[00:00:05.118] Hello, everyone. Welcome into our 15 [00:00:07.459] minutes to mastery session today, we're [00:00:09.579] going to be talking about how your students [00:00:11.710] can talk to the text with their Gale In Context [00:00:14.228] resources. My name is Amber Winters [00:00:16.519] and I am a training consultant here at [00:00:18.559] Gale. [00:00:20.179] So first, I do just want to point out that what we're going [00:00:22.269] to talk about today is going to be available [00:00:24.399] in all of the in context resources. Your learning [00:00:26.708] community has access to. So that [00:00:28.750] includes our three cross curricular resources. [00:00:31.239] So these strategies will work at the [00:00:33.490] elementary level all the way up to the high school [00:00:35.590] level and it will also be found beneficial [00:00:37.889] for the different subject specific resources [00:00:40.359] we have including our social studies [00:00:42.368] resources, our two current events, [00:00:44.603] our science resources and our newer [00:00:46.774] el A resource which is Galen context [00:00:48.865] literature. Each of these resources [00:00:51.103] has the same highlights and notes functionality [00:00:53.793] that's going to allow your users to [00:00:56.414] kind of go through that talking to the text [00:00:58.444] process. [00:01:01.770] And I do want to quickly talk about that highlights and [00:01:03.868] notes tool because that's what your students are going to use [00:01:06.120] as they're talking to the text within the resource. [00:01:09.028] So it's a really nice and clean layout. Your [00:01:11.159] students will be able to just click and drag over any [00:01:13.329] piece of text that they want to remember [00:01:16.040] they want to ask a question about whatever it [00:01:18.069] is within their article and they'll get [00:01:20.219] this nice pop up that's gonna let them choose a highlight [00:01:22.370] color. And then here they can ask [00:01:24.400] their question or make their comments or [00:01:26.430] whatever they're trying to do. They'll be able to [00:01:28.480] do that right here under this uh little [00:01:30.939] text box and they'll be able to save that content. [00:01:34.338] And once they do get all of that sorted out, [00:01:37.000] we do save all of those highlights and notes for the [00:01:39.069] duration of the session. So as long as they're signed [00:01:41.329] in under our highlights and notes button [00:01:43.349] up top here, [00:01:44.680] you see your students get this nice clean organized [00:01:47.109] page that's going to have everything they highlighted [00:01:49.459] with the color they highlighted in. [00:01:51.599] They're going to have a link back to whatever article [00:01:53.709] they were looking at, they're going to have a bibliography. [00:01:56.430] So this highlights a notes tool is really what we're featuring [00:01:58.819] today when we're talking about getting your kids, [00:02:01.430] you know, physically engaged with the text. [00:02:03.510] So you're not printing it out and [00:02:05.528] handing them highlighters and things like that. They're [00:02:07.659] doing it on the platform itself, they're getting [00:02:09.679] engaged without having to waste all that paper [00:02:11.949] and all that time. [00:02:14.838] So a few strategies for success. If you're planning [00:02:16.949] on using these highlights and notes, the first [00:02:19.419] as always model the tool, we'll take a look [00:02:21.460] at the tool in a second and I'll model how to do [00:02:23.588] it. But you definitely want to work [00:02:25.710] as a group with your students. Pull up whatever [00:02:27.868] article you want, whatever is interesting to you or to [00:02:29.919] your students that day and show them how to [00:02:32.008] use the highlights and notes tool. It is a fairly [00:02:34.229] simple tool, but I always suggest [00:02:36.520] just walk them through it first. So then they're not worried [00:02:38.750] about making sure they, [00:02:41.099] they're doing the proper [00:02:43.028] proper walkthrough of the tool. And [00:02:45.338] you also want to make sure they know where [00:02:47.409] their highlights and notes are stored on the platform [00:02:49.899] because once they're done talking to their texts [00:02:51.969] and annotating the text, most likely [00:02:54.099] they're gonna want to take those annotations with them [00:02:56.588] either to keep future reference or maybe to [00:02:58.649] send to you. If this is something that you're going to be graded, [00:03:01.169] you're going to be grading. So make sure [00:03:03.219] they know how to access that highlights and notes section [00:03:05.588] before you get started as well. [00:03:08.508] Once you have that ready to go and your students know how [00:03:10.879] to find an article and how to highlight it. [00:03:13.449] Have them choose different colors. So a lot [00:03:15.580] of times when we physically talk to [00:03:17.599] the text and you are writing on an actual physical [00:03:19.639] piece of paper, we'll use different [00:03:22.139] symbols and things like that to [00:03:24.538] denote what we're writing. So we can really easily go [00:03:26.588] back and look and say, OK, this is this symbol. This means [00:03:28.838] I had a question here here, here and here. [00:03:31.528] Obviously, we don't have symbols available [00:03:33.699] within our resource. So the best way to do [00:03:35.770] that virtually is to have them choose different [00:03:37.909] highlight colors for different [00:03:40.080] ideas. So maybe they're highlighting [00:03:42.199] every, every bit that they have [00:03:44.250] a question on in orange. And then [00:03:46.288] if they're making comments that maybe their [00:03:48.429] comments are going to be purple, um [00:03:50.800] maybe they're highlighting an, an individual's [00:03:53.199] opinion is an opinion piece and they're going to highlight [00:03:55.639] any opinion in pink and then any [00:03:58.288] evidence in green, [00:04:00.618] the list goes on and on. But have your students [00:04:02.919] choose colors before they get started. So [00:04:05.330] that way they know this is how I'm going to keep myself [00:04:07.719] organized. [00:04:09.368] Of course, the step is pretty obvious, but allow time [00:04:11.460] for reading. So give your students time to [00:04:13.558] read through their article either individually [00:04:15.860] if you want them just talking to the text by themselves [00:04:18.199] or in a group. If you'd prefer a group setting, you [00:04:20.238] can have them read through that way as well [00:04:22.309] and have all of them just talk to the text [00:04:24.329] on one computer. So have them all sharing [00:04:26.600] a computer and, and marking up that individual [00:04:29.040] document [00:04:31.470] and then once all of that's done, they've read the full [00:04:33.819] article and they're ready to go, you would want [00:04:35.879] them to get the highlights and notes out of the [00:04:38.000] platform form because their highlights and notes are [00:04:40.019] session based. So if your user [00:04:42.220] signs off or if you know they're signed off [00:04:44.298] due activity, you know, they go to lunch and they come back and [00:04:46.309] they're signed off, all of their highlights and notes [00:04:48.399] are gone. So they're going to need to get the highlighted [00:04:50.579] notes out of the platform and I will [00:04:52.730] show you how they can do that in two different ways to hold [00:04:54.790] on to that content. [00:04:58.269] So let's go ahead and take a look at this. Now, I haven't seen [00:05:00.338] any questions pop up, but as I'm switching [00:05:02.449] my screen here, does anyone have any questions [00:05:04.548] for me? OK, [00:05:08.369] I don't see any. So I went ahead and just pulled [00:05:10.379] up an article already. This is from Galen context [00:05:12.649] high school. But again, all of our in context [00:05:15.139] resources including Galen context elementary, [00:05:18.100] use the same process as well. So this is going [00:05:20.220] to work no matter which resource you're in. [00:05:23.319] So I found my article here and now I'm going to start [00:05:25.488] to look through and I'm just going to find bits that I think [00:05:27.559] are important here and I'm just gonna click [00:05:29.730] and drag over them. So maybe I have a question [00:05:31.988] about this. [00:05:37.269] Hopefully your students have much more [00:05:39.480] engaged and better questions than me, but [00:05:41.910] they can ask their question or make their comment, whatever [00:05:44.160] it may be and they can choose their color. [00:05:46.819] Ok. Maybe they don't quite [00:05:48.869] know a word, [00:05:50.488] systemic biases, maybe they're not [00:05:52.559] quite sure. So maybe they'll highlight any [00:05:54.649] words they don't know in yellow [00:05:59.209] again, hopefully much better at [00:06:01.428] not taking the me, [00:06:02.790] but they'll be able to go through and they can highlight in whatever [00:06:04.949] colors they want [00:06:06.329] as many times as they want. So they'll be able [00:06:08.350] to go through and mark up this full text [00:06:10.809] here as much as they want. [00:06:14.290] And I will mention especially um within [00:06:16.629] this article and within a lot of articles you'll see [00:06:18.790] things like critical thinking questions. [00:06:21.238] So even though this isn't technically part of the article, [00:06:23.559] these are nice to bring forward for your students [00:06:25.619] as well, just as they're reading through, oftentimes, [00:06:28.108] it's helpful for them to read through and you'll see they can [00:06:30.230] even click and highlight over these questions. [00:06:32.730] And they could answer them right here if they wanted to, [00:06:35.569] you know, that could be something really simple for [00:06:37.608] you to do kind of as a quick formative [00:06:39.858] assessment, have them answer these critical [00:06:41.889] thinking questions by highlighting them and typing [00:06:43.928] out the answer [00:06:48.649] and then they'll be able to send it over to you. [00:06:52.428] So once your student has their texts, [00:06:54.548] all um all written up, [00:06:56.649] all noted up, they're good to go, they read the full [00:06:58.699] article, they're going to want to hold on [00:07:00.838] to this information and they can do that in a few different [00:07:02.920] ways. If they want to keep the full [00:07:05.100] article itself with the highlights [00:07:07.350] included on there, they can do that by [00:07:09.428] sending over to their drives, either Google or Microsoft, [00:07:12.350] they could email it to themselves, they could download [00:07:14.678] it to their desktop or they could print [00:07:17.088] it. So either any of these options [00:07:19.369] are going to hold on to those highlights and those notes [00:07:21.569] for students, the highlights are going to appear [00:07:23.980] in the text and then the notes will appear [00:07:26.028] at the very bottom of the page. You'll have the actual [00:07:28.540] notes they took with those highlights. [00:07:32.079] We also have the option for students to [00:07:34.238] just save the highlights and notes that they [00:07:36.298] took. So again, that's found [00:07:38.338] under our highlights and notes button up top [00:07:40.369] here, you'll see. I've got this little highlights and notes [00:07:42.410] icon. When [00:07:44.750] I click it, it's going to show the text [00:07:46.970] that I highlighted on this article as well [00:07:49.019] as any notes that I took. If [00:07:51.048] I hit my view, I'll highlight the notes button here. [00:07:55.588] This is going to pull it forward in a little more [00:07:57.699] detail. And what I love about this page [00:07:59.829] is it's very clean for your students. So [00:08:01.889] they're going to see exactly what they highlighted the [00:08:03.970] full text of their highlight. [00:08:06.100] They have their notes here, they can edit their notes. [00:08:08.178] So I just wrote, what does this mean? Maybe [00:08:10.449] I need to elaborate on that a little bit more. [00:08:12.600] I can hit edit [00:08:14.269] oops and [00:08:16.338] save it right here. And that will change for me [00:08:20.100] at the very bottom of the page. We also have a running [00:08:22.149] bibliography. So if students are [00:08:24.250] going to need this citation for something, [00:08:26.338] if they save this page, they already have [00:08:28.689] a citation premade for them. Which [00:08:30.850] for me as a former teacher, I love the idea [00:08:32.969] of not having to [00:08:34.500] kind of walk students through how [00:08:36.649] to cite each individual thing. They'll be able to [00:08:38.700] pull their citations off of this page [00:08:40.808] instead. [00:08:42.758] And they also get links to the articles here [00:08:44.908] on this page as well. So they'll get this persistent [00:08:47.028] URL. So if they wanna go drop back [00:08:49.369] into this article later on, they'll have access [00:08:51.467] to it right here. [00:08:53.788] And I mentioned previously that the best [00:08:55.859] practice when they're using these highlights is to use [00:08:57.950] different highlight colors for different things. [00:09:00.729] If they do decide to do that, they can actually label [00:09:02.899] them on this page here as well. If I go [00:09:05.029] up to my toolbar up top, you'll see. I have this labels [00:09:07.399] button here [00:09:09.668] and these are the colors I've used. It's only going to show [00:09:11.700] me the colors that I've used. So I may [00:09:13.969] have this big questions, [00:09:19.080] comments, maybe let's say evidence [00:09:21.119] is the last one [00:09:23.469] so I can label these [00:09:25.340] and you'll see. Now I have a highlight legend at the top [00:09:27.389] here. And this is helpful for [00:09:29.418] me going back so I can just skim through [00:09:31.700] all the questions that I have in this article. Let [00:09:33.820] me just look at all the purple. So this one and this one [00:09:36.090] I know those are my questions. It's also helpful [00:09:38.259] for you as an educator. Again, if you're planning [00:09:41.000] on having your students submit something like this [00:09:43.119] to you, you may want them to label this. [00:09:45.178] So it's a lot easier for you to explore, you know, a lot [00:09:47.389] easier for you to [00:09:49.090] evaluate your students. If [00:09:51.139] this is all ready to go and [00:09:53.178] labeled for you. [00:09:56.070] And with this page, again, it's only [00:09:58.099] saved for the session. So if your students [00:10:00.808] sign off, you know, again, they [00:10:02.820] go to lunch and they signed off student activity or they just close [00:10:05.019] out of the browser, this will disappear. [00:10:07.869] So we have a few different options to get this out [00:10:09.940] of the platform as well. With this, you'll see, I have [00:10:12.489] my send to option which just [00:10:14.500] like the article itself, lets me send [00:10:16.609] over to Google Drive onedrive [00:10:18.739] or I can email it. [00:10:21.729] I can also download it again to my desktop [00:10:23.798] or I can print it out. I [00:10:25.808] realized I forgot to mention while [00:10:28.139] I was on the article itself. But if [00:10:30.229] I send over to Google Drive or onedrive, [00:10:32.639] it does actually go over as a workable [00:10:34.950] document, both the article as well as this highlights [00:10:37.298] a notes page. So if your students choose [00:10:39.379] to do that. Once they click back into their drive, [00:10:41.904] they can actually edit their highlights and edit their [00:10:43.974] notes there as well. So they can really take [00:10:46.644] the full customization with them. If they do need [00:10:48.774] to change it up, once they're off of the platform, [00:10:51.065] they'll be able to do that within their drives. [00:10:53.413] And it does say they're permanently in their drive. [00:10:55.884] They don't need to worry about, you know, the article disappearing, [00:10:59.389] you know, after 30 days, 90 days, it's [00:11:01.469] always going to be in their drive in a dedicated [00:11:03.719] folder. So they can always go back and take a look [00:11:05.729] at what they were thinking previously. [00:11:07.960] Maybe they've learned you know, new [00:11:10.048] information. They want to compare that to what they thought [00:11:12.158] previously. They're always going to have access [00:11:14.450] to that under our highlights and notes section [00:11:16.690] here. And [00:11:19.710] I will also mention these highlights, notes work [00:11:21.908] for any entry that is [00:11:23.918] text based. So of course [00:11:26.269] our basic reference articles, but [00:11:28.369] also news reports and magazines. [00:11:31.038] if you're in a resource that has primary sources, [00:11:33.450] your students can talk to a primary source [00:11:35.514] right here on this platform. So it's [00:11:37.524] not just your standard reference articles, any [00:11:39.695] article within this page can utilize these [00:11:41.884] highlights and notes functionalities. [00:11:44.413] So your students can really talk to talk to [00:11:46.445] a wide variety of texts that we offer them [00:11:48.514] within the resource. [00:11:51.928] Now again, I've not seen any questions at all [00:11:54.000] today. So I'm going to go [00:11:56.080] ahead and jump back one more time here to my slides. [00:11:58.649] And while I do again, I'll please ask that [00:12:00.719] you enter in any questions you have into [00:12:02.908] the Q and A and I'll make sure to answer those for [00:12:05.139] you while you're doing that. I have [00:12:07.200] some quick wrap up information for [00:12:09.308] you. If you need more information about [00:12:11.960] future webinars or about this [00:12:14.000] webinar in particular, you can send me [00:12:16.099] an email. again, my name [00:12:18.109] is Amber Winters and it's just [00:12:20.389] amber.winters@cengage.com [00:12:21.908] If you want to talk a little bit about how this [00:12:23.940] is going to be implemented [00:12:26.099] specifically in your learning community, you wanna [00:12:28.178] talk about how you can get engaged [00:12:30.479] with it. [00:12:31.298] You can reach out to your customer success manager. [00:12:41.538] If you want to talk about gaining access to any [00:12:43.548] in context resource that you don't currently have access [00:12:45.940] to reach out to your sales consultant, [00:12:48.009] you don't know who that is. It's support.gale.com/repfinder [00:12:51.359] you'll find that information there [00:12:54.460] and we do have other pre-recorded webinars, [00:12:57.129] training materials, short tutorials [00:12:59.250] activities, less of plans, all that good stuff [00:13:01.288] on our support site, which is support.gale.com. [00:13:04.649] So if you're looking for additional training materials [00:13:06.859] or even marketing materials or technical [00:13:08.969] documents, take a look at that support [00:13:11.019] site and you should be able to find what you need there [00:13:14.178] and we have about two minutes left. So if you don't [00:13:16.440] mind spending that two minutes to answer [00:13:18.639] our survey, you'll see, I've got a QR code [00:13:20.719] on my screen or you can go to [00:13:23.168] bit.ly/galetrainingeval [00:13:25.090] It would be greatly appreciated to make sure [00:13:27.298] that we're always covering the content you [00:13:29.408] need in these webinars. [00:13:32.239] And again, I haven't seen any questions pop [00:13:34.279] up, so I'm going to go ahead and end for the day [00:13:36.509] and I do appreciate everyone being on the line [00:13:38.729] and hopefully we'll see you all in future sessions. [00:13:41.109] Bye bye now.
