[00:00:01.649] Hello folks and welcome. I'm Stacey [00:00:04.089] Knibloe Gale trainer for New Mexico. Glad [00:00:06.488] to be with you for our support beginner [00:00:08.589] research skills uh with Gale [00:00:10.788] in context elementary. So [00:00:13.169] with this session, what we want to do is [00:00:15.179] just provide an overview of the resource to [00:00:17.269] start. But then we're really gonna get in there [00:00:19.388] and show how you can find content and [00:00:21.500] help build up skills in students as they [00:00:23.559] start to learn about research [00:00:25.750] and learn about the library and all the things [00:00:27.839] that come with it [00:00:29.129] Um this is a perfect database to do that with. [00:00:31.379] We've got a great looking interface, lots of [00:00:33.429] great uh reading level appropriate [00:00:35.500] content. And um [00:00:38.200] Little tools and bells and whistles, bells and whistles [00:00:40.548] that they can kind of take with them up through [00:00:42.700] into adulthood when they're uh you know, performing [00:00:45.039] any sort of research. Uh We'll also [00:00:47.279] talk a bit about how you can share content from [00:00:49.380] the resource. So if there are particular things [00:00:51.618] you want to get younger kids started with [00:00:54.020] with their research and you want to point them in exactly [00:00:56.598] the direction you want them to go. There are a few different [00:00:58.740] ways you can share content in the resource and we want [00:01:00.759] to talk about those too [00:01:02.209] and then as always with our sessions we'll wrap [00:01:04.230] up with uh support where [00:01:06.620] you can go at gale, both kind [00:01:08.638] of on demand but also when you want to talk to someone [00:01:11.388] uh we have a lot of support out there [00:01:13.469] for you to take advantage of. So we'll [00:01:15.558] talk about that as well as [00:01:17.689] we go through. Jump in with questions any time. [00:01:20.370] Uh If you see something on the screen you want to know more [00:01:22.430] about. Or want me to click. I'm happy to do that. [00:01:24.900] Uh just jump in at any point. [00:01:27.668] So let's go ahead and [00:01:29.948] dive in here. [00:01:31.969] so again just an overview of the resource. [00:01:34.459] Just a little more pressure maybe you haven't used it in a while [00:01:37.769] Gale and in context. Elementary. [00:01:40.168] Um some of you may know it as kids [00:01:42.299] info bits. We had a name and interface [00:01:44.319] change a couple of years ago and [00:01:46.120] I will admit I still tend to call it kids [00:01:48.349] info bits here and there but uh it's official [00:01:50.629] name Gale In Context: Elementary to kind [00:01:52.638] of identify its main audience. Um [00:01:55.230] But really if the reading level [00:01:57.329] is what you need, of course any user can [00:01:59.489] go into this resource. Um it [00:02:01.629] is uh [00:02:02.980] gonna be the reading level that's really [00:02:05.069] the most important for your user. So [00:02:07.980] what you'll find in this content or [00:02:10.099] or within this resource is content aimed [00:02:12.558] at curriculum within an elementary [00:02:15.088] uh grade range. You know what's [00:02:17.129] being studied in the classroom? [00:02:19.580] and then uh supporting that are a variety [00:02:21.960] of different sources. So uh reference [00:02:24.740] books, magazines, multimedia [00:02:27.419] all in one place, lots of [00:02:29.500] different subject areas covered here. [00:02:31.629] Um Again, looking at what's studied in curriculum, [00:02:34.058] but then additional, you know, content as [00:02:36.149] well, things to help students, you know, learn [00:02:38.338] about social media, learn about technology [00:02:40.558] and the like. So uh lots of good [00:02:42.740] stuff here. [00:02:44.288] and it is let me advance [00:02:46.308] my slide here. There we go. Oh, I'm always ahead [00:02:48.449] of the slide. So again, supporting curriculum standards [00:02:51.189] as you can imagine a lot of research in this database [00:02:53.469] done on animals. Uh we'll find lots of [00:02:55.528] great content there, but again it's gonna hit [00:02:57.538] every major curriculum area as well [00:03:00.270] and then and lots of tools to help [00:03:02.659] them kind of narrow topics find [00:03:04.758] answers to questions and just [00:03:06.830] explore the things they're interested in [00:03:09.008] and again kind of building up those research [00:03:11.229] skills, their information literacy skills [00:03:13.270] and kind of these subtle ways and all the different tools [00:03:15.278] that you have in the resource as well. [00:03:17.278] So we're gonna spend really most of our time [00:03:19.508] right in the resource. So let's go [00:03:21.528] ahead and dive into the live database. [00:03:25.360] and I've already got us logged in here to [00:03:27.368] get started, [00:03:29.028] So the home page for Gale and context elementary [00:03:31.508] really does [00:03:32.729] encourage kids kind of natural curiosity. [00:03:35.520] There is always a search but [00:03:37.669] we like to encourage kids to [00:03:39.750] have a look around. So there are [00:03:42.330] uh we're gonna actually spend a little more time here back on the [00:03:44.349] topics page, so I'm gonna go to the rest of the tabs [00:03:46.528] here first [00:03:47.659] there are highlighted [00:03:49.778] con uh bits of highlighted content from [00:03:52.159] some of your eBook collection, whatever's reading [00:03:54.449] level appropriate, will show up here. So [00:03:56.770] coming from Gale eBooks, you have a nice [00:03:58.979] collection from the state library [00:04:01.038] aimed at those reading levels so we can [00:04:03.129] kind of browse the books that are here. [00:04:06.028] and this um collection has been [00:04:08.088] pumped up a bit this year, some new titles [00:04:10.229] were added. We actually offered a webinar [00:04:12.330] on those sessions um a couple [00:04:14.399] weeks ago uh when uh [00:04:16.670] you received the follow up email from [00:04:18.850] this session, I'll put a link to that session [00:04:20.910] as well in case you want to explore the recording for that [00:04:23.850] so just kind of piking their interest with any [00:04:25.949] of these books and if we go ahead and say jump into [00:04:28.048] one. [00:04:29.649] you're uh able to browse the eBook [00:04:31.988] like it's you know sitting in front of you on [00:04:34.108] the table you can just [00:04:36.170] use the uh the next page [00:04:38.209] or if I want a mobile device or any sort [00:04:40.298] of touch screen, I'd be able to swipe to get through [00:04:42.548] it, you can zoom in and out, [00:04:44.709] You've got our text to speech tool here, [00:04:47.290] you know, some really handy uh ways to explore [00:04:49.639] the content [00:04:52.548] you can also browse through [00:04:54.569] uh some highlighted news articles coming [00:04:56.809] from um our kind of kid themed [00:04:59.230] or kid aimed newspaper sources [00:05:03.250] Hand pulled some images here to browse [00:05:05.649] around again just kind of peeking [00:05:07.670] interest here [00:05:09.250] on a bit of a bug kick. So I'll go ahead and grab this. [00:05:11.428] Uh harvest and image. [00:05:15.319] You can do the same for video content. [00:05:19.350] and the video content has really grown over [00:05:21.600] the last year we had a lot of great stem [00:05:23.928] topics but now we're working with some other providers [00:05:26.199] to bring in another video content. So [00:05:28.689] an eye out for that as well. But again just kind of building [00:05:31.009] their on their natural curiosity, [00:05:34.778] the home page though that you land [00:05:36.959] on is gonna be this topics tab [00:05:39.100] and this I think is always a great [00:05:41.420] tool when students are starting [00:05:43.660] to learn about research, maybe they're picking a topic. [00:05:46.139] I imagine a lot of times an animal [00:05:48.358] report is the first thing they're gonna do. [00:05:50.449] Or maybe a state report, something like [00:05:52.548] that. [00:05:53.420] on the home page. What we've done [00:05:55.600] is just kind of started to organize [00:05:58.019] some of the coverage of the database by [00:06:00.238] subject area. And I say that because [00:06:02.928] our In Context databases are [00:06:05.028] built in kind of this portal [00:06:07.329] format where we take a topic [00:06:09.629] and dedicate a whole home page to [00:06:11.639] it. And that's really what you're gonna browse [00:06:13.959] as you work with these topic pages or topic [00:06:16.298] tree. We often call it as well. [00:06:18.449] And it's a great starter for ST students [00:06:20.838] to kind of learn about how information [00:06:22.850] gets organized. So we don't [00:06:25.119] just kind of throw everything up on the shelves [00:06:27.410] of willy nilly right. We don't we do the same [00:06:29.569] thing in our databases, we start breaking [00:06:31.750] them down by category. So if we choose something [00:06:33.970] like animals [00:06:35.559] We start narrowing down. So again, [00:06:37.759] we don't just go to a list of animals. We start [00:06:40.160] choosing well do we want reptiles? Do we [00:06:42.170] want birds? Do we want dinosaurs, mammals. [00:06:44.838] And you kind of take on these big topics and [00:06:46.939] start narrowing them down [00:06:48.879] and then you'll get to a list. [00:06:50.939] So this is especially handy when kids maybe [00:06:53.209] have a choice in what they're doing a report [00:06:55.220] on. So they can go through these pages. [00:06:57.459] They've all got pictures. So you get that kind [00:06:59.480] of visual cue of what you're looking [00:07:01.540] for. Especially handy for kids who may [00:07:03.569] struggle with reading [00:07:05.569] or any students where maybe English isn't their [00:07:07.608] first language. Uh you've got that [00:07:09.750] option as well to uh have those [00:07:11.970] those pictures to kind of zero in [00:07:14.639] and then once you select [00:07:17.160] You land on this dedicated home [00:07:19.220] page. So this is the giraffe section of [00:07:21.278] the database. The same way we might have a little giraffe [00:07:23.459] section on the shelves. So you [00:07:25.629] line up with everything we've got for [00:07:27.660] giraffes here and we start out with [00:07:29.988] some quick facts. So giraffes have long [00:07:32.278] nets, they are very tall, they eat plants, [00:07:34.399] we get these facts right off the bat [00:07:36.639] and then a few extra ones here in our quick facts [00:07:39.119] line. [00:07:41.088] and then all the different pieces and [00:07:43.149] a page layout like this where we're identifying. [00:07:45.759] Well these are book articles, these are magazine [00:07:47.850] articles, these are news articles, [00:07:49.750] you're building up kind of learning about different [00:07:52.350] types of media, you know different [00:07:54.689] ways we're kind of gathering information and [00:07:56.699] what different sources of types are out there. [00:07:58.750] So we start building their knowledge around that. [00:08:00.980] And so if they've got a report and they have [00:08:03.149] to find [00:08:04.540] You know two books and they have to find three [00:08:06.798] magazines. They're gonna be able to easily [00:08:09.160] identify those on the page here. [00:08:12.000] As well as of course the multimedia sources [00:08:14.100] too. So pictures related topics [00:08:16.608] and videos. If there were any we just all [00:08:18.720] see it gathered here on this kind of home page [00:08:21.869] and you can start here. So [00:08:23.879] let's say I'm gonna go back actually to the home page [00:08:26.660] I mentioned I'm gonna kind of blend in [00:08:28.850] everything all at once. So I'm gonna about to talk about how [00:08:30.980] you can share out content with students. [00:08:33.090] So let's say they have to do a state report [00:08:35.538] if I go ahead and go through geography. [00:08:38.024] I can then again start breaking this down [00:08:40.325] so we're talking about you know different land [00:08:42.724] formations, we've got some of that but then we've [00:08:44.894] got the way that geography is made [00:08:46.904] out around the globe. So say if we go into U. S. [00:08:49.075] States again we just get these lists. [00:08:51.724] So state capital is showing here [00:08:55.048] well grab New Mexico [00:08:58.369] and say I know all of my [00:09:01.090] say third graders are gonna [00:09:03.288] be studying [00:09:05.489] and do I have to do a report on new Mexico. [00:09:08.590] I want them to land here rather than [00:09:10.649] coming into the database [00:09:12.739] and searching or going through the browse [00:09:14.879] tool. I just want to put them right here. [00:09:17.149] the way you can do that is [00:09:19.369] to take advantage of our get link [00:09:22.048] tool. Get link is gonna [00:09:24.308] appear in this toolbar that [00:09:26.340] goes across the top of the database [00:09:29.038] and you'll see it on most pages. What [00:09:31.090] it's gonna give you is a persistent [00:09:33.129] U. R. L. Or pearl [00:09:35.440] that you can then place wherever [00:09:37.489] you would normally put A U. R. L. So link it [00:09:39.538] on your library's website a teacher could [00:09:41.580] put it on their web page. Or if you have a learning [00:09:43.739] management system you could post the link [00:09:45.788] there, you can put it [00:09:48.369] in an email again wherever A [00:09:50.379] U. R. L. Would go. [00:09:51.889] And what's great about it is when kids [00:09:54.048] click on it, they land right here, they [00:09:56.149] kind of jump over those other um [00:09:58.619] you know longer paths to get to this [00:10:00.690] content and they're there with your shortcut just [00:10:02.840] like this. So [00:10:04.129] It's a great way to draw them into [00:10:06.139] the library resources. It's a great way [00:10:08.288] for you to push content out. So [00:10:10.509] let's say you're at the public library and you know [00:10:12.690] that this is what's happening in fourth grade. [00:10:14.779] You could put it there, you could share [00:10:16.960] it on your uh web page [00:10:19.058] to kind of push out to parents or even into [00:10:21.369] a newsletter that you're sending out [00:10:23.658] in school libraries. You could push this out, [00:10:26.058] you know, to your teachers in fourth grade [00:10:28.080] to let them know the library has this great resource. [00:10:30.320] So get link is really powerful. [00:10:32.759] It's a great way for you to draw folks in [00:10:34.820] to your library provided resources [00:10:38.359] So we're gonna talk about some other ways but get link [00:10:40.450] is probably the simplest. [00:10:42.580] It just gives you U. R. L. That you can then take anywhere [00:10:45.808] Not that the others are that difficult but [00:10:47.849] um the U. R. L. It's kind of universal. [00:10:49.859] Right? So All [00:10:51.918] right, let's take a look. We're gonna now [00:10:54.158] use the search tool or actually, you know [00:10:56.190] what? Let me show you around the topic trees a bit more. [00:10:58.259] I want to uh talk about some of the newer [00:11:00.440] content and uh recently updated [00:11:02.529] content. So, we're never done with [00:11:04.690] our databases. We're always continuing [00:11:06.719] to work on them. And we listen to feedback. [00:11:08.940] We get from our libraries from [00:11:11.219] our school libraries, [00:11:13.408] our teachers and fill [00:11:15.580] in what's needed. We're also [00:11:17.759] been undergoing and looking, doing a biased [00:11:19.989] review of our content and that'll be ongoing as [00:11:22.099] well. So did things need rewriting? [00:11:25.048] Um we're working with different groups to kind of advise [00:11:27.139] us on those things. So there's been a lot of work going [00:11:29.158] on in the resources um as [00:11:31.308] there always is, but um been some special [00:11:33.538] attention. So I wanted to point out under the people [00:11:35.599] section. [00:11:36.639] and you'll find some of this under the history as well. [00:11:39.668] We have uh bumped up our coverage [00:11:41.840] of Native Americans. So this is and [00:11:44.019] there have been a few other areas we focused on too. [00:11:46.029] But this is just um [00:11:48.190] I wanted to highlight here. It kind of goes [00:11:50.320] along with some of the new content in your [00:11:52.690] in your new eBooks from this year. [00:11:54.750] So we've built up this list as [00:11:56.840] well. We've also done [00:11:59.038] some work to round out jump [00:12:01.570] back. [00:12:03.548] coverage for kind of English [00:12:05.788] classes. Um we're gonna have, [00:12:08.129] you know, of course, still the study of literature. But [00:12:10.219] if we jump to say reading writing and language, there's [00:12:12.369] a lot of great content to go along with [00:12:14.529] other things we may talk about when we're when [00:12:16.668] we're, you know, looking at E. L. A. So, [00:12:19.139] you know, different. [00:12:20.908] uh topics. But some of these, I wanted to [00:12:22.950] point out because they'd be really handy in terms [00:12:25.259] of building research skills. So here [00:12:27.489] on our main idea. We talk [00:12:29.548] about what a main idea is [00:12:31.690] and you know the way it plays a role [00:12:33.908] in text. [00:12:35.389] The other thing that's good to look out [00:12:37.428] for is when you are [00:12:40.808] uh looking at your book, articles [00:12:42.889] or biographies. [00:12:44.769] You might notice a lot of articles [00:12:46.859] like this where it's the same title. It's [00:12:48.889] the same source. It's the same copyright. [00:12:51.250] What's different is the content [00:12:53.590] level indicator. There's a box next to [00:12:55.609] it. Level one and level two here just with those [00:12:57.719] dots, [00:12:59.320] Those are our two uh content [00:13:01.879] levels for elementary kind of level reading [00:13:04.178] level one is gonna be kind of K through [00:13:06.219] two and level two is gonna be grades [00:13:08.298] three through five, you know, kind of broad strokes. [00:13:10.788] What we've done is level [00:13:12.859] this article, we've taken it and [00:13:14.979] rewritten it at two different reading levels. [00:13:17.889] So this is handy for reading level differentiation [00:13:20.719] when you need it in the classroom or in the library. [00:13:23.489] Um you can kind of point the students to the ones you [00:13:25.538] think fit. If we take a look at say the level one [00:13:29.389] We start out right away with the words to no [00:13:31.529] glossary. So I don't have to look [00:13:33.599] up a definition. It's gonna be right here in the database [00:13:36.009] for me. [00:13:37.070] And you can see we've got short sentences, short [00:13:39.190] paragraphs [00:13:40.739] and when you're in an article that's been leveled, [00:13:43.369] you're gonna have the option to [00:13:46.989] Switch between the two. They're always linked [00:13:49.149] together [00:13:50.229] so I can switch over to the level two [00:13:52.849] and here's the same article just written at a slightly [00:13:55.210] higher level. So rather than starting with the glossary, [00:13:57.519] we start out with a few ideas [00:13:59.750] we can see the paragraphs are a little longer [00:14:01.979] here [00:14:03.019] or we're still talking about the same thing. [00:14:05.389] So you're gonna see that throughout the resource [00:14:08.009] and really and most of the Gale [00:14:10.048] and context databases. So that [00:14:12.399] leveled content is another thing we've [00:14:14.450] been working on and because we're our own [00:14:16.590] publisher at Gale we can do that. [00:14:18.830] So that's why you'll see it. I'm just gonna jump [00:14:20.849] back out to that [00:14:22.139] main page again, that's why you're [00:14:24.168] gonna see it with book articles and biographies, [00:14:26.399] because that's what we write at. Yale, we write reference content [00:14:28.820] so we can't take an article from, say, scholastic [00:14:31.428] news and rewrite it ourselves. [00:14:33.538] Right, So you're just gonna see it under book articles [00:14:35.899] and uh [00:14:37.538] and biographies. [00:14:39.969] All right, let me pause here see if anything's come into [00:14:42.149] the chat or the Q. And A. [00:14:45.649] No, we're in good shape. Alrighty. So let's [00:14:47.899] go ahead. And now I do want to uh dive in with the [00:14:49.940] search because when students already know what they're [00:14:52.029] doing their research project on, they [00:14:54.038] can of course dive in with the search [00:14:57.090] So let's say they're working on the rock cycle. [00:15:00.548] and again, whenever we've got a dedicated [00:15:02.750] page like this, a topic page we're gonna [00:15:04.859] land right on and I'll show you another search later [00:15:07.019] where that doesn't happen. So you can get a uh [00:15:08.918] look at that format as well. But [00:15:11.729] again, nice layout here. We start out with [00:15:13.849] some information, [00:15:16.058] And again, break down the content by the types [00:15:18.340] of sources it's coming from. [00:15:20.149] And I did want to share some video [00:15:22.219] content. You have [00:15:24.298] um always a broadcast transcript [00:15:26.619] to go along with the video. [00:15:28.558] But then also the video [00:15:30.580] itself [00:15:31.779] is gonna have those captioning enabled, [00:15:34.529] just gonna jump ahead. So we can get past the opening [00:15:36.599] music there. [00:15:38.869] rock [00:15:40.279] shift. And we have of course [00:15:42.369] options for changing that. [00:15:45.190] Sorry, I'm just gonna ahead and pause that. So I'm not speaking over [00:15:47.379] the video, but these can be a great way to [00:15:49.418] introduce the topic. Students can maybe some [00:15:51.529] ga gather some key words from, [00:15:53.619] you know, the short uh broadcast transcript [00:15:56.200] here [00:15:57.719] and come up with keywords to search on [00:16:00.058] and help build up uh again, [00:16:02.178] kind of skills around using [00:16:04.330] information sources like this. [00:16:08.418] and then you'll also see, I'm gonna just go ahead [00:16:10.500] and jump in to say some of our magazine results [00:16:12.590] here, move in [00:16:15.899] The articles are uh [00:16:18.190] gonna be text based although if we [00:16:20.250] have the rights to the images for the magazines, those [00:16:22.479] will show up here too. [00:16:24.330] What's great about though having a text [00:16:26.658] based article is you get to take advantage [00:16:29.029] of all of the tools that come with that [00:16:31.298] text. So things like the text to speech [00:16:33.379] tool. So we could have the article read to us [00:16:35.820] There's a font size tool here, display [00:16:38.330] options, translation [00:16:40.729] and then the info button is important, especially [00:16:43.379] if we're learning about research skills. [00:16:46.149] The info button is gonna give us all the details [00:16:48.399] about the articles in the elementary [00:16:50.940] database. We like to keep the article display [00:16:53.219] as simple as possible. So that's why [00:16:55.389] the info button kind of pops open [00:16:57.658] these details at the top. [00:16:59.678] Um [00:17:01.009] It is uh [00:17:02.918] you know, [00:17:03.960] and I kind of have a cleaner look without [00:17:06.180] it. But in our other databases, [00:17:08.390] this information is always shown at the top of [00:17:10.430] the article but you do have to enable it here in the [00:17:12.479] elementary database. But this is the kind of thing we [00:17:14.509] tell kids to look for, where is it [00:17:16.588] coming from? Who wrote it? When is it coming [00:17:18.838] from? And you get those details? So [00:17:20.979] when you're in any article just [00:17:23.039] jump around here into something else. [00:17:26.880] Just a quick click of that info button will [00:17:28.979] bring it open and you can uh get [00:17:31.160] those details [00:17:33.088] now the others. Um Actually let me show you display [00:17:35.618] options. This is a bit newer. [00:17:37.900] This basically will set the [00:17:40.039] article view so what does the text [00:17:42.088] look like on the page? We can [00:17:44.118] make adjustments based on the needs of [00:17:46.160] our of our learner. So I have a nephew [00:17:48.578] who um has a processing [00:17:50.618] issue and he needs text [00:17:52.750] to be on a green or blue background to really comprehend [00:17:55.229] it. So there I could set that green [00:17:57.430] background for him. I can change [00:17:59.489] the font that we're using if you know he [00:18:01.509] reads better with something that's got serifs, I can switch [00:18:03.709] to Garamond [00:18:04.890] or if you've got um students [00:18:07.289] with uh dyslexia, I can switch [00:18:09.549] to open dyslexic. [00:18:11.559] and it's just setting the stage, you can change the spacing [00:18:14.180] to make the reading a little easier. [00:18:19.098] And when you've done that, [00:18:21.160] it sets a cookie on your device. So if [00:18:23.259] I go out to another article [00:18:26.239] you choose something else here, I'll grab [00:18:28.809] uh century, it just [00:18:30.939] remembers, and it keeps [00:18:33.000] those display options intact. [00:18:35.358] So, really handy. [00:18:38.328] Now. I'm gonna go ahead and set these back to their defaults [00:18:42.680] and I want to share really one of our [00:18:44.729] favorite features. Um for [00:18:46.750] or at least I should say for students is our citation [00:18:49.368] tool. So of course in the research [00:18:51.509] pro process, students are gonna have to keep track [00:18:53.848] of where they're getting information and then they'll need [00:18:55.868] to, you know, include that in their report [00:18:58.150] bibliography work, cited, foot notes, whatever [00:19:00.489] sort of citation method they're using. [00:19:03.108] We've got a site tool, it's gonna be up here [00:19:05.250] in the toolbar just you know, near the get [00:19:07.299] link. and that's gonna [00:19:09.489] give me different citation style options. [00:19:12.019] So in elementary school we may not get be [00:19:14.108] getting as specific as this you [00:19:16.209] know they need to use M. L. A. Ninth edition [00:19:18.469] or something like that but it starts them thinking [00:19:20.549] on that path. You really need to include [00:19:22.959] where you found your info and [00:19:25.000] these are all ready to go [00:19:27.559] and if you have a tool like noodle [00:19:29.900] tools or easy bib or something like that, you can export [00:19:32.500] these out but always showing this. [00:19:34.880] It will also go with the article. [00:19:37.239] So if I print this article out, just [00:19:39.390] gives me a nice clean print of the article, [00:19:43.029] The citation is always embedded [00:19:45.039] at the end of the article. You're always gonna be able to [00:19:47.229] know where you got your content [00:19:50.019] So [00:19:52.189] you've got some other tools here. I just kind of to show [00:19:54.509] you the breadth of the database. I want to do a couple [00:19:56.608] of searches so you can see some of the content [00:19:58.618] areas. So I'm gonna do a quick search here. I mentioned before [00:20:00.890] we've got support per se. [00:20:02.949] Learning about digital citizenship [00:20:05.170] and things like social media and the like [00:20:07.229] there's lots of great support here. So [00:20:09.880] we have a page dedicated to social media [00:20:12.779] and let's say I've got a student who [00:20:14.848] is, you know, studying this as [00:20:16.949] they're reading through an article. We [00:20:19.000] have a feature called highlights and notes. [00:20:21.729] So, you know, if I've got a piece of paper in front of me, [00:20:23.890] I might go through it with a highlighter marker and make [00:20:25.910] notes in the margins. That's essentially [00:20:27.949] what I can do here. As I [00:20:31.539] I'm reading content if I find something [00:20:33.680] I want to use or call out [00:20:35.739] in some way I can click and drag as if I'm [00:20:37.779] gonna copy it. [00:20:39.098] And then the highlights and notes bar pops up [00:20:41.318] and I can use different colors. So [00:20:43.559] maybe I might be identifying [00:20:45.910] my uh, you know, yellow items [00:20:48.078] as something. That's a fact. And [00:20:50.880] I might identify something that [00:20:53.199] is more. And I'm just randomly [00:20:55.250] selecting something here. So don't hold me to [00:20:57.390] this because say I'm gonna use green for things that are [00:20:59.578] opinion. [00:21:00.890] so I can make little notes here. [00:21:03.380] and can do that throughout my time in [00:21:05.439] the resource. I can go into another [00:21:07.529] article. Let me just grab something [00:21:09.719] here. [00:21:12.500] Oh looks like this was probably looks like we might [00:21:14.568] be missing the image, grab something. [00:21:18.739] we can again [00:21:20.818] just kind of keep Mac [00:21:22.759] marking up the articles as [00:21:25.059] you go through and as you're doing this [00:21:27.140] it's keeping track of everything [00:21:29.289] in the background [00:21:31.309] ok. That we're marking up [00:21:34.039] and as you come across something [00:21:39.588] You wanna make sure to grab it [00:21:41.750] Ok because [00:21:43.739] the next time you log in these [00:21:46.140] will have been cleared out. Our highlights [00:21:48.390] and notes are good for the user's current [00:21:51.029] session only [00:21:52.848] meaning that we are not tracking [00:21:55.209] users past their session. We clear out your [00:21:57.368] search history, we start a new [00:21:59.519] session every time when you log [00:22:01.640] in we don't really know [00:22:04.160] that I'm me doing this, it doesn't [00:22:06.469] really know that this is Stacey doing it. [00:22:09.170] So I need to take all this [00:22:11.390] with me before I go and I can [00:22:13.420] do that a couple ways I mentioned the print. [00:22:16.229] Print will bring my highlights and notes. It's [00:22:18.410] gonna highlight the text [00:22:20.500] and the print out. And then at the bottom it [00:22:22.598] reprints the highlighted passages and [00:22:24.650] shows your note. [00:22:26.500] ok? You can also [00:22:29.279] Use it from highlights and notes up in [00:22:31.299] the corner here. You can see I just have [00:22:33.559] one for this article but then it gives me the [00:22:35.588] option of viewing all highlights and notes [00:22:38.318] and we can see the other highlights and notes [00:22:40.459] I've created through those three other articles. [00:22:43.130] And if this is all I need, if I just want my [00:22:45.269] highlights and notes, I can print this, [00:22:47.459] I can send two [00:22:49.489] which is gonna send it over to google drive [00:22:51.759] for me or one drive or email, [00:22:54.459] And this is a really handy feature. It's [00:22:56.588] a great way to kind of keep track of all your research [00:22:58.979] in the cloud if you are a google [00:23:01.160] or Microsoft user [00:23:03.920] and send all your research to one place. [00:23:06.400] Let me show you what. Oops. Didn't quite [00:23:08.608] finish typing the U. R. L. There. [00:23:13.519] You can find it in a data [00:23:15.818] error in a folder named after the database you [00:23:17.910] were using. So Gale and context elementary. [00:23:20.880] There is my highlighted articles [00:23:23.170] that I just sent over. [00:23:27.650] and there they are. [00:23:29.209] And notice how there are links. These are hyperlinks [00:23:31.608] to get back into the full article. If I need [00:23:33.689] that, I can also send [00:23:35.729] the full article over if I go back into [00:23:37.910] another one. [00:23:40.239] OK, we have the send to option [00:23:42.618] here too. So I can send the whole article [00:23:44.630] over if that's what I want. [00:23:46.519] And again, it's gonna land in a folder [00:23:48.779] named after what you're using. So here [00:23:51.019] in my Gale and context elementary, [00:23:53.598] Here's the whole article. If uh [00:23:56.059] let me catch up with me here, [00:23:57.809] it'll be the whole article. It will be if we have [00:23:59.900] the rights to the images. It'll come over too. [00:24:02.059] It'll have the citation in it. It's [00:24:04.430] all gonna be there. [00:24:06.400] it's like it's taken a minute to load [00:24:09.500] well, while it's working on that, [00:24:11.380] once the articles are here, [00:24:14.189] it's mine to do with what I like. [00:24:16.279] So I can take this article, these highlights [00:24:18.769] and move it to a folder. [00:24:20.939] You know, maybe create a new one for my research [00:24:23.380] topic. [00:24:27.900] and [00:24:31.059] It moves it over there. I can [00:24:33.358] go ahead and move this one too. [00:24:38.608] right. And then that's where they live. Once it's [00:24:40.759] here it's mine to do with what I like. So as [00:24:42.838] a student, I can keep this organized [00:24:45.170] by my different projects or my classrooms. [00:24:48.699] It's just going to, oh might [00:24:50.779] be at the bottom here. Where's my newest [00:24:52.858] folder? [00:24:54.239] Oh I might need to refresh. [00:25:02.608] Oh, oh maybe I I'm sorry, I might [00:25:04.618] have put it somewhere else. I thought it was on the home page. [00:25:06.818] Well I'll have you trust me to [00:25:08.910] go with that folder I created but looks [00:25:11.118] like it's lost in my folder structure there. But [00:25:13.608] it's a great way again to keep track of your [00:25:15.618] research and make sure you have access to it any [00:25:17.650] time. But again with [00:25:19.660] highlights and notes you've got [00:25:21.670] to grab it somehow. The [00:25:23.709] articles are gonna blank [00:25:26.140] out again when you leave the database. We [00:25:28.269] just clear everything out. So good [00:25:30.719] thing to keep in mind [00:25:32.509] Right? So there are other [00:25:34.578] ways you can share content too. If [00:25:36.890] I go back, let me go ahead and grab uh Actually [00:25:39.299] let's browse some more. We've gone into [00:25:41.358] a few subject areas actually I'll use animals because [00:25:43.608] again, lots of searches [00:25:45.789] here, so we'll go ahead and grab another one of these. [00:25:49.309] Thanks [00:25:50.939] You can also take [00:25:53.180] advantage say we're gonna Eagles [00:25:55.269] research [00:25:56.390] of sharing content [00:25:58.709] via google classroom if [00:26:00.858] you are a google classroom user, this [00:26:03.130] icon may look familiar if you are [00:26:05.358] basically what it does is take [00:26:07.390] that get link [00:26:09.969] and embed it in a classroom [00:26:12.219] item so you just choose where you want [00:26:14.479] this to go, [00:26:16.088] make it an assignment. And these will be familiar options [00:26:18.719] if you use google classroom [00:26:20.930] and then I'm gonna give a very brief [00:26:23.519] uh bit of instruction here. It's embedded. [00:26:26.598] The link to this Eagles [00:26:28.660] page [00:26:30.910] and just can confirm that it went through [00:26:33.209] and it takes a minute for it to pop up here. I'm always [00:26:35.459] impatient. So I'm gonna go right to the classroom [00:26:37.989] so we can see it embedded there and then with [00:26:40.029] a click your students land right where [00:26:42.088] you want them to. [00:26:43.848] So great way again to get [00:26:45.920] them into library resources. [00:26:50.088] So All right, I'm gonna pop back. I'm gonna close out [00:26:52.189] some of these windows. I've got a lot [00:26:54.299] of them open [00:26:55.848] Alrighty [00:26:57.858] So let me check the chat. We're gonna go ahead and start [00:26:59.939] wrapping up here and I'm gonna check [00:27:02.259] my notes. I think I've covered [00:27:04.390] everything I wanted to. [00:27:07.750] in good shape. So, [00:27:11.890] that was a look at how you can kind [00:27:14.029] of spark research skills and help grow [00:27:16.088] research skills and Gale in context. Elementary [00:27:18.959] just a quick recap of the different [00:27:21.088] ways you can share content. So get link [00:27:23.189] is again kind of the most universal [00:27:25.299] to U. R. You can put it wherever you need [00:27:27.568] it. send to google drive [00:27:29.868] and Microsoft one drive. Especially [00:27:32.150] because they are often in everybody's workflow [00:27:34.588] already. They're using them for one reason [00:27:36.809] or another, whether it be personal [00:27:38.930] or school or work related. A lot [00:27:41.219] of these are familiar tools and folks already [00:27:43.358] are comfortable, can just send our content [00:27:45.640] there and continue to work with it. [00:27:47.838] And then of course google co uh classroom [00:27:50.420] is linked right in our resources, but you can [00:27:52.449] actually import content into other learning [00:27:54.509] management systems like canvas and [00:27:56.719] and school if you're in a school setting. [00:27:59.108] Uh blackboard, you know, tends to be more [00:28:01.219] academic, we can work with that. There are, [00:28:03.358] you know, lots of these out there that that we can work [00:28:05.469] with and pull the content into so you can get it into people's [00:28:07.789] hands easily. [00:28:09.939] so when questions should come up [00:28:11.959] you can feel free to reach out to your Gale team. [00:28:14.180] We've got lots of great on demand, Support [00:28:16.459] for our resources out at support dot Gale [00:28:18.598] dot com slash n. M. When [00:28:20.838] you get to that page, it will prompt you to choose [00:28:22.979] your library from the list and then we customize [00:28:25.699] the support site to your library. So [00:28:28.160] you will get support from wherever you have [00:28:30.180] from gale. Uh which is really nice. [00:28:32.219] We have over 100 databases, so this would just [00:28:34.400] pair down to the ones that that you actually have [00:28:36.509] in your collection. [00:28:37.890] and I've just linked a bunch of um listed [00:28:40.279] a bunch of the Gale and context elementary [00:28:42.449] uh support we have but there's much more than [00:28:44.529] this, we have training uh decks [00:28:46.930] that you can use if you're gonna go out and maybe [00:28:49.660] spread the word about this resource, we've got [00:28:51.729] a presentation that you can just customize to suit [00:28:53.799] your needs and you're off and running. [00:28:55.719] We have tip sheets, we have recorded sessions [00:28:58.279] and we've got lots of great free marketing materials [00:29:00.578] that you can use um and share [00:29:03.000] uh the or spread the word about these [00:29:05.160] resources. So lots [00:29:07.299] of good stuff out there, no need to recreate [00:29:09.318] the wheel. We've got a lot of good stuff going there. [00:29:11.858] but then of course when you want to talk to a person [00:29:14.338] you can feel free to reach out to your team at gale. Uh Our tech [00:29:23.000] support is available, they're at the 800 [00:29:25.289] number, you can also email them [00:29:27.459] and then your account rep is always a good person to [00:29:29.519] get to know uh at Yale. They can, [00:29:31.630] you know, help advise you if you're looking to Bring [00:29:33.703] any other resources [00:29:35.354] but I would say probably the best person to get [00:29:37.505] to know at Gale is your customer success manager. [00:29:39.693] They just help you be successful with the resources. [00:29:42.074] They can help you with uh marketing ideas, [00:29:44.324] they can take your feedback on the resources. [00:29:47.184] They are really just a huge [00:29:49.384] font of knowledge and if they don't have the [00:29:51.404] answer they know where to go to get it. So [00:29:53.684] excellent resource in them [00:29:56.618] so do not suffer in [00:29:58.709] silence again. Do reach out. [00:30:01.449] and with that I'll say thank you so much for tuning [00:30:03.729] again, tuning in. Uh Again I apologize [00:30:06.189] for the mix up. Uh that was completely my fault. [00:30:08.269] I am not very time zone friendly [00:30:10.430] so I apologize uh for starting the session [00:30:12.689] an hour early and I'm being surprised when nobody was [00:30:14.789] there. So [00:30:15.828] my mistake. Uh but do keep [00:30:18.049] an eye out once I've made that mistake, I don't tend to [00:30:20.068] make it again. So um to keep [00:30:22.299] an eye out for other sessions. We have a few [00:30:24.439] more coming up this month to help support the start [00:30:26.549] of the school season. Uh But then you can [00:30:28.630] also just keep in mind our general calendar [00:30:30.809] where we offer uh really interesting sessions [00:30:33.239] uh all the time. So definitely [00:30:35.799] keep an eye out for those and of course we record all [00:30:38.000] of these as well so you can always tune in after. It's not [00:30:40.108] something you're able to attend live. So [00:30:42.368] Thanks everybody for tuning in. I'm gonna stick [00:30:44.400] around and see if there are any questions. I'm happy to take [00:30:46.689] those. But again, thanks so much for [00:30:48.739] your time today and hopefully we'll see you on another [00:30:50.769] session down the road. Thanks everybody
