[00:00:05.469] Hello, everyone and welcome to our Gale [00:00:07.618] 101 session. Today we're talking about [00:00:09.898] Gale In Context: High School. My [00:00:11.989] name is Amber Winters and I am a senior training [00:00:14.358] consultant here with Gale [00:00:16.539] and I'm excited to be working with you all today. [00:00:20.170] So a quick agenda here. First, we're going to just [00:00:22.208] go over what the resource itself is, [00:00:24.399] what you can expect to find some [00:00:26.589] of the different features available. Then [00:00:28.649] we'll talk about some of the key content you're going [00:00:30.760] to see specifically the key content [00:00:32.810] types. So things like biographies. [00:00:35.298] we'll go over all of the good stuff you're going to find, [00:00:37.959] but we'll spend the majority of the time actually [00:00:40.020] walking through the resource so we can kind of get [00:00:42.098] a feel of what your users are going to [00:00:44.118] be experiencing. So some of the workflows [00:00:46.179] that might be beneficial for them. We'll take [00:00:48.298] a look at filtering, we'll take a look at topic pages. [00:00:50.848] We're going to try to hit everything we can in the resource [00:00:53.179] today with our 30 minutes [00:00:55.020] and then at the very end of the session, we should have [00:00:57.130] some time for any questions you have [00:00:59.179] that I wasn't able to hit as [00:01:01.189] we move along the session and I do have some contact [00:01:03.478] information for you as well. [00:01:05.540] But again, if you do have questions, don't feel like [00:01:07.569] you need to wait until the very end of the session, I [00:01:09.698] would love to answer them for you as they come up. [00:01:11.808] So feel free when you think of them to put [00:01:13.918] them into that Q and A and I'll be able to get those answered. [00:01:18.558] So, Galen context high school, now this [00:01:20.599] is an age appropriate resource that we've developed [00:01:22.980] specifically for high schoolers as you [00:01:25.028] would expect from the title. [00:01:27.790] Um And it is developed though from beginner [00:01:30.019] to advanced high school level students. [00:01:32.588] So those in ninth grade who are just starting [00:01:34.879] to kind of dig into that higher level content [00:01:37.290] all the way up to 12th graders who are actually [00:01:39.379] getting into academic works and kind of starting [00:01:41.609] to explore academic journals, every [00:01:44.299] level between that they're going to find [00:01:46.418] content here within this resource. [00:01:49.109] And this is a very broad resource. It is [00:01:51.239] cross curricular. So you'll find things [00:01:53.730] related to el A to social studies, [00:01:55.769] current events, science, social [00:01:57.900] emotional learning. We've got great [00:01:59.969] financial literacy information. [00:02:02.049] The list goes on and on. You'll find all of that [00:02:04.088] right here in this resource. So it is really [00:02:06.939] kind of um [00:02:08.127] far reaching resource. And if [00:02:10.139] you're on the line as a librarian who's planning [00:02:12.389] on getting this information out to your teachers. [00:02:14.588] Just know that this resource is probably [00:02:16.768] going to cover the majority of your school. [00:02:18.889] So definitely I recommend getting this out to [00:02:20.957] everyone that you can because they'll find content [00:02:23.479] here in the resource. [00:02:25.969] And in addition to all that great coverage, [00:02:28.038] we have, we also have a lot of built in tools [00:02:30.258] here that are going to support your learners. [00:02:32.409] So things like highlights and notes, if [00:02:34.429] your users kind of want to talk to the text [00:02:36.439] as they're reading, we have translation [00:02:38.618] capabilities, both the documents themselves [00:02:41.229] in the platform. So all of the tools can [00:02:43.399] be translated. We have a read speaker, [00:02:46.199] text manipulation. It's going to allow your users [00:02:48.270] to change the font, the color, the size, [00:02:50.710] great citation tool. We're also integrated [00:02:53.028] with both Google and Microsoft drives [00:02:55.169] if they want to save content that way and [00:02:57.419] also with Google classroom. So if you are [00:02:59.550] using Google Classroom for your classes, you [00:03:01.719] can actually send information directly from [00:03:03.778] our resource to your Google classroom [00:03:06.118] platform, which is a really nice feature to have. [00:03:10.689] So let's talk a little bit about some of the key [00:03:12.919] content types that we're going to see as we click [00:03:15.088] through the resource today. So the first probably [00:03:17.689] the most expected is going to be our reference [00:03:19.960] articles. So that's giving us just the [00:03:21.990] fact about the facts about whatever we're [00:03:24.110] learning about. We have basic reference articles [00:03:26.758] that are going to provide the foundation [00:03:29.409] for further learning. And we also have [00:03:31.558] some more advanced reference articles that are really getting [00:03:33.838] into specifics about a topic and [00:03:35.868] really kind of specializing into one [00:03:38.319] hyper focused topic. [00:03:41.118] We also have a giant collection of news and [00:03:43.149] magazines and many of them are loaded daily, [00:03:45.349] of course, depending on how often they're published. [00:03:48.520] But again, these are cross curricular and [00:03:50.750] they're going to really link the real [00:03:52.889] world to what they're learning in the classroom. [00:03:55.469] So this is giving that current events [00:03:57.649] look, it's going to help your, you your students [00:04:00.229] or your library patrons coming in [00:04:02.500] kind of understand why they're learning [00:04:04.538] what they're learning. [00:04:06.939] We also have multimedia content from within [00:04:09.149] this resource. And of course, this is going to be really [00:04:11.159] handy for your users who may be struggling [00:04:13.649] readers or just for those who prefer [00:04:16.048] to watch their [00:04:18.199] information as opposed to reading it. [00:04:20.259] They'll find videos, they'll find great [00:04:22.449] images. We also have a huge collection [00:04:24.509] of audio files, specifically podcasts. [00:04:26.838] I like to point out because of course, podcasts are usually [00:04:29.069] fairly short [00:04:30.670] and a little bit easier to hold on to than, [00:04:33.738] you know, a longer news broadcast or something [00:04:35.988] like that. So we do have a lot of podcasts as [00:04:38.088] well. Again, cross curricular. So they'll find [00:04:40.329] information on quite a few different [00:04:42.488] topics and subjects. They'll find that [00:04:44.579] right here within the resource. [00:04:47.928] We also have a pretty large collection of [00:04:49.939] biographies. I say large for all of these collections [00:04:52.389] because we do, we have a, a [00:04:54.259] very, very huge collection [00:04:56.399] of materials. But our biographies are really great because [00:04:58.600] they include both historical figures [00:05:00.730] and contemporary figures. And I think that's [00:05:02.829] a really vital parts of [00:05:05.100] a research database of a learning resource. [00:05:07.209] Like this [00:05:08.209] is a lot of times your users want to see [00:05:10.338] themselves reflected in biographies [00:05:12.399] and they want to learn about the people who are big [00:05:14.608] deals right now. You know, they want to learn about the [00:05:16.619] musicians, they're listening to [00:05:18.459] you see, I pulled for lebron James, [00:05:20.639] you know, they want to learn about the athletes they're watching. [00:05:23.480] So they'll find all of that content here. Of [00:05:25.500] course, in addition to the historical figures that you [00:05:27.540] would expect to see within the resource, [00:05:31.040] we also have a collection of primary sources, [00:05:33.170] both for us history and world history. [00:05:35.838] So if you do need your users starting [00:05:38.149] to kind of get into that and understand the difference [00:05:40.278] between primary and secondary sources, [00:05:42.519] they'll find content for that. They'll see things [00:05:44.838] like political cartoons, speeches, [00:05:47.548] letters, [00:05:48.750] manuscripts, courts, [00:05:51.309] you know, summaries. So really [00:05:53.410] kind of a full [00:05:55.449] holistic big view of history in [00:05:57.480] our primary sources. And they are [00:05:59.600] labeled as primary sources in the resource, [00:06:01.750] which I think is really beneficial for [00:06:04.059] students who may struggle to understand [00:06:06.790] the difference between a primary and a secondary [00:06:08.819] source, we've labeled them as primary sources [00:06:11.048] so we can help guide them before they can kind of figure [00:06:13.250] it out on their own. We want to give them that little [00:06:15.269] leg up and label it for them. [00:06:18.569] And finally, this is unique to Gale In [00:06:20.959] Context: High School, as opposed to the other [00:06:23.230] In Context resources like Gale [00:06:25.399] in context middle school, we start to include [00:06:27.778] academic journals here. So again, your 12th [00:06:30.119] graders who are getting ready to you [00:06:32.428] know, jump into college, jump into university [00:06:34.899] and they're starting to look at that more [00:06:37.199] detailed more complex [00:06:39.238] information. They'll find that in this resource. [00:06:42.588] And what's great is all of our academic journals are [00:06:44.629] actually labeled as peer reviewed. [00:06:46.910] So if you want to make sure your users [00:06:49.170] are accessing peer-reviewed content [00:06:51.220] and they're not quite sure when they [00:06:53.269] click on something, it will let them know it'll get a little [00:06:55.470] checkmark saying it's peer reviewed. So they'll be [00:06:57.500] able to see that. [00:06:59.428] And another great feature of having these academic [00:07:01.619] journals right here on this platform is if [00:07:03.720] they decide to click into an academic journal [00:07:05.809] and they just, you know, get completely overwhelmed, his [00:07:07.980] information is too in depth, it's too advanced [00:07:10.220] for them. They can really simply just back [00:07:12.338] out of that article and find maybe a reference [00:07:14.619] article about the same topic, but [00:07:16.689] just at that lower level. So [00:07:19.338] they can like dip their toes into the academic field. [00:07:21.699] They don't have to go to a fully academic [00:07:24.238] support a fully [00:07:27.100] academic resource. Um They [00:07:29.329] can just kind of dig in here and they'll get both the academic [00:07:31.649] side of things and the lower level resource [00:07:33.858] reference content. [00:07:38.350] Now, I just want to spend the rest of our time looking [00:07:40.488] at the resource here. Are there any questions [00:07:42.778] quickly about the content types that [00:07:44.949] you are going to be available or [00:07:47.509] the tools that I briefly mentioned anything like that? [00:07:53.019] OK. [00:07:54.459] I don't see any. So let's go ahead and jump [00:07:56.769] here. It's almost timed out. [00:07:58.869] So let's go ahead and jump right to the home page [00:08:00.920] of Galen context High School. This is what your [00:08:02.949] users are going to see as soon as they sign [00:08:05.059] in. So just a little lay of the land [00:08:07.309] here, of course, you'll see our advanced search and [00:08:09.428] our basic search are going to be right at the top here [00:08:11.678] in our banner. [00:08:13.988] We have a lot of really great content. [00:08:16.079] If we scroll down, that's going to be beneficial for [00:08:18.199] users as well. First, we have some topics [00:08:20.338] of interest that we like to pull out and these usually [00:08:22.449] change monthly. Anyone watching [00:08:24.639] the recording this month, This is being recorded [00:08:27.069] in April. So you see, we've pulled forward Arab American [00:08:29.730] Heritage Month, [00:08:31.199] we can click through, we have environmentalism pulled [00:08:33.340] forward and track and field [00:08:35.279] this month. So they do change monthly [00:08:37.340] sometimes sooner if something you know, big [00:08:39.359] happens in the world and we want to highlight that for [00:08:41.428] students, for users. they may see that pulled [00:08:43.649] forward, but generally they change monthly [00:08:45.989] kind of depending on what's going on in the world. [00:08:49.489] And when we scroll down below that, we [00:08:51.599] have these different topics listed out here. [00:08:53.729] Again, as I mentioned, this is a cross curricular resource. [00:08:56.529] So you'll see we've got sections related to [00:08:58.570] literature social studies. [00:09:00.940] So little things like government business. [00:09:03.239] We have a science and health section here [00:09:06.519] and we do have all of our biographies pulled out [00:09:08.658] separately in their own section as well. [00:09:11.298] And all of these that are listed are actually going to [00:09:13.349] be topic pages. [00:09:15.279] So what we do is we curate [00:09:17.288] these pages for some of the top search and [00:09:19.359] tap used terms within the resource [00:09:21.830] and we really lay them out nice and organized [00:09:23.908] for users who will be able to see an overview [00:09:26.158] and then all of the different [00:09:28.769] all of the different results. So reference [00:09:30.849] articles, magazines, videos, [00:09:32.879] all the good stuff. They'll see that right on the topic [00:09:35.139] page. [00:09:36.590] And you'll see if I click into any of these. [00:09:39.639] Our topic page list is pretty extensive. [00:09:42.229] So this is just what's found under business and economics. [00:09:45.500] If I go here and hit view all, [00:09:48.190] you'll see. We've got a very large collection [00:09:50.250] of topic pages here [00:09:51.769] and these aren't the only topics in the resource. [00:09:53.918] Of course, if your user coming in with something that's [00:09:55.928] a little bit more specific, um, that's [00:09:57.979] may be studied in your state a [00:10:00.000] lot, but maybe not nationally, they may [00:10:02.019] not have a topic page created just yet because [00:10:04.178] it's not as broadly studied. if [00:10:06.558] that's the case, if they kind of browse through this [00:10:08.759] to see if there's a topic page and they don't see one, [00:10:10.940] of course, they'll just run their search and they'll pull content [00:10:13.298] that way. [00:10:14.168] But if they are studying something that is [00:10:16.250] frequently studied or, you know, in the news today [00:10:18.450] or something like that, [00:10:19.710] they'll probably find a topic page for that. And I definitely [00:10:21.849] recommend directing your students to try [00:10:24.029] to find topic pages for whatever they're learning [00:10:26.219] about. So [00:10:28.450] again, they can browse through [00:10:30.229] just by clicking into any of these sections [00:10:32.570] or if they decided to run a search, [00:10:34.769] instead I'm gonna search today for [00:10:36.869] Cryptocurrency because I feel like that's fairly, [00:10:39.889] popular. [00:10:41.229] So if they decided to run a search instead [00:10:43.460] of, um, kind of browsing through these topics [00:10:45.700] on this page, you'll see when they start to search [00:10:47.859] here. I have one option that's bolded [00:10:50.109] at the very top of my predictive text and [00:10:52.340] that's showing me that have a topic page. [00:10:54.678] So instead of running a search, like if I ran a search [00:10:56.830] for Crystal, um, and just getting [00:10:58.840] a search results page where all of the results [00:11:00.940] are listed, if I click into that bolded [00:11:03.178] one I'm taken to the topic page [00:11:05.320] and this is organized for me. [00:11:07.070] So this is especially helpful for [00:11:09.298] your users who are maybe not [00:11:11.989] super organized in their research just [00:11:14.019] yet. You know, maybe they're kind of beginner researchers [00:11:17.129] and it's hard for them to pull the content they [00:11:19.139] need or [00:11:20.090] maybe it's difficult for them to build their own search [00:11:22.500] terms. We're trying to alleviate that [00:11:24.899] that stress here and we've pulled forward [00:11:27.080] forward these topic pages. [00:11:29.590] These are also great. If you are an educator [00:11:31.899] on the line [00:11:32.979] and you're trying to find content for students, you can [00:11:35.099] actually pull a topic page, [00:11:37.308] use this little get link button up top here [00:11:40.219] and you can actually send this topic page over to [00:11:42.259] your students. So if you just want them [00:11:44.418] all on the Cryptocurrency topic page, [00:11:46.460] you're doing a lesson, you want them to be able to [00:11:48.820] explore the results without, without having [00:11:51.058] to kind of get them to run their own searches necessarily, [00:11:54.298] you use this get link and they have access [00:11:56.519] to this great topic page. So at the very [00:11:58.710] top of every topic page, there's going to be just [00:12:00.979] a nice brief overview and this is giving [00:12:03.330] the background about that topic. So it's really setting [00:12:05.668] the stage for that deeper learning. So we'll have [00:12:07.759] the overview of the top here and this is [00:12:09.769] always going to be um a reference document, [00:12:12.330] of course, unless it's about a person, then it'll be [00:12:14.450] a biography. But if it's about a topic, it's [00:12:16.548] going to be a reference article. [00:12:19.149] And if we scroll down here on this topic page, [00:12:21.779] you'll see it's showing us the different content [00:12:24.009] types that we've pulled results for so [00:12:26.149] specific to Cryptocurrency. You'll see. We've [00:12:28.178] got a few reference articles, a lot of audio. [00:12:30.830] Um, we do have one biography, not quite [00:12:32.879] sure what it's about, we can scroll down and find out a lot [00:12:35.298] of magazine and news results. Of course, [00:12:37.658] Cryptocurrency is frequently [00:12:39.899] making headlines. So we have a lot of news and [00:12:41.960] magazines. We've got some images and some [00:12:44.080] videos and we even have a couple academic journal [00:12:46.440] entries related to Cryptocurrency [00:12:50.048] scrolling down from there. I'm going to see these different [00:12:52.269] content buckets that, that are including [00:12:54.558] those different content types. So reference [00:12:57.019] contents, um oftentimes we'll [00:12:59.070] pull out some featured content, sometimes it's videos, [00:13:01.678] sometimes it's articles [00:13:04.139] changes from time to time scrolling [00:13:06.219] down beneath that here, you'll see our [00:13:08.320] video and our images are listed and then [00:13:10.428] at the very bottom of the page, I wanna scroll all the way [00:13:12.570] down here. [00:13:13.690] We have related topics. So [00:13:16.038] these are also topic pages that are going to [00:13:18.090] be related to Cryptocurrency. So this is [00:13:20.099] a really nice way for your users to keep [00:13:22.109] learning again without running a search. So they learned [00:13:24.190] about Cryptocurrency a bit. [00:13:26.479] Maybe now they're really interested just in like standard [00:13:28.879] money and banking, you know, they want to know just how regular [00:13:31.469] old, you know, archaic [00:13:33.869] banking works. If we're not talking about Cryptocurrency, [00:13:36.979] they can click into money and banking and get [00:13:39.029] to that topic page. So a really nice [00:13:41.239] way to point and click to find content again [00:13:43.418] without even having to run a search. [00:13:46.989] Now, I'm going to scroll back up here a bit and [00:13:49.029] I'm going to click into all of my reference articles [00:13:51.239] because maybe I just want to take a look at something [00:13:53.369] that's just giving me the facts of, of a topic. [00:13:55.779] So I'm gonna click into reference here [00:13:59.158] and when I click into that title, it's going [00:14:01.168] to pull forward all of my results. You see, we have 12 [00:14:03.399] listed here [00:14:06.759] and now I have some different options for filtering [00:14:08.928] on this right hand side here. Luckily, [00:14:10.950] this topic page itself is pretty filtered already. [00:14:13.450] Of course, with 12 entries. Um, [00:14:15.668] other topic pages that are a little bit more broad, [00:14:17.808] they could get, you know, hundreds of reference articles, [00:14:19.989] maybe even thousands. If that's [00:14:22.029] the case, they [00:14:23.293] should consider using filters to kind of narrow down. [00:14:25.565] I oftentimes find these subjects filter [00:14:27.884] is helpful. So we're on Cryptocurrency. [00:14:30.134] But if specifically we want to know, you know how [00:14:32.423] artificial intelligence is related to Cryptocurrency, [00:14:35.325] we can click right here and we'll narrow it down just [00:14:37.335] to two articles instead of those 12. [00:14:40.019] So this is a great way to, for them to narrow down [00:14:42.119] and find content again since this [00:14:44.239] is a pretty um [00:14:46.168] already filter topic page and we are down [00:14:48.219] to the 12 reference articles. We may not need [00:14:50.369] to use as many filters. But [00:14:52.489] I do want to mention that they're here and ready to go [00:14:54.519] for your users. [00:14:56.950] I can also easily change between different [00:14:59.219] content types in this gray bar up top here. [00:15:01.340] So clicked into reference, but maybe I want [00:15:03.399] to see some of the featured stuff that we've pulled [00:15:05.428] forward. I can click right over here into [00:15:07.450] our featured content. [00:15:08.908] Usually it's around three [00:15:10.918] pieces of content. Sometimes it's a couple more, [00:15:13.029] but usually it's around three. [00:15:15.139] And I can scroll down and take a look and see [00:15:17.250] if there's anything interesting to me. And let's [00:15:19.538] say there is, let's say this first one, the mistakes [00:15:21.658] to avoid when buying Cryptocurrency, [00:15:24.369] pretty important to know I can click into this [00:15:26.428] here and I will be poor, pulled forward [00:15:28.619] to my article. [00:15:30.649] And once your users are on this article, there's [00:15:32.840] a lot they can do to make sure that this [00:15:34.979] is um you know, a successful learning [00:15:37.139] experience for them. There are a lot of different tools [00:15:39.259] that are going to help them out. The first is going [00:15:41.369] to be our citation option. So if this is [00:15:43.399] a student coming in learning about this, [00:15:45.469] maybe using those documents [00:15:47.210] in a paper they're writing or for a project, [00:15:49.759] we have a citation button right up top here [00:15:51.808] in our toolbar. [00:15:53.879] When they click into this, they'll have a premade [00:15:56.080] citation, either Mlaap, a Chicago [00:15:58.479] or Harvard versions and [00:16:00.509] they can copy and paste this into their reference [00:16:03.109] page. You'll see they can also export it over. [00:16:05.259] So if they're using you know, a Google [00:16:07.469] drive or a Onedrive or maybe noodle tools, [00:16:09.558] they can get the citation over that way to save [00:16:11.788] it to wherever they need it to go. [00:16:15.340] They can also save this full document. [00:16:17.739] So if this is something you want to take a look [00:16:19.769] at, but maybe they don't, don't have time right now. They're [00:16:21.918] just kind of [00:16:23.279] intelligence gathering and they'll take a deeper dive [00:16:25.548] later on. They're going to want to use [00:16:27.609] either the send to button here, this little [00:16:29.840] paper plane [00:16:32.538] that's going to let them send over to Google or Onedrive [00:16:35.129] or email to themselves [00:16:38.119] or they're going to want to hit this download [00:16:40.178] or this print option, the download, just download [00:16:42.250] downloads as a PDF onto their computer. [00:16:44.940] Of course, print as you would expect, prints [00:16:47.000] the article. [00:16:48.029] in addition to having those tools [00:16:50.349] up top here, they're also found down [00:16:52.389] below underneath the title of the article [00:16:54.609] as well. So these buttons, you'll see they're a little [00:16:56.750] bit more separate as opposed to being just under [00:16:58.840] the send to button. We've pulled out [00:17:01.239] Google drive onedrive [00:17:03.250] and email. So these do the same thing [00:17:05.289] we've just included them in two different spots just to [00:17:07.368] make sure your use, your users find them easily. [00:17:11.160] In addition to that, I already briefly [00:17:13.400] mentioned get link when I was on a topic page, [00:17:15.858] you can also use get link to get to a document. [00:17:18.410] So if you want to share this out with your class or [00:17:20.630] maybe you want to put it on your discussion board, [00:17:22.880] you can just copy this link, paste it to your [00:17:24.910] board in your syllabus in your [00:17:27.509] rubric. If you're having them complete [00:17:29.549] a project wherever you want to go, and when [00:17:31.630] they click into this link, they're going [00:17:33.670] to be pulled right to this article. Or if [00:17:35.719] you link to an image or [00:17:37.818] a video, [00:17:38.709] they actually won't need to worry about authentication. [00:17:42.189] Of course, if they decide to move forward and the resource, [00:17:44.660] maybe run some of their own research, [00:17:46.828] however, you authenticate, they'll be prompted [00:17:48.880] to do that at that point. So if you, [00:17:51.059] you know, need a password or if you are [00:17:53.338] authenticating with Google or with Microsoft, [00:17:55.689] they'll have to do it at that point. But with [00:17:57.890] this specific link, they'll be able to get [00:17:59.900] to this document without having to worry about remembering [00:18:02.160] a password. [00:18:03.328] So really nice for homework. You know, if you're [00:18:05.338] setting this home for students to read, I [00:18:08.088] there's nothing worse than telling them to click into this [00:18:10.108] and then all of them forgot their password and have no [00:18:12.250] way of getting in contact with you until the next [00:18:14.400] day when it's due. [00:18:15.568] we're, we're trying to alleviate that. So with [00:18:17.729] that get link, they'll automatically have access [00:18:20.108] to this article will be able to read through the full [00:18:22.118] thing. And then if they need [00:18:24.160] to later on, [00:18:25.459] um [00:18:26.489] they can sign in to move forward within [00:18:28.650] G and contacts high school. [00:18:31.828] So in addition to those kind of saving and [00:18:33.930] sharing tools, [00:18:36.160] we have some different tools that are going to make this text [00:18:39.049] a bit more accessible for a lot of your users. [00:18:41.699] So the first is going to be our translate button, which [00:18:43.900] you'll see is found right here under this black bar, [00:18:47.469] you'll see I can drop this down and I can translate into [00:18:49.549] quite a few different languages [00:18:52.019] here. And I can also [00:18:54.318] set my interface language which is going to [00:18:56.358] change all of the buttons and all of my [00:18:58.449] navigation into whatever language I choose. [00:19:01.449] So I'll be able to translate at any time. [00:19:04.328] I can also increase and decrease the font [00:19:06.348] size as needed [00:19:08.809] next to that under my little display options [00:19:11.219] button. I have quite a few different options [00:19:13.299] here. I can change the background color of the text [00:19:15.640] that I'm going to be reading. [00:19:17.338] I can change the font, [00:19:20.318] I can also change the line letter and word spacing. [00:19:23.618] So our goal with this is to make it really [00:19:25.910] simple for your users to get the exact [00:19:27.989] experience they need you know, for [00:19:30.170] me, this screen is very distracting. I don't think [00:19:32.219] I'd be able to read on the screen, but of course, for someone [00:19:34.489] else, it could be really helpful to kind [00:19:36.539] of narrow their focus a little bit. [00:19:38.489] So we're making it [00:19:39.900] really kind of [00:19:41.259] easy to find and easy to use to make sure [00:19:43.299] they get the, the view that they need. [00:19:45.838] And this does follow them along throughout the [00:19:47.890] session. So [00:19:49.459] if they changed it to this open dyslexic [00:19:51.479] font in this article, the next article, [00:19:53.750] they click, it'll be the same deal. It'll have that [00:19:55.890] font, they can go back to the default [00:19:58.150] settings at any time right here. [00:20:01.219] And now we're back to normal [00:20:03.709] right next to that display options. We also have [00:20:05.910] our listen tool and that's going to [00:20:07.959] just read through the full article for me. You see when [00:20:09.979] I hit that button, it's going to pull forward this [00:20:12.118] little, um this little [00:20:14.199] panel that's going to let me read it. [00:20:16.358] It also gives me the option to download this as an [00:20:18.400] MP3. If I want to take the [00:20:20.479] read speaker with me or later on, [00:20:22.640] I can do that. [00:20:23.789] And this does read in whatever language I translated [00:20:26.338] this article to. So if I translated [00:20:28.578] this to Spanish first and I wanted to have [00:20:30.689] it read to me after I translate when [00:20:32.779] I hit listen, it will just automatically [00:20:34.799] read to me in Spanish, I won't need to [00:20:36.858] worry about translating that in any way, [00:20:39.618] they are just kind of linked together. [00:20:43.818] Now, one last tool I want to mention when we're on [00:20:45.989] our document is our highlights and notes tool. [00:20:48.410] So if you prefer to have your students kind [00:20:50.439] of talk to the text, find key points [00:20:52.739] in their articles and highlight them to try to save [00:20:55.049] them. Remember them for later, [00:20:57.039] they can just click and drag over any piece [00:20:59.338] of text within the resource. We [00:21:01.390] get this little dialogue box pop up, we could [00:21:03.400] choose a color. I can add a note [00:21:05.410] if I want to [00:21:10.420] and I can save it and I can go through and highlight [00:21:12.500] as much as I want. I can add notes [00:21:14.650] or not. I can choose different colors [00:21:17.140] but I can go through and really just mark this text [00:21:19.400] up and this is session [00:21:21.559] based. I will warn you. So if your [00:21:24.068] users sign off because they're going to [00:21:26.078] do something else or if they, you know, leave [00:21:28.189] it open on their browser too long and they're signed [00:21:30.289] out due to inactivity, this content [00:21:32.630] is going to be gone. [00:21:33.959] So make sure if they're going to be leaving their computers, [00:21:36.449] but they want to save their highlights. They [00:21:38.608] need to get this document out of the resource [00:21:41.029] and they can do that in any of the ways that I mentioned [00:21:43.529] sending over to their drive, emailing [00:21:45.848] it, downloading or printing it, [00:21:47.578] any of those ways are going to retain those highlights [00:21:50.239] and any notes they took for your users. [00:21:56.459] Now we keep all of our highlights and notes in one [00:21:58.519] more section here. If you [00:22:00.390] take a look at this very top in this toolbar, [00:22:02.400] I have my highlights and notes button here. [00:22:04.959] When I click into this, you'll see, it's showing me what [00:22:07.250] I've highlighted on this article and the colors [00:22:09.559] I highlighted with. [00:22:11.318] But if I click this view all highlights, [00:22:15.059] this is actually going to show me everything I've highlighted [00:22:17.469] throughout the entire session. So if [00:22:19.500] I were to have highlighted through, you know, two or [00:22:21.578] three articles, I would have each of those articles [00:22:23.689] listed, [00:22:25.219] I would have a running bibliography. Of course, [00:22:27.469] right now, I just have this one article that I highlighted. [00:22:30.160] But if I highlighted more than one, I'd have that [00:22:32.209] running bibliography listed here, [00:22:34.420] you'll see I can add or edit my notes [00:22:36.568] if needed and I can actually send [00:22:38.939] download or print this specific page here. [00:22:41.380] So if I maybe don't want to save the full article, [00:22:43.689] I just wanna save those little clips that I [00:22:46.009] that I found that I really like, I can [00:22:48.328] go to the highlights and notes page and just hit [00:22:50.358] my send to my download or my print [00:22:52.469] and it will do that for me. [00:22:56.739] Now, I do have one more quick tool. I want to take [00:22:58.880] a look at our topic finder. But before [00:23:01.019] I do, does anyone have any questions about [00:23:03.309] navigating the platform about some of [00:23:05.380] the tools we went over about topic pages, [00:23:08.289] anything like that at all? [00:23:13.469] Ok. I don't see anything. [00:23:15.539] So let's go ahead and take a look. Then we've got a couple [00:23:17.799] of minutes. So I definitely want to show you this. Um, [00:23:20.199] our topic finder is going to appear. If [00:23:22.618] you run a basic search, it's going to appear near [00:23:24.818] your filters on the right hand side [00:23:26.939] or we can actually go to it directly through [00:23:29.068] our advanced search. And that's what I'm gonna do today. [00:23:31.858] So I'm going to click advanced search here. [00:23:35.568] Now, the top under my search options, [00:23:37.719] you'll see my option here for topic [00:23:39.920] finder. [00:23:43.170] And this is a nice interactive. It's going to be [00:23:45.180] helpful for any users who maybe [00:23:47.739] have trouble building their own search terms and are [00:23:49.828] searching for something really broad that's pulling, [00:23:52.029] you know, thousands and thousands of results. [00:23:54.380] Of course, that's really frustrating and can [00:23:56.390] sometimes turn users off of using these [00:23:58.420] resources. So this is a nice way [00:24:00.578] to kind of get around that. So if I run a search [00:24:02.969] I'll search today. Oh inflation, [00:24:05.239] I must have searched for inflation before. [00:24:07.269] let's run a search for inflation because of [00:24:09.299] course, that is seems to be everywhere [00:24:11.309] in the news. No matter where you are, you're gonna hear [00:24:13.430] the term inflation. So of course, [00:24:15.660] high school students are probably trying to figure [00:24:17.729] out exactly what inflation is and what that means [00:24:19.818] for them. So when I run my search [00:24:22.009] for inflation, [00:24:23.068] you'll see. I get some kind, some topics that are [00:24:25.259] related to inflation. So I'm going to [00:24:27.299] be able to start stepping down and [00:24:29.719] narrowing my results about inflation [00:24:32.299] to make sure I'm not pulling forward [00:24:34.279] thousands and thousands of articles that might not [00:24:36.338] be exactly what I need. [00:24:38.759] So I click into inflation. Maybe [00:24:41.309] I'm interested now in consumer prices. You [00:24:43.400] know, how exactly is inflation impacting [00:24:45.868] the price of goods? I can click [00:24:47.930] here and [00:24:50.049] now I'm pulled forward to another level here. [00:24:52.160] You'll see right now, I've got 67 results [00:24:54.779] related to inflation and [00:24:56.818] consumer prices if that's [00:24:59.098] still too many. And I just, I don't want to scroll down [00:25:01.568] through all of these 67 articles. [00:25:03.858] I can take a step lower here. Ok, [00:25:05.890] so maybe I'm interested. Um You [00:25:07.930] know, I heard [00:25:09.400] prices rose and I wanted to specifically [00:25:12.029] see what prices rose or why [00:25:14.059] or maybe I want to take a look at gasoline [00:25:16.400] inflation. I can click into any one [00:25:18.500] of those. If I click into gasoline, you'll see now [00:25:20.969] I'm at five results as opposed [00:25:23.049] to that 67. So [00:25:25.150] this is really stepping your users [00:25:27.489] right down to the content that they need. [00:25:29.578] It's a really nice alternative to kind [00:25:31.588] of trying to weed through a search results page [00:25:35.949] and right underneath this, I can hit my reset [00:25:38.000] button at any time [00:25:40.400] and start right back from the top here [00:25:42.608] and my search does stay at the top as well. [00:25:44.650] So if I want to search instead of [00:25:46.670] inflation for something else, I'll [00:25:48.838] be able to change it right here as well. [00:25:56.059] Now, we've got just a few minutes left and I do have some [00:25:58.118] wrap up information for you all. So while I switch [00:26:00.410] back over to my slides, um, [00:26:03.098] oops, give [00:26:09.709] me a second here. [00:26:11.529] There it goes. [00:26:13.368] Apparently I'm having trouble with my keyboard today. [00:26:16.078] Um If you have any questions, go [00:26:18.088] ahead and type them into the Q and A and I'll be [00:26:20.160] sure to take a look at those, but I do want [00:26:22.239] to give you some wrap up information.
