[00:00:05.049] Welcome in everyone today. We're going to [00:00:07.099] be exploring Gale in context for educators. [00:00:10.009] My name is Amber Winters and I'm a senior [00:00:12.079] training consultant here at Gale. Excited [00:00:14.239] to be here with you today [00:00:16.109] and we've got a pretty jam packed agenda here [00:00:18.260] today. Gal and context for educators is a pretty [00:00:20.458] hefty resource. So we're going to be exploring [00:00:22.750] a lot. So first off, we'll have a brief resource [00:00:25.120] overview just so we all kind of on [00:00:27.179] the same page with what gal and context for educators [00:00:29.658] is, then we're going to review some key [00:00:31.908] features that you're going to find that you may want to explore [00:00:34.389] once we get off this session today, just be to become [00:00:36.668] a little more comfortable with them. [00:00:38.380] We'll spend the majority of the time actually walking [00:00:40.658] through the platform though. So you can get a feel [00:00:42.700] of a few of the different workflows that are available, [00:00:45.689] things like how to make your own folders, how to [00:00:47.750] make and attach assessments, how [00:00:49.859] to find lesson plans as well as how to get [00:00:52.000] some additional support. So as you move [00:00:54.079] forward with the resource, maybe you do [00:00:56.158] get just a little bit lost, which happens [00:00:58.380] to the best of us. I'll show you where you can find some support [00:01:00.579] materials to help you out there. [00:01:02.478] And then at the very end of the session, we [00:01:04.790] should have a little bit of time for some contact [00:01:06.980] information that I'll forward along to you. I'll [00:01:09.099] try to answer questions as we go through the session [00:01:11.400] today. Again, the Q and A box is already open. [00:01:13.680] Go ahead and put your questions in there. [00:01:15.510] But if I can't get to them as we're moving along, [00:01:17.859] the Q and A is getting a little bit backed up, [00:01:20.260] I will save questions until the very end of the [00:01:22.319] session. And don't worry, your questions will [00:01:24.379] be answered no matter what, even if we have to stay [00:01:26.409] a few minutes late, We'll make sure to get every [00:01:28.500] question answered today. [00:01:30.939] So let's go ahead and get started. So gala context [00:01:33.269] for educators at the very base [00:01:35.650] is a platform that's going to allow you to [00:01:37.689] search through all of your student facing [00:01:39.739] in context resources. So [00:01:41.930] you'll see on the left side of my screen here, these are [00:01:44.028] all of the in context resources that we have available [00:01:46.569] to you. Of course, there's a lot [00:01:48.459] Your collection may be slightly different [00:01:50.489] than this. You may may not have access to [00:01:52.790] let's say gale in context biography or something [00:01:55.010] like that. But gil in context for educators [00:01:57.469] is going to search through everything you do have [00:01:59.519] access to and that does actually [00:02:01.638] include Gil ebooks now. So if you have [00:02:03.668] Gil ebooks in your collection, you'll find [00:02:05.849] those within gal in context for educators [00:02:07.959] as well. [00:02:09.139] So at the very base of gal and context [00:02:11.349] for educators, it's just letting you pull [00:02:13.409] all of the student content together. [00:02:15.520] So you can really easily curate your lessons, [00:02:18.020] build out projects, help develop [00:02:20.330] different research materials for students. [00:02:22.899] You're going to be doing that all on this one platform [00:02:25.449] and it is specifically for you. So students [00:02:28.050] will not be accessing gil and context [00:02:30.069] for educators at all. [00:02:32.349] And in addition to just finding the different [00:02:34.580] student content available within all of [00:02:36.649] your in context. Resources gallon [00:02:38.778] context for educators also has some [00:02:41.050] some resources and some features [00:02:43.379] specific to you as educators. [00:02:45.689] The first being full lesson plans, we've got [00:02:47.939] over 1000 lesson plans now [00:02:50.338] for all subjects, this is cross curricular. [00:02:52.618] So you'll find social studies content el [00:02:54.679] a science, social, emotional learning, [00:02:56.969] financial literacy, the other literacy, [00:02:59.139] the list goes on and on, but you'll find that [00:03:01.169] full lesson plans that are going to have [00:03:03.689] learning outcomes, different pieces of [00:03:05.770] differentiation. If you need to differentiate [00:03:08.058] for different levels of students in your class, [00:03:10.460] we also include all of the rubrics and we [00:03:12.528] now have assessments linked to each [00:03:15.399] full lesson plan. So if you want [00:03:17.669] to gauge your students understanding [00:03:19.849] and development through this lesson we do [00:03:21.919] have a quiz already made for you that you'll [00:03:24.028] be able to click into. [00:03:26.669] In addition to those full lesson plans, [00:03:28.740] we have full assessment authoring [00:03:30.868] and assigning capabilities. So again, [00:03:33.270] our lesson plans already have pre created [00:03:35.639] assessments attached. But if you want [00:03:37.819] to build your own to attach for students [00:03:39.899] to kind of gauge specific bits of information, [00:03:42.149] you need to make sure that they've hit, [00:03:43.919] you'll be able to make your own right here on this [00:03:45.929] platform. [00:03:48.210] And you will have access to quite a few [00:03:50.469] different types of assessments to create. [00:03:52.618] We're going to explore that in the resource today, [00:03:54.719] but you'll even be able to see just from this quick [00:03:57.000] screenshot here. We have everything [00:03:59.199] from multiple choice to drawing [00:04:01.689] to graphing, even chemistry, [00:04:04.240] kind of templates for your assessments, you'll be able [00:04:06.500] to make your assessment right on the platform and [00:04:08.919] assign it right on the platform as well. So it's really a nice [00:04:11.270] one stop shop for you to make sure students [00:04:13.429] are getting the information that they need. [00:04:16.759] You also have a pretty extensive [00:04:18.898] collaboration feature available for [00:04:20.997] you and your colleagues. So you'll be able [00:04:23.048] to find to share all of the content you [00:04:25.148] find in the resource. So if you [00:04:27.718] pair up and teach together, if your team teachers, [00:04:30.009] if you're just working with your department as a whole [00:04:32.269] and you're sharing out different bits of content [00:04:34.478] or maybe you're just a group of teachers who are teaching [00:04:36.687] the same course, you can share all [00:04:38.807] of your content right here on this platform and kind [00:04:40.898] of start to work together. [00:04:42.678] So as you build out your information, [00:04:44.869] you and your colleagues aren't recreating the [00:04:46.910] the wheel, you're not all building a folder [00:04:49.119] about [00:04:50.798] credit card debt. You can build one [00:04:52.970] folder and work together and kind of organize [00:04:55.040] it all for your students. [00:04:58.379] And finally, you've got some great kind [00:05:00.459] of student facing tools that are going to help [00:05:02.569] you engage your students a bit. So in addition [00:05:04.709] to just the great content that Galen context [00:05:07.178] provides, you, you can also now add things [00:05:09.369] like instructors, notes to bits of content. [00:05:11.790] You can annotate the text to pull your students [00:05:14.000] attention to something specific. You [00:05:16.129] can also do things like take clippings of text. [00:05:18.379] So if you only want students to maybe see one [00:05:20.619] or two paragraphs in an article, you can actually [00:05:22.649] do that and assign that to them. So they can only see [00:05:25.309] the the bit of content that you feel is most [00:05:27.319] important for them. So it's a really nice way [00:05:29.639] to kind of edit what your students are seeing [00:05:31.838] to make sure they're seeing exactly what you [00:05:33.899] want them to see and that's maybe getting distracted [00:05:35.939] by other things. [00:05:38.920] So let's take just a quicker look [00:05:40.939] at some of these different kind of features that [00:05:42.949] we have available and then we're going to kind of dive in. [00:05:45.119] So first off are our lesson plans. [00:05:47.428] So right at the top, we're going to give an activity [00:05:49.709] overview and all of our lessons [00:05:51.899] are attached to a grade. So you'll [00:05:53.920] see a target grade here of grade eight. But [00:05:56.079] we do just mention that these this can [00:05:58.088] be applicable for grades six through eight. [00:06:00.350] So you may need to edit a little bit for lower [00:06:02.379] level students, but they might benefit [00:06:05.028] from this lesson plan as well. [00:06:07.559] Underneath that, we're going to include the learning [00:06:09.738] outcomes as well as the activity sequence [00:06:11.869] itself. That's where you'll find [00:06:13.889] any, any differentiation as well as [00:06:15.899] any activity pieces. So if we have a chart [00:06:18.149] students need to fill out or maybe we have a full rubric, [00:06:20.858] you're gonna find that um towards the [00:06:22.928] bottom of this lesson plan, you'll be able to print [00:06:25.040] that out and hand that out to your students. [00:06:28.709] The my tool section is where assessments [00:06:30.720] are going to be found. So again, every lesson [00:06:32.858] plan ha at least [00:06:34.970] one assessment attached to it. So you'll [00:06:36.980] be able to click and see that to see [00:06:39.009] if you do want students to take that assessment or not. [00:06:42.290] And then at the very bottom of the screen, you can't [00:06:44.350] see it on my screenshot because it's just too long. [00:06:46.720] We do have our linked standards. So [00:06:48.838] we have links at NGSS [00:06:51.238] and Common core standards. [00:06:53.569] So you'll be able to take a look at those. If you prefer [00:06:55.639] to have those linked just right away, you'll already have [00:06:57.838] them on the page for you. [00:07:00.798] Moving forward from lesson plans here, [00:07:03.040] our assessment feature is pretty extensive. [00:07:05.858] And again, as I showed previously, assessments [00:07:08.528] are going to be listed under the my tools section [00:07:10.928] for you. So as you're working through specific [00:07:13.269] documents and editing them for your students, [00:07:15.389] you'll always be able to, to see what [00:07:17.625] assessments you have linked and you can turn [00:07:19.764] those off and on for students. So [00:07:21.824] if you don't actually want them to take an assessment, you [00:07:23.884] can toggle that off or you can just delete [00:07:26.084] it if you'd prefer to do it that way, but toggling [00:07:28.184] it off will keep it on the document for you in case [00:07:30.233] you want to turn it on later [00:07:33.220] assessment authoring actually has its own [00:07:35.259] section. So you'll be able to click in, you'll [00:07:37.500] be able to find premade assessments that have been [00:07:39.649] been created by you, by other [00:07:41.699] people at your school or by Gale. [00:07:43.759] And you'll also be able to make your own questions [00:07:47.379] and then assessment results are found on [00:07:49.439] the platform as well. So again, one stop [00:07:51.559] shopping, all student responses [00:07:53.738] are going to be found in the my Class resources [00:07:56.178] section, which we'll take a look at once [00:07:58.238] we jump into the platform, but [00:08:00.459] you'll be able to get kind of a really quick glance [00:08:02.769] of ST student scores [00:08:05.119] and student outcomes and you'll also be able [00:08:07.290] to provide feedback for your students. So [00:08:09.309] if you read through maybe an essay question [00:08:11.509] that you've attached to an assessment, you'll [00:08:13.540] be able to read through that essay question, provide [00:08:15.819] them with feedback and then grade it right on the [00:08:17.838] platform as well. [00:08:21.290] Moving on from there, our collaboration tools [00:08:23.379] are really focused around folders. [00:08:25.509] So folders are the starting point of pretty much [00:08:27.639] everything you do in this resource. As [00:08:29.889] you find content to be able to edit that [00:08:32.038] content, to share it out. You'll need [00:08:34.048] to add it to a folder that you're able [00:08:36.200] to create and you can make as many folders as you [00:08:38.279] like. You'll see. I have a lot and [00:08:40.428] name them really whatever you want as well. And [00:08:42.558] these folders can be shared both collaboratively [00:08:45.080] or just as a copy. [00:08:46.808] So you can [00:08:48.779] just send the information that you have kind of as a static [00:08:51.168] version to other teachers. If you don't want them to [00:08:53.178] edit what you've already made or [00:08:55.440] you can share a, a kind of collaborative [00:08:57.769] folder and you can each add and remove things [00:08:59.918] from that same folder. [00:09:03.960] Finally, our great instructional tools are going [00:09:06.090] to be found on every piece of content here as [00:09:08.229] well. At the top, you'll be able to add [00:09:10.349] an instructor's note. So maybe it's read [00:09:12.580] this assignment before Friday or it's listen [00:09:14.849] to this podcast and write down three [00:09:17.029] questions that you have, you'll be able to add [00:09:19.070] those instructors notes for your students. [00:09:21.928] The my tools panel also gives you a few [00:09:23.940] different options to annotate the text. [00:09:25.969] If you want to highlight different pieces and add more [00:09:28.158] specific notes, we also have [00:09:30.320] standards listed under the my tools. So if [00:09:32.349] you want to see which standards are attached [00:09:34.460] to a piece of text, you'll be able [00:09:36.519] to do that. And again, your assessments [00:09:38.658] are found here in this my tools as well. [00:09:40.668] If you want to add an assessment while you're editing [00:09:43.099] a specific document. [00:09:46.229] And finally, we have shareable student links [00:09:48.529] that are going to let students see their own version. [00:09:50.979] So they're not going to see the same thing that you [00:09:53.048] see on the platform. They're not going to see this [00:09:55.219] little edit box where they can [00:09:57.330] change the text and type different things. [00:09:59.340] Theirs is going to be static. So they're just going to [00:10:01.418] see what you provided them. [00:10:03.308] So we'll take a look at what shareable student links [00:10:05.460] look like today. [00:10:07.830] Now, I really want to dive in because this is a lot [00:10:10.019] to go through and I'm really excited to kind of [00:10:12.219] dig in a little bit. But does anyone [00:10:14.239] have any questions at all before we really just [00:10:16.779] start exploring? [00:10:21.149] OK. I don't see any. So [00:10:23.219] let me give me a second here. I might have been signed out [00:10:25.359] of this platform. So I want to make [00:10:27.399] sure. Yep. OK. So [00:10:29.408] I was logged out. So when you do click [00:10:31.500] into gal and context for educators, this is the screen [00:10:33.769] you're going to see. At first [00:10:35.820] you'll see. You can't really do much on the screen [00:10:37.940] because you're not signed in yet. [00:10:39.700] So you will need to click login create [00:10:41.729] account and [00:10:43.759] you'll need to use either your Google account [00:10:45.808] or your Microsoft account. I always recommend [00:10:48.090] using your school account just because [00:10:50.428] when you decide to share out with colleagues, [00:10:52.859] you do need to send it to a specific [00:10:55.279] email. So you wanna make sure everyone knows [00:10:57.330] what email you're using. So I always recommend [00:10:59.830] whatever your school email is. [00:11:02.399] So I actually have a Microsoft account. So I'm going [00:11:04.538] to sign in with Microsoft today. [00:11:09.710] And if for whatever reason, you weren't already signed [00:11:12.029] into your account before you clicked into Gallic [00:11:14.308] context for educators. It would [00:11:16.450] prompt you to sign in and then you'd just be launched [00:11:18.739] on your own. [00:11:20.590] But let's orient yourself a bit here to the home page. [00:11:23.269] So I first want to point out in the middle of [00:11:25.379] the page, you'll see here. I've got my jump back [00:11:27.538] in section [00:11:28.639] and this is going to pull forward the last three folders [00:11:31.190] that I worked in. So again, as I mentioned, [00:11:33.359] folders are kind of like the building blocks of this resource. [00:11:36.349] So these are the last topics that I've started [00:11:38.719] to kind of mess around with. [00:11:40.479] This is great if you have to pause whatever you're [00:11:42.519] doing. You know, a student comes in or [00:11:44.489] you just run out of time and need a break. [00:11:46.759] You'll be able to jump right back in here on this [00:11:48.798] home page. You won't need to go to your folder [00:11:51.058] section right away if you don't want to. [00:11:53.489] And at the bottom of this home page, this [00:11:55.739] learning center is a really valuable tool [00:11:57.908] for you, especially moving forward as you start to [00:12:00.000] do more advanced things in this resource, [00:12:02.479] this is going to help you kind of figure out how to do that. [00:12:05.509] So I'm going to click into the learning center quickly. [00:12:07.710] So you can just get a feel of what we have here. [00:12:11.340] You'll see a lot of this is video based [00:12:13.820] and our video tutorials are generally around [00:12:16.379] two minutes. Sometimes they're less, [00:12:18.619] you'll see this one is a minute 30 but we do [00:12:20.668] try to keep them brief and focused [00:12:23.129] here. So you'll see some of the different options. We have [00:12:25.349] like organizing your resources, [00:12:28.379] teaching with your materials. We have quite a few different [00:12:31.250] um ideas on how [00:12:33.269] you can teach, using the information that you find. You'll [00:12:35.320] see. Even at the bottom here, we have a seat [00:12:37.519] in action section [00:12:39.369] which is going to show you how we've kind of [00:12:42.009] worked through this and built out units and [00:12:44.080] things like that. [00:12:47.000] And I'll also mention as we go through the resource [00:12:49.418] today you'll notice in a lot of the, the [00:12:51.599] banners you'll see little embedded [00:12:54.058] videos that are going to help you with whatever page you're [00:12:56.200] on. I'll try to point them out as we move [00:12:58.450] along. But again, they're usually around two [00:13:00.639] minutes, sometimes less than that. [00:13:02.940] And they're just really helpful if you get [00:13:04.960] a little bit stuck. So you will find those [00:13:07.058] as you move along through this resource. [00:13:10.678] Now, I'm just gonna go back to the home page. I can do [00:13:12.700] that by hitting four educators in my [00:13:15.048] banner or I can just hit the back button [00:13:17.229] either way works fine. [00:13:23.440] And now the main navigation you're going to have [00:13:25.519] in the platform aside from of course, the search [00:13:27.889] which is going to be here is going to be [00:13:29.940] found on this right hand side. So you'll [00:13:32.090] see, we've got three browse options here. [00:13:34.609] The first is just browsing through curriculum standards. [00:13:37.109] So if you prefer to start that way, if you have [00:13:39.219] a specific standard in mind, as opposed [00:13:41.349] to a topic, you can browse through your [00:13:43.379] standards, [00:13:44.750] you can browse through subjects. So maybe [00:13:47.178] you teach and cell division and [00:13:49.229] you don't have anything specific in mind, you [00:13:51.269] can browse down to that subject. [00:13:53.519] We also have a separate section [00:13:55.558] for lesson plans. So if you're looking just [00:13:57.729] for a lesson plan, you don't want to see any student content [00:14:00.119] right now, [00:14:01.200] you can browse and search through lesson plans. [00:14:03.750] I will say if you run a basic search, you [00:14:06.048] will find lesson plans within your search results. [00:14:09.879] And then right next to lesson plans, we have our little person [00:14:12.288] icon here and that's where all of [00:14:14.389] your personal content is going to be housed. [00:14:16.739] So the my class resources section [00:14:19.109] is going to hold all of your folders which [00:14:21.320] have all of your content. [00:14:22.950] We've got our assessment authoring platform [00:14:25.239] here. So if you want to, you know, start [00:14:28.210] your process with making an assessment before [00:14:30.340] you even find content, you can do [00:14:32.379] that by hitting this little person icon [00:14:34.609] and you can also see any assignments and [00:14:36.710] grades that you have within your platform here as [00:14:38.769] well. So if you need to start off there, you [00:14:41.048] can do that under this little person icon. [00:14:44.250] And we're going to look at these later because first I [00:14:46.298] want to show you how you can actually find content [00:14:48.399] in the resource and what you can do with that content. [00:14:51.259] So I'm just gonna kind of go [00:14:53.710] one step at a time. We're going to take a look at everything. [00:14:56.109] So let's click into lesson plans first [00:14:59.099] and these lesson plans are unique to gal [00:15:01.119] and context for educators. You're not going to find [00:15:03.288] them in any of the other in context. Resources. [00:15:06.109] These have been specially made just for [00:15:08.190] you linked to curriculum standards and ready to [00:15:10.229] go. As I mentioned [00:15:12.408] sometimes in the banner, you're going to see little tutorials. [00:15:14.908] This one is a quick tutorial about lesson [00:15:17.168] plans. So if you want to get just a background [00:15:19.460] before it gets started, you have that here [00:15:22.950] scrolling down on those lesson plans page. [00:15:25.288] We've got a really powerful search and filter [00:15:28.019] kind of section right here. So you [00:15:30.119] can just, you know, basic search for the lesson [00:15:32.210] plans if you want to if you have a specific topic in [00:15:34.229] mind. But I really like using these filters [00:15:36.658] to really narrow down what I'm looking for. You'll see, [00:15:38.729] we've got the option to filter by grade [00:15:41.418] and I can choose multiple. So if I maybe want [00:15:43.519] to see all [00:15:45.058] and 1/4 5th and sixth grade lessons, [00:15:47.519] I can certainly do that. I have the option [00:15:49.739] to narrow down by subject or by subject [00:15:51.928] area. Subject is more broad. [00:15:54.408] So you'll see el a life skills, [00:15:56.500] science, social studies, subject area [00:15:58.808] gets a little bit more specific. So [00:16:00.840] biology, British literature, [00:16:02.849] cultures, [00:16:04.599] ethnic studies, forensic science, [00:16:06.830] this is going to get a little bit more in depth. [00:16:09.798] We also have the option to filter through by [00:16:12.009] duration. So if you're looking for something small, [00:16:14.190] maybe something just to start a unit, you know, you're [00:16:16.359] looking for maybe even like a little bell ringer, [00:16:18.658] you can filter that here [00:16:22.070] and you can also choose a lesson type. [00:16:24.210] So you'll see, we have experiments [00:16:26.460] pulled forward, separately learning to read, [00:16:28.719] learning to write. We have got a project [00:16:31.158] based section. We've pulled out [00:16:33.250] social emotional learning lesson plans [00:16:35.489] here. As well. If you just want to take a look at those, [00:16:37.739] we have that ability here. [00:16:41.009] But if you choose to just scroll down and browse, [00:16:43.019] you'll see on each of these lesson plan tiles, [00:16:45.139] we actually provide you with a lot of information [00:16:47.489] before you even click into the lesson plan. So [00:16:49.658] you'll see, of course, you're gonna get the title, [00:16:52.418] but you'll see, we've got a few different tags here [00:16:54.619] as well. So this is related to communicating [00:16:57.320] critical thinking, diversity, equity [00:16:59.548] inclusion and inquiry. We include [00:17:01.808] the duration here. Of course, this is an approximate [00:17:03.950] duration. You all know that this is going to change [00:17:06.279] based on your students and just [00:17:08.680] based on how your class is organized and [00:17:10.848] we also include a basic grade. And so this [00:17:12.910] particular lesson is for grades [00:17:15.160] 12 [00:17:16.209] if you're teaching 10th 11th graders, [00:17:19.229] but this looks interesting. Of course, I suggest [00:17:21.459] just clicking into it. You may need to tweak [00:17:23.818] it a little bit, maybe, bring down the [00:17:25.910] vocab a little bit, maybe change up the [00:17:27.930] activity itself. But just because it's linked [00:17:30.180] to grade 12 doesn't mean it can't be utilized [00:17:32.299] for other grades. So definitely if it's a topic [00:17:34.750] you think is going to be handy, just take a look [00:17:36.969] at it. You may just need to tweak it a bit but it'll be ready. [00:17:39.299] Besides that couple tweaks. [00:17:42.519] So let's use my filters a little bit so we can kind of [00:17:44.549] see what that looks like. Um, today I'm [00:17:46.719] going to narrow down just to high school. So I'm [00:17:48.779] going to do 9, 10 11 here. [00:17:52.019] I'm sorry, 9, 10, 11 and 12, forgot 12th [00:17:54.170] graders and then I'll hit apply [00:17:57.400] and I'll just take a quick second here because we've got a lot [00:17:59.549] of lesson plans and now you'll see, I have [00:18:01.809] my applied filter up top here. So it's [00:18:03.838] showing me that the grades I've chosen are 9, [00:18:06.189] 10, 11 or 12. [00:18:09.410] Um Let's choose a subject era too because [00:18:11.420] right now we're still rocking 685 [00:18:13.920] lesson plans. And those are not gonna be [00:18:16.009] fun to navigate all the way through. As interesting [00:18:18.199] as they are trying to read 685 [00:18:20.640] lesson plans is, is a lot. [00:18:22.799] So let's go to subject area and we'll get [00:18:24.838] really specific here. Let's do [00:18:27.809] financial literacy. [00:18:31.049] So we apply given another quick second. [00:18:33.348] Now we're down to 51 lessons. [00:18:35.459] So still a fair amount, but we're [00:18:37.549] starting to kind of narrow this down a little [00:18:39.559] bit. So we can even add more filters if we want [00:18:41.858] to maybe focus on duration this [00:18:43.930] time. But [00:18:46.259] let's kind of scroll down here. [00:18:47.930] I will quickly mention actually any [00:18:50.108] filters that you have again are going to appear [00:18:52.160] here in these little blue boxes. If [00:18:54.348] you want to get rid of a filter, you just hit these X [00:18:56.449] buttons. You don't need to go back into these [00:18:58.598] and kind of figure out where you clicked, just hit [00:19:00.670] these X buttons and the filter will [00:19:03.368] disappear. [00:19:05.170] But let's click into a lesson plan to see how this functions. [00:19:07.719] I'm just going to click into bankruptcy [00:19:09.969] today. One of our tap [00:19:12.239] ones at the top here [00:19:15.868] and we've got a quick question about webinar [00:19:18.199] recording. Yeah, Michelle, this webinar is [00:19:20.259] currently being recorded and you will [00:19:22.358] get a copy of the recording via email [00:19:24.400] tomorrow. OK. [00:19:29.729] So here's our lesson plan. Now, let me [00:19:31.759] scroll down here so you can start to kind of take a look [00:19:33.949] at what this is. So again, we're giving our [00:19:35.959] brief overview and it's going to give you [00:19:38.118] really the basics of this lesson plan [00:19:40.809] you're going to see under the my tool section. [00:19:42.920] This is the quiz that we have just automatically [00:19:45.459] attached. [00:19:46.739] If you want to take a look at the quiz, you can click [00:19:48.799] it and [00:19:51.140] then it's going to load the questions here, [00:19:56.088] scrolling down. You'll see we've got [00:19:58.479] our lesson sequence here. [00:20:00.598] We do have a rubric for this. So you'll [00:20:02.660] see I can actually hit print right here on this rubric [00:20:05.000] to hold on to it. [00:20:06.809] Sources. These are going to be the [00:20:08.838] bits of content that are going to be used [00:20:10.959] within this lesson. So all of our lesson [00:20:13.299] plans are tailored to include in context [00:20:15.838] materials. So it's going to be things [00:20:17.979] that your students would find on their own within [00:20:20.239] the student facing resources. Like [00:20:23.000] you see this one has gale in context [00:20:25.358] high school documents. It's got a few gale in [00:20:27.390] context opposing viewpoints. We've [00:20:29.549] just pulled them together and linked them for you. So [00:20:31.559] students don't have to find them on their own. You can [00:20:33.680] forward them along and have them ready to go. [00:20:36.930] Underneath. That is where we can differentiate [00:20:39.098] our instruction and we do have differentiation [00:20:41.199] for both striving learners and advanced [00:20:43.318] learners. So you can differentiate kind [00:20:45.439] of on whatever side you need to for your students. [00:20:48.500] And then we include an extension here. [00:20:50.469] And at the very bottom, as I mentioned, we [00:20:52.890] have our standards. So this [00:20:54.969] one's got a few different standards linked. We [00:20:57.088] have common core and CS [00:20:59.140] S and personal finance education standards. [00:21:02.838] And of course, this is going to change based on the [00:21:04.910] topic of the lesson itself, [00:21:07.459] but we've got all of those linked here if you need them and [00:21:09.588] then the bottom, we do have a citation here as [00:21:11.650] well. So if you need to cite this lesson plan [00:21:14.150] for whatever reason, [00:21:15.549] you can do that right here at the bottom. [00:21:21.368] Now, let's start to take a look at how we can find [00:21:23.568] some student fing content that we can forward [00:21:25.838] along to our students. Does anyone have [00:21:27.949] any question about lesson plans or how [00:21:30.000] the lesson plan filters work? [00:21:35.140] Ok. I don't see any. Let's go ahead and [00:21:37.160] keep rolling then. So I'm going to start with [00:21:39.289] curriculum standards and then we'll take a look at subjects [00:21:41.660] after [00:21:42.660] so clicking into curriculum standards in my [00:21:44.729] banner up top here. [00:21:48.779] Quickly. You'll see. We've got another tutorial [00:21:51.118] here about browsing through standards. [00:21:53.358] But on this left hand side here, we have [00:21:55.410] both state and national standards [00:21:57.459] in this platform. So it defaults to showing state [00:21:59.769] standards, but I can click over to national [00:22:02.209] authorities if I want to. And that's where you're going [00:22:04.338] to find things like NGSS and all [00:22:06.358] that good stuff. [00:22:07.809] Well, let's click into state standards and I'm located [00:22:09.979] in Michigan. So I'm going to click into Michigan's [00:22:12.209] standards today. You'll see, I can either search [00:22:14.588] for my state or I can just find it. [00:22:16.640] It's alphabetical [00:22:17.848] click into Michigan here [00:22:20.750] and now we can start to kind of click down. So you'll see [00:22:22.779] the different frameworks that we're using in Michigan. [00:22:25.479] This is going to change based on what [00:22:27.509] your state is using, of course So [00:22:29.779] we'll click into my K 12 standards. Maybe [00:22:32.029] I want to take a look at social studies [00:22:35.660] and you'll see all of the different bits I have here. [00:22:37.818] So let's go [00:22:39.309] grade seven. [00:22:42.279] And once I click all the way down, you're going to start [00:22:44.489] seeing these specific [00:22:46.568] standards with the C resources [00:22:49.729] button next to it. So that's where [00:22:51.739] you're going to find content related to these different [00:22:53.910] standards. You see there is a lot. [00:22:56.279] So you'll really be able to scroll down and click into [00:22:58.338] the content that you need right here [00:23:02.689] and I can jump back at any time if this is [00:23:04.709] actually not what I wanted to go to, I can [00:23:06.910] hit my little drop down triangle [00:23:09.670] and maybe I actually wanted to take a look at [00:23:11.719] grade six geography. I can just click [00:23:13.868] that and be [00:23:16.009] pulled right here. [00:23:17.848] It's a really simple way to find content related [00:23:20.160] to standards. So, if you're a curriculum [00:23:22.439] director on the line today and you know that [00:23:24.449] you're going to need to pull content based on standard. [00:23:26.719] This may be the best way for you to go. [00:23:28.969] Um, teachers if you prefer to, to [00:23:31.078] organize your class based on standards like this, [00:23:33.160] this might be the place for you to go this way. [00:23:35.358] Um I personally, when I was teaching, [00:23:37.439] I like to organize my content just based on topic. [00:23:39.949] And then at that, once I have all the topics [00:23:42.180] created, then I will, um [00:23:44.150] kind of filter those into my, my standards, [00:23:46.318] but I always preferred to, to [00:23:48.380] find my content related to topic [00:23:50.809] so I can do that by either searching or [00:23:52.868] browsing. So let's start with browsing. [00:23:54.979] So I'm going to click into subjects here [00:23:57.088] at the top. [00:24:01.578] Now, it's going to pull me forward and I can explore [00:24:03.969] different subjects based first on [00:24:06.039] grade level. So you'll see right here. [00:24:08.049] I've got my elementary school, my middle [00:24:10.318] school and then my high school which is broken [00:24:12.469] out just a little bit more because we have a lot of high [00:24:14.500] school resources. [00:24:16.670] So I can click into any of these here. [00:24:19.709] Let's stay with elementary school though. [00:24:23.059] So I can start to narrow down. So I am [00:24:25.338] gonna be teaching science. Let's say I can click into [00:24:27.390] my science section here. [00:24:29.828] And now you'll see, I've got some categories moving [00:24:32.059] forward even from that first category. So [00:24:34.199] you'll see it start, it's organized [00:24:36.750] based on different topics. We have the topics [00:24:39.059] listed here on the left. So you can click directly [00:24:41.328] into them or you can just scroll [00:24:43.358] down on your own and kind of start to explore a little [00:24:45.598] bit. Let's click [00:24:47.650] into one of these though. [00:24:49.900] Let's do soils, rocks and land forms. [00:24:52.239] I was a science teacher and actually really enjoyed [00:24:54.328] teaching about rocks which I know is not [00:24:56.739] normal. But we'll click into that [00:24:59.009] so I can click into this and you'll see some of [00:25:01.130] the different topics that are the most studied [00:25:03.618] and most kind of searched and utilized topics [00:25:06.400] related to elementary school curriculum. [00:25:08.598] So these aren't the only topics [00:25:10.729] related to soils, rocks and landforms [00:25:13.660] within the resource, but these are the most studied. [00:25:15.920] So these are what we've pulled forward for you to see. [00:25:18.608] So if you're clicking through, [00:25:21.209] and maybe you're looking for a specific type of rock [00:25:23.509] as opposed to like the rock cycle and [00:25:25.588] you don't see it here at that point, you run [00:25:27.630] your search and to pull content that way. So these [00:25:29.660] are going to be the most popular basically. [00:25:32.130] But let's click into one, let's click volcanoes [00:25:34.439] who doesn't love a good volcano, right? [00:25:37.299] So when I click into one of these topics, now [00:25:39.759] I'm brought here to a search results [00:25:41.818] page. So just if I were to have run a search, [00:25:44.279] this is bringing me forward that way. You can almost [00:25:46.489] think of this as [00:25:48.559] like an advanced search in a way because [00:25:50.660] you're adding in different filters as you walk [00:25:52.920] through step by step, [00:25:54.680] you'll see here. I have this link. So I'm [00:25:56.699] going to see how I got to this point. So [00:25:58.750] I started off with my elementary school [00:26:00.949] subject. Then I went to science, oil [00:26:03.118] and volcanoes and I can hit back [00:26:05.338] here if I want to go back or my browse [00:26:07.689] button or my back button in the browser here works [00:26:09.828] fine as well. [00:26:11.880] So this is the first way you're going to be able to find [00:26:14.039] and pull content. [00:26:17.719] If you don't want to browse, you actually want to search, [00:26:20.299] we can do that as well. So let's go ahead and search. [00:26:22.630] We'll find a page that's similar to this. [00:26:24.769] But let's [00:26:27.250] do artificial intelligence. I feel like that's everywhere [00:26:29.818] I look, we're, we're hearing about artificial intelligence. [00:26:32.160] So let's go ahead and run our search. [00:26:35.088] Take a quick second just to load here, but [00:26:37.199] we'll be able to see all of the different content we [00:26:39.239] have related to artificial intelligence [00:26:41.719] here. So at the very top, [00:26:43.410] we do pull out all of the different content [00:26:45.739] types. You'll see if we have lesson plans [00:26:48.150] created. They will appear on our search results. [00:26:51.140] We've got videos, academic journals. [00:26:53.729] If you have ebooks related to this specific [00:26:56.229] topic, they'll appear here on the search results [00:26:58.259] page as well. So this ebooks [00:27:00.420] section is going to be specifically [00:27:02.750] full gale ebooks text that you have [00:27:04.848] access to. [00:27:06.799] We've got primary sources, magazines, [00:27:09.209] images, new statistics. You see there's a lot of [00:27:11.250] different content types available [00:27:13.779] and scrolling down here. We do pull all of those different [00:27:15.939] content types out separately in these little [00:27:17.969] buckets here. So if I start to scroll down, [00:27:20.309] you'll see my lesson plans and activities, my [00:27:22.348] reference articles [00:27:25.000] goes on and on. [00:27:27.640] We've got some great filtering options here on this [00:27:29.759] page as well on this right hand side. [00:27:32.009] So I can start to narrow this down even further. [00:27:34.130] Maybe I only want elementary content [00:27:36.199] related to artificial intelligence. I [00:27:38.400] can narrow it down that way. If I want to ensure [00:27:40.719] I'm looking at full text documents, I can do [00:27:42.890] that. the majority of the content [00:27:45.400] in our resources are full text. But [00:27:47.699] every once in a while, there may be just a citation [00:27:51.219] in the resource. So if you're concerned about that, you [00:27:53.439] can slack the full text, I can [00:27:55.469] also narrow it down to peer reviewed journals. So if [00:27:57.529] you're working with more advanced students and you [00:27:59.578] want them to take a look at some more peer reviewed [00:28:01.828] and academic content. You can narrow it down [00:28:03.959] to just seeing that here. [00:28:06.029] Of course, you can also click directly into the academic [00:28:08.500] journal section which is going to pull [00:28:10.509] that content for you as well. [00:28:13.489] But let's just take a look at all of our reference [00:28:15.650] content here. I'm just going to click into reference. [00:28:22.789] When I scroll down here, you'll see a lot of them actually [00:28:25.150] have the same name [00:28:26.939] and a lot of that. A lot of times that's because [00:28:29.009] they're leveled, [00:28:30.299] right? So you'll see this little leveled flag [00:28:32.390] and that means that they are [00:28:35.078] created at two different lexile [00:28:37.229] ranges for your students. [00:28:39.420] Excuse me. And we do include that [00:28:41.509] range here. [00:28:42.900] Another great feature is we tell you which resource [00:28:45.650] this result is found in. [00:28:47.809] And this is really key if you're going to be teaching [00:28:50.078] about a subject that may be, [00:28:52.838] can be viewed from a lot of different lessons that [00:28:55.078] a lot of different lenses. So if we're talking [00:28:57.299] about artificial intelligence gal e [00:28:59.598] in context, opposing viewpoints is going to give us [00:29:01.608] the procon what's going on, you [00:29:03.670] know, currently [00:29:05.250] gel and context literature. Artificial [00:29:07.529] Intelligence might be related to dystopian [00:29:09.930] novels. It might be related to um [00:29:12.439] you know, author is starting [00:29:14.660] to maybe use artificial intelligence a little [00:29:16.729] bit to kind of add oomph to what they're [00:29:18.750] already writing, [00:29:20.670] scrolling down here. We've got gal in context [00:29:23.009] high school, we've got global issues. [00:29:25.380] You may find gale in context [00:29:27.390] science listed here. And it's more pulling [00:29:29.469] the science side of things, how artificial [00:29:32.199] intelligence actually works as [00:29:34.219] opposed to just [00:29:35.890] what's going on in society around artificial [00:29:38.479] intelligence. So we include that right [00:29:40.489] here on the entries. So you know, you're [00:29:42.640] getting the content that you need before you click into [00:29:44.920] it again, we're trying to minimize clicks. [00:29:47.338] So if you know that right now, you need something [00:29:49.799] that's specifically related to science, [00:29:52.318] you're not looking for the procon, you just want [00:29:54.479] students to know how artificial [00:29:56.640] artificial intelligence is getting the content [00:29:59.049] that it has access to. [00:30:01.380] You can really do that here. [00:30:03.920] Let's go, go ahead and scroll down, [00:30:06.209] find an interesting article here. Let's click into [00:30:08.269] this one artificial intelligence [00:30:10.309] and bias. [00:30:12.858] So of course, this is a, a big thing we're [00:30:14.969] trying to get students to know is that while [00:30:17.250] it seems like chat GPt [00:30:19.368] knows all of the answers and has all [00:30:21.559] of the content. [00:30:22.769] Really, it only knows the information [00:30:24.969] that it's being allowed to pull from. So it doesn't [00:30:27.088] pull from every single bit of content [00:30:29.529] in the world. So there's [00:30:31.828] definitely the chance the risk of bias [00:30:34.250] based on the content it's pulling from. So this [00:30:36.380] is a nice article to have. So maybe forward [00:30:38.500] it along to students to kind of pique their interest. A little [00:30:40.588] bit. Now, [00:30:44.059] since I found this article, I want to keep it, I want [00:30:46.229] to share it with my students. [00:30:47.979] I need to save it. [00:30:49.868] And in order to save something on my platform, [00:30:52.500] I have to add it to a folder that's like your, [00:30:54.818] your save button. Basically, it's adding it to a [00:30:56.828] folder. [00:30:58.160] So to do that, [00:30:59.348] I just go into my little bar [00:31:01.430] up top here, my little toolbar and [00:31:03.549] I just hit this, add the folder [00:31:06.660] and I've got a few different options. So [00:31:08.828] I can select my recently used folders. [00:31:11.269] If I want to use one, I've just [00:31:13.279] clicked into previously, [00:31:14.920] I can view all of my folders. I've got a lot [00:31:16.969] of folders here. [00:31:18.769] You most likely won't have this many folders. [00:31:20.858] Hopefully you'll be a little more organized than me. [00:31:23.088] But I can view all my folders or I can create a folder [00:31:25.390] right here. So if I'm starting [00:31:27.640] a new unit, let's say, and I want to have [00:31:29.670] a folder set aside for this unit, I [00:31:31.828] can make one right here. But I'm [00:31:33.930] actually going to use this [00:31:36.019] A folder that I've already [00:31:38.130] created previously. I'm going to select [00:31:40.348] it and add my document [00:31:44.578] and now that this, so it letting us [00:31:46.660] know that it's added, let's close this out though. So [00:31:48.900] now that this is added to a folder, you'll see [00:31:50.920] it has this little blu [00:31:53.459] folder button underneath the title. [00:31:55.689] That's telling me what folder it's in and I can actually [00:31:57.750] click into this folder if I want to. [00:32:00.479] I'm not going to for now. We'll take a look at folders in a second. [00:32:03.219] But this is letting me know that this has been saved. [00:32:05.799] And now that I have this saved on my platform, [00:32:08.078] I can use all of these different tools that [00:32:10.150] I have linked here. So I've got my instructors [00:32:12.500] notes options. So maybe I want [00:32:14.519] to tell my students think of three [00:32:16.630] questions [00:32:21.150] for class tomorrow. [00:32:25.009] I'll just save this. [00:32:31.338] And now if I want to take a look [00:32:33.519] at what this is going to look like for students, [00:32:35.608] because again, this is what you're going [00:32:37.670] to see. You're going to see the stuff that you can [00:32:39.729] edit. Students aren't going to be able to edit. [00:32:42.108] If I want to see what students are going to see [00:32:44.170] now that I've added something to this, I'll [00:32:46.358] go back up to my toolbar and I'm going [00:32:48.380] to hit student view. [00:32:51.630] So if I just decided to share this with [00:32:53.670] my student, take a quick second to load [00:32:55.699] here. There we go. [00:32:56.910] If I decided to share this with my student, [00:32:59.098] this is what they're going to see. They're going to see my note [00:33:01.979] and they're going to see whatever it is. They're not going to [00:33:04.019] see that tool panel that we have access to [00:33:06.049] as educators, they're not going to be able [00:33:08.098] to edit my instructors note like I can do as [00:33:10.199] a teacher, [00:33:11.769] they're just going to see the text and the [00:33:14.000] notes that you wrote for them. [00:33:16.459] If I want to get back to my instructor view to [00:33:18.529] maybe edit this a little bit more, [00:33:20.630] I'll go back up. You'll see. I've got a way [00:33:23.910] fewer tools up here than I do [00:33:25.989] in the instructor view. And I'm just going to hit [00:33:28.009] my instructor view button and that's going to pull me [00:33:30.078] back. [00:33:31.588] Kind of that main luck. [00:33:36.239] Now, in addition to adding instructors notes, [00:33:38.279] there are a few other things that I can do to this [00:33:40.469] piece of text to help my students out. [00:33:42.650] The first one is annotate. [00:33:45.039] So you'll see, I've got an annotations button here [00:33:47.049] in my tools right now. It's empty. [00:33:49.469] What I can do is click and drag over something I think [00:33:51.630] is important. So maybe this paragraph [00:33:54.118] I think is really powerful and I want [00:33:56.189] students to kind of focus in on this, I [00:33:58.229] can click and drag over it. I can highlight it with [00:34:00.318] a color if I want to, [00:34:06.250] I can add a note, I can add a question, [00:34:09.378] whatever I want to do, I'll just hit save [00:34:13.019] and I've got that listed here and you'll see [00:34:15.168] I have when I, [00:34:17.079] when I edit any of this stuff. So my instructors [00:34:19.280] note or my annotation, you'll see [00:34:21.329] I can toggle on and off [00:34:23.478] the visibility for students. So if [00:34:25.519] I don't actually want students to see my annotation [00:34:27.668] right now, [00:34:28.579] I can turn it off and they won't see it. But [00:34:30.699] if I leave it on and now I go back again [00:34:32.809] to my student view to see what this looks like. [00:34:37.739] It's now going to include [00:34:41.510] the annotation I made. So it's still [00:34:43.590] using the same color [00:34:45.019] and you'll see it gives me this little flag guy [00:34:47.070] here and I click into it. It's [00:34:49.458] showing my note [00:34:50.559] and this is kind of a one way street. So this [00:34:53.070] adding instructors note is not the same as [00:34:55.179] adding an assessment. So if you want [00:34:57.219] to ask questions and [00:34:59.260] actually get feedback from your students, [00:35:01.398] you're not going to use these little notes. These [00:35:03.829] are just [00:35:05.000] quick bits of information to point out to students [00:35:07.378] or you know, [00:35:08.820] questions to get them thinking on their own, [00:35:11.050] not expecting a response. [00:35:14.559] Let's go back again to instructor view here. [00:35:21.679] So in addition to annotations, we also [00:35:23.728] have the option to make clippings. [00:35:25.860] I'm not going to go into clippings too much, [00:35:28.019] but just like when I clicked and dragged [00:35:30.110] over a piece of text to annotate, [00:35:32.449] I can do that again, let's say down here [00:35:35.369] and I can click, make a clipping. [00:35:38.628] You see now it's got this little um dashed [00:35:40.918] under underline with this little scissors icon. [00:35:44.219] And what that does is if I keep [00:35:46.449] my clippings on [00:35:48.378] and I share this out with students, all [00:35:50.449] they're going to see is this clip section [00:35:52.570] here. So they won't see the full article, [00:35:54.648] they'll just see this particular paragraph. [00:35:57.329] This is nice if you have like a really [00:35:59.389] long piece of text, a really long article [00:36:01.668] and you don't want students to have to read through it all. [00:36:04.409] You can clip whatever portion you want them [00:36:06.478] to take a look at and send that over to them. [00:36:10.039] But I'm going to keep our main document today. [00:36:12.099] I'm going to delete my clipping [00:36:15.958] and just make it. So all we see is the full document [00:36:18.099] today. So [00:36:20.918] our last kind of editing [00:36:22.969] tool or text manipulation tool that I [00:36:24.978] want to point out to you is going [00:36:27.019] to be our assessment option. You'll see it's listed [00:36:29.260] here in the my tools with this cute little icon. [00:36:33.918] Some documents will already have assessments [00:36:36.110] attached. [00:36:37.699] if they're related to a lesson [00:36:39.889] plan, [00:36:40.989] they will most likely have an assessment attached. [00:36:43.688] If we have already attached something, you're [00:36:45.760] going to see it here. It's going to list the title [00:36:47.898] of the assessment. [00:36:49.320] Of course, not every lesson plan [00:36:51.478] or not, every piece of content in the resource [00:36:53.719] is going to have an assessment because if you think about it, [00:36:55.789] we've got millions of pieces [00:36:57.989] of content, you know, everywhere from magazines [00:37:00.688] to podcasts to primary [00:37:02.809] sources. So [00:37:04.449] it would be impossible for us to add assessments [00:37:06.530] to every piece of content. [00:37:08.320] So we've given you the ability to do that. So [00:37:10.429] if you find a piece of content, even if [00:37:12.510] it's like a video, you find a nice video and you want [00:37:14.599] to assess your students understanding of that video, [00:37:17.510] you'll be able to use this blue a assessment [00:37:20.030] button. So when [00:37:22.090] I click into this, now it pulls me forward to [00:37:24.208] this kind of separate page, [00:37:26.260] this assessment authoring page. [00:37:28.570] When I, what I want to show you first is you'll see [00:37:30.708] I'm finding an assessment for [00:37:32.918] and this is the title of the article I'm in. [00:37:35.769] So this is gonna let you know, hey, whatever [00:37:37.800] you find whatever you create, you're [00:37:40.128] going to be attaching it to artificial [00:37:42.219] intelligence and bias the article that you're currently [00:37:44.570] in, which is cool. Great. [00:37:46.590] We're gonna leave that there because we're gonna do that [00:37:48.539] in the middle of the page here. You'll see. I've got two options. [00:37:51.030] I can find premade assessments [00:37:53.409] or I can create my own. So let's [00:37:55.579] first start off and see what finding an assessment [00:37:57.739] is going to look like. [00:38:01.530] So I've got a few options here [00:38:03.599] in this created by section. [00:38:06.079] So we have created by me. So [00:38:08.280] as you would expect if you made something, [00:38:10.489] you'll be able to see that piece of content, [00:38:13.039] I've got created by my school. [00:38:15.119] What that means is anyone who uses [00:38:17.260] your school's instance or your [00:38:19.360] school's accounts when they create [00:38:21.789] and publish an assessment, [00:38:24.610] you're going to be able to see that as well. [00:38:26.719] So if your colleague who also teaches [00:38:30.519] um African American studies, [00:38:32.590] created [00:38:34.648] a quiz related to, you know, unit two. [00:38:37.159] You'll be able to see that listed here and you can [00:38:39.320] use that quiz too. You can attach that [00:38:41.389] piece of content [00:38:42.898] to whatever article you're using [00:38:45.489] or as you'll see in a little bit, you can actually [00:38:47.978] attach an assessment to a folder as well. [00:38:49.989] If you wanna share a folder with students, [00:38:52.510] we'll get to that later. [00:38:53.688] and you also have the option to click and view [00:38:56.219] the assessments that were pre created by Gale. [00:38:58.918] So we do have a full set of assessments that have [00:39:00.949] already been created. I will say the [00:39:02.978] assessments created by Gale. A lot of them are [00:39:05.050] very specific to [00:39:07.378] individual pieces of content. So [00:39:09.639] like they'll ask a question that's [00:39:11.938] specifically answered in an article [00:39:14.530] or in a newspaper. [00:39:16.590] So those may be a little bit more specific [00:39:18.918] but might still come in handy. I [00:39:21.300] recommend if you just kind of browsing through [00:39:23.478] everything that's available to leave it at all [00:39:25.878] if you know, it's something that you may [00:39:27.769] click into me. But um I like to keep [00:39:30.019] it on all just to see what I have available [00:39:32.320] here. So [00:39:34.679] scrolling down, you'll see ta ta [00:39:36.719] ta ta. Some of these [00:39:38.840] have these little green checks here [00:39:41.280] that means these are published and I can [00:39:43.639] attach them to a document. [00:39:46.148] If you decide to make your own assessment, [00:39:48.918] you have to publish it. You'll see this one [00:39:50.949] was made by me, [00:39:53.478] I may have made it specifically for our lesson [00:39:55.789] today. But this one was made by me and [00:39:57.829] you'll see, I haven't published it yet. So it's got this [00:39:59.849] little red circle next [00:40:02.039] to it. So I can take a look at this, [00:40:04.188] but I won't be able to add it to [00:40:06.918] um to my lesson at all. [00:40:11.429] But I can click into any of these. Let's click into something [00:40:13.590] that was already created and already [00:40:15.628] published. So let's click into this one [00:40:18.530] cybersecurity. [00:40:22.849] So you'll see, it gives me a little note [00:40:25.000] here that this is read only because it's already [00:40:27.119] been published. So anytime [00:40:29.139] you or your colleagues make an assessment [00:40:31.469] and you publish it once it's been [00:40:33.519] published, you can no longer [00:40:35.639] edit it. So make sure that you have your [00:40:38.260] your assessment completely [00:40:40.418] created before you publish it, you can [00:40:42.599] create an assessment and save it for later. You'll [00:40:44.728] see. I've got either I've [00:40:46.760] got a save button listed here. So that [00:40:48.829] will keep it unpublished and allow you to [00:40:50.938] make edits. [00:40:53.519] If you do have a [00:40:55.208] an assessment that you really like, but it's published [00:40:57.398] and you can't edit it, you can make yourself [00:40:59.519] a duplicate. So you get your own version [00:41:01.760] and at that point, you can edit it. So [00:41:03.869] it's going to be, it's going to be have the same starting [00:41:06.000] point, but then you'll be able to make your changes. [00:41:09.668] So if I wanna take a look at this quiz to see if it is [00:41:11.780] actually something I want to save. [00:41:14.489] You. See, I have two options. I can view it as [00:41:16.579] a player, which is what students are going [00:41:18.688] to see or I can view it as a list. [00:41:20.929] So if I click list, it's really [00:41:23.000] just going to list all of those questions out for me. [00:41:27.090] If I do decide to view it as a player, ill need [00:41:29.168] to hit my blue start button [00:41:32.208] and I'm going to see what students see. [00:41:36.099] Oh, I didn't answer it. That's my my fault. [00:41:38.250] You need to answer them um before [00:41:40.530] you can click through. Um But [00:41:42.639] viewing it as a player comes in really [00:41:44.760] handy, if you start to have questions that have [00:41:47.360] graphs attached to them or that have [00:41:49.840] videos linked to them, it's going to [00:41:51.869] be a little bit easier to understand what that looks like. [00:41:54.010] Viewing it in player mode. But [00:41:56.128] if your questions are all, [00:41:58.489] you know, multiple choice, true or false, maybe [00:42:00.728] a few short answers. It may be easier [00:42:02.878] just to scroll through the list. [00:42:04.659] You can take a look that way, [00:42:09.590] but I can go back here and I've oops, [00:42:12.250] I clicked back all the way past [00:42:14.619] what I was looking at. [00:42:15.809] Um So if I want [00:42:17.829] to, if I like this resource, I want to add it to that [00:42:19.989] document. I've been working on here. [00:42:22.188] I will have the ability in a quick second [00:42:24.340] to hit this blue add to resource [00:42:26.949] and that's automatically going to link this [00:42:28.978] assessment to the resource. [00:42:35.550] There we go. [00:42:36.659] Oops, [00:42:41.289] here we go. My computer decided [00:42:43.320] to go a little bit wonky. [00:42:44.739] Um So let's say I do like [00:42:46.820] this quiz. I want students to take it. I'll [00:42:48.989] just hit my blue add to resource [00:42:53.148] and it's letting me know it's adding to this resource [00:42:55.478] because I accessed my assessment [00:42:57.760] section through that resource [00:43:00.489] and I say, yep cool. Add [00:43:02.639] to resource [00:43:06.059] all done. It lets me know that it's ready [00:43:08.139] to go. But let's say [00:43:10.360] I didn't find what I wanted to when [00:43:12.599] I kind of ran through and searched here. [00:43:16.340] So I looked at all of this and I'm like this is just not [00:43:18.958] not doing it for me. This is not asking the questions [00:43:21.329] that I think need to be asked. [00:43:23.019] I can actually go in and create an assessment instead. [00:43:25.530] So you'll see. I've got this blue button up top [00:43:27.610] here. I hit create [00:43:29.769] assessment. [00:43:31.668] It's going to ask you to title [00:43:33.938] the assessment. [00:43:39.449] And I always recommend anytime you make a change, [00:43:41.539] just save it. [00:43:42.978] I can't tell you how many times I forget to [00:43:44.989] save things. So when you make [00:43:47.320] anything, just save it. [00:43:49.250] Now that I have the title here, I can choose [00:43:51.378] to find questions that have been made [00:43:53.708] already on the platform. So just [00:43:55.820] like you can find assessments, you can find individual [00:43:58.179] questions so I can do that here [00:44:00.320] or I can create an item. So let's create [00:44:02.478] an item here. [00:44:05.989] So now we're going to title this specific [00:44:08.059] question. [00:44:10.550] So [00:44:18.019] what are your thoughts about using A I for homework? [00:44:21.429] So that's my title. Now, I'm going to hit add [00:44:23.688] new and [00:44:26.668] this is where I'm going to be able to choose what [00:44:29.070] type of question I want to ask here. [00:44:31.639] So you'll see it starts off kind of basic with [00:44:33.659] our multiple choice, true or false [00:44:36.208] and it gets a little bit [00:44:37.659] more detailed. So if I click into [00:44:39.679] say written and recorded, I can [00:44:41.829] have them write out an essay, I [00:44:44.019] can upload a video. [00:44:45.728] OK? Or I can have them upload a video [00:44:47.989] to respond to me. So maybe [00:44:50.478] instead of having them write an essay, I want them [00:44:52.510] to record themselves, [00:44:54.889] answering me verbally or record themselves. [00:44:57.579] Um you know, [00:44:58.978] visually, it's a [00:45:01.030] to [00:45:02.228] enter that instead of the text, they'll be [00:45:04.260] able to do that. You'll see again, we've got [00:45:06.898] graphing, we've got charts, we've [00:45:09.010] got chemistry We've got a full [00:45:11.179] other section, but let's go. [00:45:14.030] This question is kind of open ended. So let's [00:45:16.250] go ahead and choose an essay. [00:45:19.360] So I hit my plus button [00:45:22.449] that's going to pull this here. [00:45:24.159] So this is the stem, this is what your [00:45:26.289] actual, your students are going to see. [00:45:34.860] So you use a I to do your homework, why or why [00:45:36.958] not? And [00:45:39.849] all these are not the best, most thought provoking questions [00:45:42.219] of all time. Yours will be much better. [00:45:44.550] But so I can type that in. You'll see [00:45:46.559] this is using rich text. So I have [00:45:48.800] some different formatting options here. If I want to [00:45:50.840] bold certain things or italicize them, [00:45:53.250] I can do that [00:45:56.110] and then you'll see here. I can add a word limit. [00:45:58.389] So this word limit is 10,000 [00:46:01.929] underneath under my more options. This [00:46:04.208] is showing me if I want them to have a max [00:46:06.458] score, I have that here. I can [00:46:08.478] change just more specific layouts [00:46:10.659] and things like that. [00:46:13.179] Once I have it all set, [00:46:14.599] I can hit save. [00:46:18.099] Now this is all saved. Ready to go. I'm gonna [00:46:20.239] hit my back button to get back to my assessment. [00:46:26.179] There we go. So now I'm on my assessment, I've [00:46:28.619] got the question that I want to ask and [00:46:30.949] I can keep going. I can add as many questions as I [00:46:32.969] want. Um Of course, we suggest using [00:46:35.039] this more as a, a formative assessment [00:46:37.378] type. So, [00:46:38.349] it's usually better to keep it around five [00:46:40.688] or so, maybe less, you know, for this one, I might [00:46:42.800] just ask this one question and that's my assessment. [00:46:45.688] But it's up to you. You can use as many as you like, [00:46:48.780] but I've got this all done. I'm just going to hit save just [00:46:50.909] for funsies to make sure it is always saved. [00:46:53.938] Now, if I want to add this to my document [00:46:56.039] right now. I can't because it's not published. [00:46:58.449] It's basically a draft, [00:47:01.570] but I am good to go. I like this. I want [00:47:03.639] to attach it. I am going to hit publish assessment [00:47:05.668] right up top here [00:47:09.458] and it's reminding you that a published assessment [00:47:11.750] can't be changed anymore. So it's completely locked [00:47:14.559] and it's searchable at [00:47:16.500] by other educators. So your colleagues [00:47:18.668] will be able to see and use this [00:47:20.938] this assessment if they want to [00:47:23.079] for their classes. [00:47:26.019] So let's do it. I like it. We're gonna publish [00:47:28.289] it. And [00:47:32.938] once it's fully published, you'll be able to have [00:47:35.119] it attached to your [00:47:37.269] content here. There we go. So it's [00:47:39.329] published and you will need to hit [00:47:41.398] add to resource now. So publishing, it doesn't [00:47:43.750] automatically attach it. You just need to hit your [00:47:45.840] add to resource button [00:47:48.449] and yep, I still wanted to attach to that resource. [00:47:51.159] So I'll go ahead and add it. [00:47:54.349] So now I'm set now. I want to go back [00:47:56.369] to my document to take a look at how this [00:47:58.510] is gonna work for students. So I'll click [00:48:00.659] back into artificial intelligence [00:48:02.679] and bias because remember that's the document we've [00:48:04.699] been working on [00:48:13.309] now. You'll see. I have both of my assessments [00:48:15.628] right here. The defaults to being [00:48:17.949] visible to your students. [00:48:19.769] So if we click on the student view again, to see what [00:48:21.820] they're gonna see, [00:48:24.829] they'll appear at the top here, [00:48:27.090] right by our instructors note you'll see [00:48:29.148] assessments listed here. It's going to tell them [00:48:31.188] that it's not started. I'm not able [00:48:33.260] to click into it because I'm not a student. But students [00:48:35.300] will be able to click in and finish [00:48:37.519] these up. Once they're done, it'll say [00:48:39.599] done or it'll say in progress if they're still [00:48:41.708] working on them, [00:48:44.139] let's go back again to instructor view [00:48:47.148] and I can't toggle these on and off. So if [00:48:49.289] I only want them to answer [00:48:52.469] the first one right here, I can turn this [00:48:54.599] one off [00:48:55.860] and they won't see it, [00:48:57.989] but we keep it on. [00:48:59.969] Now. I have a few different options if I want [00:49:02.090] to share this with students. So if I [00:49:04.099] only want students to see this particular [00:49:06.478] piece of content, I don't have anything [00:49:08.639] else for them right now. I can choose just [00:49:10.769] to send this out to them. I can do [00:49:12.840] that by hitting, send to this little paper, airplane [00:49:15.139] guy and [00:49:17.519] then I'll hit get shareable student link. [00:49:21.179] This is a really nice feature. I can [00:49:23.250] actually make different links for your different classes. [00:49:25.929] So when your students answer those assessment questions, [00:49:28.869] they'll be organized for you. So [00:49:31.070] you'll see, I've got like first hour, second hour, [00:49:33.418] I've got environmental studies and social studies. [00:49:35.628] These were all pre I premade [00:49:37.659] them. You're automatically just going to start [00:49:39.760] with one that's called class number one. [00:49:42.898] But you can make as many as you want to. You just [00:49:44.958] copy the link and send it to whichever students [00:49:47.079] need each individual link. So, [00:49:49.458] um you know, your second hour is going to be the only ones [00:49:51.679] to get this link while you're gonna want this one for your first [00:49:53.849] hour. So that's how we organize [00:49:56.079] all of the student responses that you're going to [00:49:58.090] see once students complete their assessments. [00:50:04.469] Now, if you wanted to share out a whole [00:50:06.739] content set, let's say you've built [00:50:08.760] out a full folder for your students. And instead of sharing, [00:50:11.239] you know, each article individually, you [00:50:13.409] just want them to see that [00:50:15.050] we can do that using our folders, which [00:50:17.119] are in my class resources. [00:50:19.510] So I'm going to click on my little person here. [00:50:23.389] And the first option you'll see is my class resources [00:50:30.070] and I've got all of my folders here. You'll [00:50:32.409] see. I can create a new folder up top [00:50:34.570] here. I can choose different folders to [00:50:36.590] collaborate. I can choose different folders [00:50:38.739] to send or I can do that [00:50:41.449] while I'm actually in the folder. So that's [00:50:43.510] what I'm going to do. This A I folder is [00:50:45.550] the one that I've been working on that. I just added that [00:50:47.570] new document to. [00:50:50.829] So clicking into this folder here, I have [00:50:52.929] quite a bit of modification that I can kind of do [00:50:55.050] here. I can edit the title [00:50:57.458] in the description [00:50:58.688] so I can add a description if this is going [00:51:00.840] to students, it might say read you know [00:51:03.000] this article and answer the assessment [00:51:05.458] questions. [00:51:06.418] I'll be able to put that here, just gonna leave [00:51:08.639] it there for now [00:51:10.478] and then towards the middle, you're going to see all of the content [00:51:12.648] that I've added and I actually added a bit [00:51:14.750] of content before we started our session [00:51:16.829] today, which is why you're seeing more than just this [00:51:19.188] one article that I added. [00:51:21.728] And you see, you can actually toggle things on [00:51:23.750] and off. So maybe you want your students to just [00:51:26.039] read these bottom [00:51:28.458] few, you can turn off these top [00:51:30.599] ones and they won't see them and then you can toggle them back [00:51:32.739] on whenever you wanna share them [00:51:34.769] with your students. [00:51:36.280] You can also add tags. So [00:51:38.309] maybe this is gonna be homework. [00:51:40.349] We wanna add that tag. Do [00:51:42.010] you want to let them know that? Let's say this is [00:51:44.148] a video [00:51:46.030] you can let them know now that's tagged [00:51:48.708] you'll see on this left hand side, your tags are going to [00:51:50.728] appear here for students as well. So [00:51:52.898] this is just a nice level of organization [00:51:56.289] and I will mention you can add lesson plans [00:51:58.489] to folders. So if you're planning on saving a lesson [00:52:00.559] plan, you're gonna want to put it in a folder [00:52:02.708] and lesson plans will never be visible [00:52:04.840] to students. So even if this [00:52:06.978] is a student folder that you've created and [00:52:09.159] you saved a lesson plan in here as well, just so [00:52:11.239] you can keep everything in one spot. When [00:52:13.438] you share your folder, they will just see [00:52:15.519] what you have toggled on a lesson plan [00:52:17.688] will never be visible to them. [00:52:19.449] We have it kind of set to where [00:52:21.699] if the document type is listed as lesson [00:52:23.820] plan, we automatically know that students [00:52:26.208] cannot see that there's no student version, [00:52:28.789] it's not going to appear for them. [00:52:32.280] So we can also add some different pieces of content [00:52:34.708] to a folder here as well. You see, I've got my little [00:52:36.829] green a button so I can actually [00:52:39.469] add an assessment to a folder as opposed [00:52:41.708] to a piece of content. So just like we [00:52:43.820] went through on our document, we [00:52:45.878] attached an assessment, we can do that same [00:52:48.489] kind of workflow and add it to [00:52:50.699] a folder as a whole. [00:52:52.750] I can also upload different files. So if you [00:52:54.769] have maybe a slide deck, you want students to have, [00:52:57.619] if you have a URL, you want them to go to a specific [00:53:00.050] page, you can do that here as well or [00:53:02.260] you can add sub folders. So if you want another [00:53:04.500] layer of organization, you can add a folder [00:53:06.699] within this folder. [00:53:08.820] We're getting low on time. So we're not gonna do that today, but [00:53:10.878] I recommend taking a look. [00:53:12.789] You can take a look at the student view here [00:53:14.898] just like if you were on a document [00:53:16.929] and this is what your students are going to see. [00:53:21.978] Let's get back here to my instructor view. [00:53:24.688] If you want to share a folder with students, [00:53:27.010] you're going to use the same process as you did with [00:53:29.168] that document. So you'll hit send to, [00:53:32.469] you'll hit get shareable student link [00:53:36.369] and you'll again make as [00:53:38.398] many [00:53:39.269] links as you need [00:53:41.369] for your students. [00:53:44.860] Now, if you want to collaborate with your peers, as [00:53:46.889] opposed to just sending this to students, [00:53:49.340] you can use the collaborate button right here. [00:53:52.228] So still in the toolbar right next to the student [00:53:54.289] view, you have two options [00:53:56.449] for collaboration. You can share a copy [00:53:58.648] where it's going to be [00:54:00.539] them having their own version, they can edit their [00:54:02.929] folder, they won't be able to edit yours [00:54:05.409] or you can work together, [00:54:07.148] which is going to kind of have one [00:54:09.378] folder where you're both linked [00:54:11.458] to. So if you decide to add a document, [00:54:13.628] that person will see the document. If they [00:54:15.679] add a document, you'll see that change. [00:54:18.610] So it really depends on how you're planning on using a folder. [00:54:21.250] If you're going to be sharing it out, let's say to [00:54:23.739] you know, your curriculum director director and [00:54:25.769] you're sending this out to your entire el A department, [00:54:28.898] You might not want your copy to be [00:54:31.639] edited, you might just want it to kind of be static [00:54:33.869] for them. So you're going to send them a copy. [00:54:36.309] If [00:54:37.369] you're, you know a department head and you want to [00:54:39.418] kind of work collaborative, collaboratively with [00:54:41.559] all of your teachers, all of your colleagues, you [00:54:43.619] might want to use a work together option. [00:54:49.239] And I've got one more feature that we're going to take [00:54:51.458] a look at before we end up our session today. [00:54:54.079] and that's going to be our assessment results. [00:54:56.708] So after you've done every step, we just [00:54:58.878] went through, you assigned assessments, [00:55:01.269] either on a document or you assigned them in a folder. [00:55:03.958] Once students start to respond, you're [00:55:06.010] going to find those responses still [00:55:08.139] in your my class resources. [00:55:11.030] So I'm gonna jump back just using my R crumb trail [00:55:13.320] up top here to my class resources. [00:55:18.168] And now you'll see in my assignments button is listed [00:55:20.239] here, this little blue button again [00:55:22.269] with the little assessment icon. [00:55:24.590] Now clicking into this, you'll see. I've assigned [00:55:26.878] a few different assessments here. [00:55:29.760] So as you assign them, they'll appear here, [00:55:31.898] I can click into any of these to see results. [00:55:33.969] So let's click into this one because I know [00:55:36.039] I've had a few responses. [00:55:38.958] There we go. So we'll see my grades. We'll see all of [00:55:41.019] my students for this. I only [00:55:43.239] shared one link. So my first [00:55:45.250] hour link, if I were to have shared more [00:55:47.418] than one link, they would all appear here, [00:55:49.590] kind of separated out into little charts. [00:55:53.079] So I see the very basics. You see anything [00:55:55.289] that's gray here is not scored. [00:55:57.679] So things like multiple choice, [00:55:59.840] true or false are going to be scored automatically, [00:56:02.309] things like essays or videos [00:56:04.898] are not going to be scored automatically. You'll need to come [00:56:07.050] in and take a look at them. [00:56:09.510] So we can see our grades here. [00:56:11.898] I can go into scoring and feedback [00:56:14.260] to take a closer look [00:56:18.360] and I can click into any of my students here. [00:56:22.849] And if they are already graded for me, I'm [00:56:24.909] going to see what they got correct. [00:56:28.139] You'll see item five here. The reason it wasn't automatically [00:56:30.489] graded is because it's a short answer [00:56:32.889] or I think this is an essay because it's 10,000 questions. [00:56:35.530] Um 10,000 word limit. [00:56:38.300] So I have to take a look at this. You'll [00:56:40.500] see, obviously, the student didn't do a great [00:56:42.769] job. So my feedback, [00:56:44.849] I might need to say, you know, please follow up with [00:56:46.969] me [00:56:50.059] something like that. And then here I can [00:56:52.208] add in her score. So she didn't [00:56:54.250] answer it. So she's gonna get a zero and then [00:56:56.349] I'll hit save. [00:57:02.269] So now that's been added here as well. [00:57:04.728] You'll see. Now item five is showing my [00:57:06.739] response and showing that she did get [00:57:09.000] a zero out of three for this question. [00:57:14.458] And if I [00:57:15.760] click into another student here [00:57:18.619] that received partial credit for [00:57:22.418] her response just because she responded, [00:57:25.119] you'll see, it gives me this little yellow circle. [00:57:27.668] So I know that it's not 100% but it's also [00:57:29.898] not zero. They got partial credit for this [00:57:35.760] and I can jump back to grades here as [00:57:37.829] needed [00:57:39.039] and take a look again if I need just this quick look, [00:57:41.139] I have this here. I can also download [00:57:43.228] my scores now. So if I want to save [00:57:45.309] these scores somewhere else, [00:57:47.110] I'll be able to do that just by downloading it does download [00:57:49.438] as a spreadsheet. [00:57:50.708] So you'll be able to, to download right there. [00:57:54.010] And when students click into the link, it's actually [00:57:56.139] going to recognize them based on [00:57:58.559] their Google or the Microsoft [00:58:00.769] account, whatever student account they use. So if it's Google [00:58:02.918] or Microsoft, it's going to recognize [00:58:04.978] them and it's going to auto populate their names [00:58:07.070] for it for them and for you. So you [00:58:09.079] won't need to worry about [00:58:11.019] them, you know, creating user name, creating a password [00:58:13.329] and trying to remember the user name and the password just [00:58:15.769] like you sign in with your Google or your Microsoft [00:58:18.000] account. So do students. [00:58:22.750] Now, we've gone through a lot [00:58:25.039] and I know we've gone through a lot. So before [00:58:27.458] I switch over to show you some contact information, [00:58:30.099] so you can kind of keep moving forward with your [00:58:32.168] learning. Are there any questions [00:58:34.228] anything you want me to jump back into quickly [00:58:36.550] or elaborate on? [00:58:41.969] Ok. So let me jump back then [00:58:44.909] if you think of something while I'm going through this, [00:58:47.019] just put it in the Q and A and I'll be able to, to [00:58:49.340] jump back. [00:58:51.909] So now that we've been through all of this together. [00:58:54.360] If you have additional questions or maybe [00:58:56.570] you want to talk about how you can really [00:58:58.579] leverage this for your learning community. That way you can reach out [00:59:46.059] and talk about gale in context for educators, all that [00:59:48.079] good stuff. [00:59:49.918] If you need additional training information [00:59:52.099] or maybe you want to dive a little [00:59:54.250] bit deeper about into, let's [00:59:56.329] say assessments, you know, we kind of just briefly skimmed [00:59:58.708] over them if you want to learn more.
