33.558] topic pages listed here about things like money [00:01:35.888] and saving money. [00:01:37.198] And we also pull forward some other topics [00:01:39.299] kind of in this text format here as well. So [00:01:41.329] we've included icons for some of the, the [00:01:43.480] main most studied topics. [00:01:46.040] Then moving forward, we've included um [00:01:48.370] some that are a little bit less studied. So again, [00:01:50.939] if you're looking just as a whole [00:01:52.989] for financial literacy information, [00:01:55.049] the best way to do that is to follow our topic [00:01:57.109] tree. So starting in social studies, [00:01:59.209] moving on to money and economics and [00:02:01.448] then moving forward into selecting one of these [00:02:03.569] topics. [00:02:04.778] And once you or your educators or your [00:02:06.888] students click into one of these topics here, [00:02:09.319] they're going to be pulled into a topic page [00:02:11.360] that we've pre created for them. So this [00:02:13.368] is a really nice organized landing [00:02:15.550] point for your students, if they're planning [00:02:17.629] on kind of running through research on their own or [00:02:20.189] for you as an educator. If you're trying to pull [00:02:22.788] information, you see here, this topic page is [00:02:24.830] about saving money. So if you're trying to pull [00:02:26.960] maybe an image or a video related [00:02:29.189] to saving money, [00:02:30.479] you can then write on this topic page and you won't need to [00:02:32.610] run searches or kind of, you know, weed [00:02:34.808] through search results. We've got it all nice and organized [00:02:36.979] here at the very top [00:02:39.020] of all of our topic pages. We have just [00:02:41.149] a brief overview that's kind of laying the foundation [00:02:43.710] for whatever topic they're going to be studying. [00:02:46.699] Underneath that. We do include some really nice quick [00:02:48.990] facts and I do want to just point these out. [00:02:51.288] These are great if you're just trying to get students [00:02:53.460] to start thinking a little bit. if we [00:02:55.550] talk about saving money, this one here people [00:02:57.800] often save money in savings accounts. [00:03:00.099] This is a great conversation starter. Why [00:03:02.129] do people save money? What do you know about [00:03:04.360] savings accounts? Why do you think you [00:03:06.429] should put money in a bank as opposed to putting [00:03:08.569] it under your mattress? This is a great [00:03:10.860] way to start getting students engaged, [00:03:13.099] engaged and critically thinking without [00:03:15.210] even pulling any content. Yet. We're still just on [00:03:17.250] this topic page. [00:03:19.689] Then down below that, we have our organized content [00:03:21.939] bucket. So this is where you're going to find all [00:03:24.300] of the resources that are related to that topic. [00:03:26.838] We've organized them based on content type. [00:03:29.490] So as you start to scroll down, you'll see book articles [00:03:31.860] which are really reference articles. We've just [00:03:33.919] called them book articles to make them a little bit [00:03:36.038] more inviting to students. But you'll [00:03:38.058] find book articles and magazines. [00:03:40.199] If you have ebooks related to whatever topic [00:03:42.389] you're looking at, those are going to appear [00:03:44.520] within gal and context elementary now as well. [00:03:46.778] You'll also find great multimedia content like [00:03:48.969] images and videos. So all of that's [00:03:50.979] going to be loaded up here on this nice clean [00:03:53.159] topic page for you and for your users. [00:03:56.520] And we'll take a look. There's a lot of different ways you can actually share [00:03:58.800] these topic pages. So if you want to [00:04:00.830] share out before a lesson or at the end [00:04:02.949] of a lesson, so they can review, [00:04:04.758] you'll be able to do that to get students directly [00:04:07.129] to this kind of a landing page. [00:04:10.669] Now, I just want to spend the rest of the time looking [00:04:12.770] at the resource. We've got 10 minutes and I want to use [00:04:14.919] it all up. But before I do, are [00:04:17.028] there any questions before I kind of switch [00:04:19.230] over here? [00:04:20.759] Ok. Well, I don't see any. So [00:04:22.869] let's just go ahead and dive in and kind of see [00:04:25.028] what this is going to look like for us. So this [00:04:27.290] is the home page of gel and context elementary. [00:04:29.798] I'm not going to be going over all of it today since [00:04:31.869] we're specifically focused on financial [00:04:33.939] literacy. [00:04:34.939] But I do want to point out at the top here. [00:04:37.629] You do have different options. If you want to do like [00:04:39.759] a quick browse for a specific topic. Maybe [00:04:42.019] you really want to look at your books. [00:04:44.048] I can click into those. [00:04:46.559] You'll be able to see all of the gil ebooks [00:04:48.588] you currently have access to and you can search through books [00:04:50.949] if you know, maybe you want to get a picture [00:04:53.069] out to your students related to something [00:04:55.379] financial. you can click into [00:04:57.389] pictures here and again, you can search [00:04:59.528] through that for whatever you're looking for. But [00:05:01.569] today we're gonna stick with topics [00:05:03.699] and we're going to browse down that way. [00:05:07.189] So again, right on the home page. I'm going to scroll down [00:05:09.238] here and this is the very top of our topic [00:05:11.459] tree here. So you'll see, we have it broken up based [00:05:13.500] on subject. Today. We're going to be [00:05:15.559] looking at social studies. That's where we house all [00:05:17.730] of our financial literacy information [00:05:22.449] and moving on from social studies. We get another [00:05:24.540] step down here to kind of narrow down a bit [00:05:26.588] more. We're going to click into money and [00:05:28.720] economics [00:05:32.178] and now we've got the final step here [00:05:34.209] of our topic tree. And I want to point out you'll see [00:05:36.329] on this top left, we give this nice [00:05:38.528] breadcrumb trail of where we've been. So we [00:05:40.559] have it visually here. You'll see we started with social studies, [00:05:43.389] then we move down to money and economics to get this. [00:05:46.048] And we also have links here as well. So [00:05:48.149] I can jump back to the home page if I want or [00:05:50.559] I can go back to social studies from here if I want [00:05:52.588] as well. So it's a really clean way to find [00:05:54.649] information that you're looking for. [00:05:57.420] And I do want to point out at the top of our [00:05:59.428] page here on our toolbar. You'll see, I have [00:06:01.540] this get link button and this follows me along [00:06:03.838] a lot. If you kind of watch as I click through, [00:06:05.869] you're going to see this get link button frequently [00:06:08.470] and this is going to provide a persistent URL [00:06:10.548] to whatever page you're on. [00:06:12.238] So this particular page that has all [00:06:14.389] of our financial literacy topics included [00:06:16.470] on, it is a really powerful page [00:06:18.488] that you may want to send over to your educators if they're [00:06:20.608] starting a unit and you're not quite sure [00:06:22.790] exactly what they're going to need content wise, [00:06:25.470] send them this link and they're going to see all [00:06:27.619] of these topic pages ready to go and then they can kind of pick [00:06:29.850] and choose exactly what they need. [00:06:36.189] Let's go and scroll down here before I click into [00:06:38.379] a topic page. I also want to point out this, I [00:06:40.559] wonder question section and [00:06:42.670] this changes as you start to navigate through the resource [00:06:45.238] but we'll see here. Why do people use credit cards? [00:06:47.730] So again, if you're planning a lesson, [00:06:49.759] you want to get students thinking, get them started. [00:06:51.850] Maybe you want just like a quick bell ringer activity. [00:06:54.149] You know, you want to pop a question up and just [00:06:56.298] have students talk about it for a little bit. This [00:06:58.480] is a great way to go to try to find that information. [00:07:00.699] So you'll see this one here. This I wonder [00:07:02.750] is why do people use credit cards? [00:07:04.920] I can click find out. Now you as an educator [00:07:07.149] code. If you're planning on using this as a class, [00:07:09.189] have it up on your white board [00:07:11.189] or your smart board [00:07:12.689] and then you can click find out together [00:07:15.790] and you're going to be pulled forward. This is pulling specifically [00:07:18.399] to the credit and credit cards topic page [00:07:20.850] and they'll be able to explore and answer that question [00:07:23.338] right here on this page [00:07:28.600] and it does change periodically. So you'll be able [00:07:30.730] to kind of click through that [00:07:32.119] and you'll see we have another one at the very bottom here as [00:07:34.269] well. What kinds of services do banks provide? [00:07:38.600] So, I really recommend again if you're building [00:07:40.689] your lessons and you're just looking for something quick, [00:07:43.149] take a look at this page, you're going to find these [00:07:45.329] Great Alwan questions that might [00:07:47.470] get you thinking a little bit and get your students thinking. [00:07:51.379] But let's go ahead and click into one of these topic pages [00:07:53.579] so we can see how they're organized. I'm just [00:07:55.670] gonna click into money. Like that's a pretty, [00:07:57.850] a pretty basic topic [00:08:00.449] that students are going to need to understand if we're talking about [00:08:02.569] financial literacy. So again, [00:08:04.769] on the topic page at the very top, we have [00:08:06.910] our overview. [00:08:08.009] Students can select, keep reading [00:08:10.149] if they want to explore this, giving them [00:08:12.220] just that quick background. You see, this is a pretty short [00:08:14.369] article because the goal of our overview [00:08:16.559] is really just to give them that [00:08:18.189] basic basic foundation to start [00:08:20.358] their learning. So they're gonna get the basic [00:08:22.970] right here, that overview, [00:08:25.928] they're going to scroll down again. They're going to get these [00:08:28.009] nice little quick facts. So they might find [00:08:30.119] something interesting here that they want to search [00:08:32.399] or browse through [00:08:33.979] underneath. We're going to have all of the [00:08:36.058] different content types. So I will [00:08:38.158] point out here we have a books option [00:08:40.489] and yours if you're following along will [00:08:42.577] probably look different than mine. [00:08:44.599] This book section includes any [00:08:46.788] elementary level gale [00:08:49.158] e books you have access to. So if your [00:08:51.288] learning community has a financial [00:08:53.750] literacy collection for elementary school [00:08:55.759] kids, it's going to appear now here [00:08:58.149] within Gael and context elementary. [00:09:00.190] So you may not see this at all. If you don't [00:09:02.308] currently have access to any financial literacy [00:09:04.700] ebooks related to money or you could see [00:09:06.820] a couple here [00:09:08.690] really depends on your collection, but that's actually [00:09:10.969] a new feature we have within Gale and context Elementary [00:09:13.479] is integrating those Gale Elementary [00:09:16.349] ebooks. So you may see full ebooks here depending [00:09:18.629] on your collection, [00:09:20.889] scrolling down. You're going to see things like news [00:09:23.080] and magazines. We've got a biography listed [00:09:25.219] here, pictures and videos. [00:09:28.139] I'm going to click into pictures here because I also want [00:09:30.340] to point out a lot of times you'll find some really [00:09:32.529] cool statistics and graphs [00:09:34.869] and things like that that are going to help [00:09:36.928] your students out. So [00:09:38.570] you'll see we've got different graphs here talking [00:09:40.690] about teens, clothes and money, [00:09:43.950] excuse me, [00:09:45.359] how parents spend their money. I think [00:09:47.369] this is a great one. If you're trying to show [00:09:49.599] kids, it's just how expensive they are [00:09:51.798] just how much money their parents are spending on them. [00:09:54.129] They can take a look at this. This [00:09:56.139] is also great, this little kind of graphic here. [00:09:58.460] If they want to see who's on us currency, [00:10:01.609] you can pull that up and share it out really [00:10:03.830] nice way to get access to this information. [00:10:06.889] And as I mentioned before, our get link is [00:10:08.960] still following me along. So if I do [00:10:11.080] want to share this out somewhere, [00:10:13.479] I can use get link and have a persistent [00:10:15.899] URL, I can also send this image [00:10:18.279] over to my drives. If I'm using [00:10:20.308] Google or Microsoft drive, I can send them there. [00:10:22.599] I can also email them [00:10:25.099] and I could download or print this. So if [00:10:27.288] I want to hold on to this image for whatever [00:10:29.369] I'm planning on using it for. I can certainly [00:10:31.489] do that. [00:10:32.379] I do recommend I prefer the get link [00:10:34.619] because that link is persistent. It's not going to break [00:10:37.219] and you can copy and paste it wherever you want. [00:10:39.259] You know, if you have your syllabus ready to go and you just [00:10:41.288] want to include it there, you can do that [00:10:43.308] if you have a project or an activity [00:10:45.639] coming up and you want students to use this particular [00:10:48.009] image [00:10:49.489] post that, that link, your students can go online [00:10:51.619] and get right in here to take a look at it. [00:10:54.899] Let me jump back here to our topic page. [00:10:58.668] Let me go back again because I wanna get out of my pictures. [00:11:02.690] So again, we've got a video here [00:11:06.000] and then at the very bottom, we have our related [00:11:08.070] topics. So once students kind [00:11:10.168] of get themselves situated with the idea [00:11:12.269] of money, what it is, how it works, [00:11:14.509] why we need it, how we use it. [00:11:16.379] they can start to move forward here and you'll [00:11:18.399] see some of these related topics. So again, they're [00:11:20.519] not even running a search. So if [00:11:22.609] your students are just exploring on their own, [00:11:24.969] they don't have to worry about building their own search terms. [00:11:26.989] Maybe now they're really interested in banking, you [00:11:29.019] know, they know about money. [00:11:30.719] What about banks? They can click directly into [00:11:32.869] banks to see that information. [00:11:38.710] Now I'm just going to quickly click into one [00:11:40.729] of these articles here [00:11:43.928] because I do want to show you just a few different features [00:11:46.279] that are going to be really helpful for your classes. [00:11:48.489] So the first is our leveling, a lot [00:11:50.629] of our documents actually have leveled [00:11:52.869] content that's leveled at two different reading [00:11:55.000] levels. They're based on [00:11:57.048] exile measures. So if you have students [00:11:59.129] at varying [00:12:00.840] reading levels with varying needs, [00:12:03.729] a lot of times you're going to find documents with two [00:12:05.759] different levels here. And when I clicked into [00:12:07.830] this, you can see this is showing me what levels [00:12:10.048] I have up top here, I've got a level two and a level [00:12:12.428] three. If you're ever interested in [00:12:14.558] what those levels indicate, you can hover over [00:12:16.678] them. However, over [00:12:18.710] this level three here, it's going to give you that lexile [00:12:21.019] range. If I click into level two [00:12:24.830] and hover over that, it's going to give me that range [00:12:27.048] there as well. [00:12:28.538] And you'll see I can easily tackle back and forth and this [00:12:30.629] is going to give the same information. [00:12:32.989] But of course, the level two is [00:12:35.019] generally going to be a little bit shorter [00:12:37.379] and have easier the vocabulary. That's how we get to [00:12:39.469] that lower lexile range. [00:12:41.989] But these are connected, you could toggle back and forth [00:12:44.210] share, whichever level needs [00:12:46.229] to be shared with certain students really [00:12:48.538] easily, really simply [00:12:50.369] if you want more detailed information about the article, [00:12:52.859] you can hit this little eye button and it's going [00:12:54.899] to give you a little bit more specific [00:12:56.928] information. So you'll see here, you do get the lexile measure [00:12:59.178] here as well as the length and all of that [00:13:01.349] good stuff. [00:13:04.119] And if you have struggling readers, we've got quite [00:13:06.359] a few different tools that are going to help them out [00:13:08.548] here. So the first is going to be our listen [00:13:10.869] feature. So if you do assign something like this to your [00:13:12.969] students who have trouble reading, [00:13:15.200] they can have this full article read to them in whatever [00:13:17.500] language they prefer. So if they need it in Spanish, [00:13:19.808] if they need it in Arabic, if they need [00:13:22.070] it in French, they'll be able to listen to that [00:13:24.090] here. They can also change [00:13:26.119] the font size here to make it bigger or [00:13:28.139] smaller whatever they prefer. [00:13:30.210] And I will click into display options because I also [00:13:32.369] want to show you we have a dyslexia font [00:13:34.469] here. [00:13:35.320] So for your students who prefer to read that way, [00:13:37.639] you'll see, I can change my text here [00:13:40.808] to exactly what I need. [00:13:43.048] And one final tool I want to point out today [00:13:45.279] with about one minute left. is our translate [00:13:47.639] option, which is a great feature for your students [00:13:49.899] who are still learning English. [00:13:52.440] You'll see they have the option to translate their article [00:13:54.619] to quite a few different languages here. [00:13:57.899] But they can also set the interface language [00:14:00.129] here. This is another great feature. This [00:14:02.210] is going to change all of the tools [00:14:04.239] found within the platform. You, so you'll see, I just clicked [00:14:06.859] set interface language. [00:14:09.519] Let's go to Spanish here. [00:14:12.038] So if you're going to be sharing this content with your [00:14:14.190] Spanish speaking students and they're going [00:14:16.298] to be navigating the platform on their own. And you want to [00:14:18.340] make sure they can do that. If they [00:14:20.399] change that interface language, you'll see all of my [00:14:22.548] tools now [00:14:23.769] are in whatever language [00:14:25.830] I clicked into for this, I clicked Spanish. [00:14:28.428] So as students start to click through here, they're [00:14:30.548] going to see all of these buttons in whatever [00:14:32.779] language I chose. [00:14:34.408] So they'll really be, it'll be a lot [00:14:36.619] easier for them to navigate as opposed to trying to [00:14:38.649] use the English buttons and maybe not quite understanding [00:14:41.219] where they're going. [00:14:43.830] But let me change this back here to English. [00:14:47.989] Here we go. And I will mention that [00:14:50.460] translation of the platform does follow them along [00:14:52.719] throughout the session. So if you're planning [00:14:54.899] on having your students in this resource, learning about [00:14:57.019] financial literacy, and you know, they're going [00:14:59.178] to need to have that translated information, [00:15:02.690] have them click up top here where it says English [00:15:05.070] and they can translate the platform before they even start [00:15:07.190] their research. Thats another great way to get them in the [00:15:09.210] platform. [00:15:13.119] And we're actually at our time already, if [00:15:15.229] you can believe that um I'm going to flip [00:15:17.418] back to my presentation just to give you some wrap up [00:15:19.548] information. But while I do, does anyone have any [00:15:21.668] questions about anything [00:15:23.690] I may have glossed over quickly [00:15:25.759] that you may want to take a deeper look at or anything [00:15:27.849] like that.
