[00:00:04.788] Thank you again for joining our session [00:00:07.000] today today. We're going to be taking a look [00:00:09.239] at how you can leverage your Elementary [00:00:11.550] Gale ebooks through Gale and context elementary. [00:00:14.500] That's a mouthful, but it's a [00:00:16.519] nice session we're going to go through today. My name [00:00:18.708] is Amber Winters and I am your training consultant. [00:00:22.638] So brief agenda here. We're going to be on [00:00:24.888] the line for 30 minutes today. So first, [00:00:27.280] I will just very briefly highlight [00:00:29.298] Gale ebooks and Gale In Context [00:00:31.440] Elementary just in case you're new to the resources [00:00:33.899] or in case you just need a quick refresher, [00:00:36.298] but we'll spend the majority of the time actually [00:00:38.359] walking through gale and context elementary [00:00:41.048] and how your Gale ebooks look within that platform. [00:00:44.478] Finally, at the end of the session, we should [00:00:46.668] have time for any questions you have [00:00:48.770] feel free to put them into the Q and A though. [00:00:50.779] And I should be able to answer them as we move along [00:00:52.990] forward and then we'll have some wrap up content [00:00:55.250] information, contact information for [00:00:57.340] you at the end of the session as well. [00:01:00.368] So let's just go ahead and get started here. So Galan [00:01:02.618] context elementary, if you're slightly less familiar [00:01:04.930] with this resource is obviously going [00:01:07.058] to be K five focused. And we do [00:01:09.159] include quite a, a variety of content. [00:01:11.730] We have the obvious, you know, reference works [00:01:13.900] and things like that. But we also have multimedia [00:01:16.409] materials like videos and pictures and audio [00:01:18.659] files. We also include some current [00:01:20.888] magazines and newspapers. So it's kind of a really [00:01:23.349] all encompassing resource focus [00:01:25.588] on elementary curriculum hitting [00:01:27.959] kind of the main subjects like science, [00:01:30.099] social studies, literature social [00:01:32.719] and emotional learning, [00:01:34.579] things like that, as well as art and [00:01:36.659] music, all that good stuff. And within [00:01:39.028] this platform, we do have some great elementary friendly [00:01:41.409] tools like highlights and notes as well as [00:01:43.519] a text to speech reader. So if you have struggling [00:01:45.778] readers, they'll be able to have articles [00:01:48.299] read to them right here on this platform. [00:01:51.948] And Gale Ebooks is a separate [00:01:54.109] platform that we've actually worked to get integrate [00:01:56.739] within Gale In Context: Elementary. So Gale [00:01:59.198] ebooks are going to be all of your full [00:02:01.308] text ebooks purchased through Gale [00:02:03.808] and they are uniquely curated for [00:02:05.980] you. So as we go through this session today, I [00:02:08.069] will most likely have different ebooks than you. [00:02:10.250] So if you're following along with me and [00:02:12.330] can't find an ebook I clicked into, most [00:02:14.669] likely it's just not part of your collection. So [00:02:16.808] it will be different for you depending on what you're clicking [00:02:18.939] through. And one key difference. I do want [00:02:21.149] to point out if you're on the Gale Ebooks platform, [00:02:23.899] that's going to include all of the ebooks [00:02:26.069] in your collection. So if you have ebooks for [00:02:28.118] higher level kids, maybe [00:02:30.550] high school level or maybe you have PD [00:02:32.699] ebooks, just be [00:02:34.750] careful with clicking directly into gil ebooks. [00:02:37.028] You may see some of those as opposed to just strictly [00:02:39.569] the K five ebooks that we're going to take [00:02:41.588] a look at today that are found within Gil and Context [00:02:43.778] Elementary. [00:02:45.639] So excuse me, [00:02:47.750] our integration again is just K five [00:02:49.838] E books. We have them tagged in internally. [00:02:52.179] So you don't need to worry about making sure only [00:02:54.588] your K five ebooks are getting into Galan [00:02:56.719] context Elementary. It flows over there [00:02:58.808] automatically for you. There's literally nothing [00:03:01.278] you have to do. Just click in and enjoy. [00:03:04.050] And what's great is your students are going to stay [00:03:06.250] within Gale and context elementary if they do [00:03:08.389] decide to click into one of these ebooks. [00:03:10.710] So you don't have to open up, you know, two [00:03:12.778] different browsers or have two different [00:03:14.919] tabs. Open, one with Gil ebooks, one with Gallon [00:03:17.050] Context Elementary. Your students are [00:03:19.129] going to land in this one spot, be [00:03:21.250] able to navigate through anything they want [00:03:23.389] to look at right here on that one page. So it makes [00:03:25.588] it a lot easier for you to get students [00:03:27.929] engaged because you're not teaching them how to use [00:03:30.088] two platforms and you're not reminding them. Well, [00:03:32.360] we need to look at ebooks. So let's go to this page [00:03:34.368] or what we're looking at. We wanna find simple [00:03:36.449] images. We need to go over here. It's all [00:03:38.580] combined for you. So you can just get students [00:03:40.669] in this resource and they can just go, [00:03:43.129] they can take off and explore, find [00:03:45.210] the information that they need. [00:03:48.659] That's enough of me talking. Let's go ahead and actually [00:03:50.689] jump in and take a look at how this integration [00:03:52.719] works. And as I'm switching over [00:03:54.889] here, I haven't seen any questions come in, but [00:03:57.000] I will just stop here. Do we have [00:03:59.118] any questions before we get going? [00:04:04.189] Ok. I don't see anything going [00:04:06.508] coming in. So let's go ahead and get started here. [00:04:08.689] So I'm on my home page of Gale and Context Elementary. [00:04:11.399] I already signed in here. just to get [00:04:13.479] us going. [00:04:14.699] And if you have access to ebooks [00:04:16.730] through Gale and I do just briefly want to point [00:04:18.910] out it is strictly through Gale. So you're [00:04:20.970] not going to find ebooks from other vendors within [00:04:23.290] Gale and Context Elementary, you're just going to see [00:04:26.149] what you've purchased from Gale. So just as AAA [00:04:28.199] point out there, [00:04:29.769] if you do have ebooks that are linked [00:04:32.069] to Gale Contact Elementary, you'll see you have a [00:04:34.100] books tab here [00:04:36.119] and if you're following along within your instance [00:04:38.259] and you don't see a books tab here, that means [00:04:40.509] that right now, you don't have any K five ebooks, [00:04:42.920] which is fine at the end of the session. I'm going to [00:04:44.959] tell you who to get into contact to, with, [00:04:47.509] to get some of those. [00:04:49.350] But you will have a tab listed here [00:04:51.569] that says books. [00:04:54.129] Let me click through here [00:04:55.838] and now all of your K, five ebooks are [00:04:57.850] going to be loaded up here. And again, most [00:05:00.119] likely yours looks a little bit different than mine [00:05:02.559] because I just have my own collection built [00:05:04.579] out. But you'll see here, it's organized [00:05:06.928] by different books, shelves or different [00:05:09.189] topics here. You'll see, we have arts biography, [00:05:11.298] all that great stuff. [00:05:13.540] And if you do have a pretty extensive list [00:05:15.778] of ebooks, your students may want to take [00:05:17.790] a look at specific bookshelves. So [00:05:19.829] you'll see up top here, we have just the one filter [00:05:22.319] on this section. When I drop down, [00:05:24.480] I can choose whichever bookshelf I want [00:05:26.519] to look at. So if I strictly want to look, [00:05:28.689] let's say at biographies, I can do [00:05:30.838] that and I've pulled forward. Just [00:05:33.238] my biography is listed here. So I'll be able to [00:05:35.278] kind of click through and see whoever I [00:05:37.298] want to take a look at [00:05:42.059] and I can jump back to all right up top here. [00:05:44.160] If I just want to take a look at all of them again, [00:05:46.459] it's a really nice, neat way to find content. [00:05:48.819] And if you want your students just strictly looking [00:05:51.309] at ebooks, maybe you don't want them digging into the [00:05:53.379] gale and context elementary content. Right now, [00:05:56.129] you'll see. We do include a search books option [00:05:58.660] right here on our books tab. So [00:06:00.738] if you just want them to find full [00:06:02.798] ebook text, you don't want them to take a look [00:06:04.829] at anything else. Right now, this may be the [00:06:06.920] way to navigate to that. Just have them click into [00:06:09.059] books [00:06:10.199] and then they can search the through the books [00:06:12.298] right here. [00:06:14.108] I'm not going to click into a book right now though because [00:06:16.199] I want to show you what it looks like. when [00:06:18.209] your students find a topic they're interested in, when [00:06:20.259] they run a search, maybe they find a topic [00:06:22.269] page. I wanna show you what that integration looks [00:06:24.399] like. So today, I'm going to run [00:06:26.449] a search on Ancient Egypt who [00:06:28.678] doesn't love learning about Ancient Egypt, right? [00:06:30.928] I will point out we do still [00:06:33.079] have predictive text listed here. [00:06:35.160] So as your students are typing in, [00:06:37.129] they can take a look at the different topic pages [00:06:39.338] we have created. So the topic pages [00:06:41.449] are going to be the organized content [00:06:43.858] sets for some of the top searched and top [00:06:46.230] used terms within the resource. So [00:06:48.670] for the majority of the [00:06:50.829] topics, they're going to be pretty closely [00:06:53.028] aligned to elementary curriculum [00:06:55.170] because that's what's being studied in [00:06:57.230] this resource. So again, I chose [00:06:59.379] Ancient Egypt. So let's stick with that. [00:07:01.389] Here and [00:07:04.329] we do have a topic page for Ancient Egypt [00:07:06.459] here. So, scrolling down, I'll just briefly [00:07:08.470] remind everyone what the kind of organization [00:07:11.000] is, at the top of a [00:07:13.100] topic page. You'll see, we have just a brief overview [00:07:15.459] of whatever topic you're going to be learning about. [00:07:17.540] In this case, Ancient Egypt [00:07:19.889] underneath here. You'll see, we have some quick [00:07:22.088] facts, [00:07:23.059] just some interesting things to get students [00:07:25.160] engaged and then scrolling down. [00:07:27.209] You'll see all of our different [00:07:29.059] content types are listed here [00:07:31.170] in these different individual buckets here. So [00:07:33.639] you'll see, I can pull out videos if I'm looking [00:07:35.730] for a video specifically, I want [00:07:37.850] to move forward and look at related topics. We [00:07:39.899] have those listed at the bottom of the page here. [00:07:42.970] Our pictures are pulled out individually [00:07:45.670] and what do I want to point out to you? Let me scroll to the [00:07:47.678] top here as you'll notice we have two different [00:07:50.100] content types. We have book articles [00:07:52.778] and then we have books. [00:07:54.670] So book articles are going to be [00:07:56.920] reference works, things like that [00:07:58.939] that have been built into Gale and context [00:08:01.319] elementary. So that's like the standard [00:08:03.488] content that they're going to find within this platform. [00:08:05.649] If you didn't have access to ebooks, [00:08:07.850] we call them book articles just because that's a [00:08:09.858] little bit more inviting, a little more friendly [00:08:11.939] than calling them reference works for students. [00:08:14.699] So book articles, articles are going to [00:08:16.759] be those shorter, you know, one page [00:08:18.778] reference works, giving background [00:08:21.040] about something. [00:08:22.829] Books is where you're going to find your integrated [00:08:25.329] ebooks. So if you want students to view [00:08:27.509] a whole ebook, as opposed to just taking [00:08:29.769] a look at an article, [00:08:31.369] you're going to want to take a look at books here. [00:08:34.269] So let's do that today. [00:08:35.960] Again, if you're following along, you may not [00:08:38.048] see any books listed on your, [00:08:40.090] your instance, you may see more than what [00:08:42.099] I have just depends on your collection. [00:08:44.788] But when I click into books here, I do want to [00:08:46.840] point out we do have a lot of filters here on this [00:08:49.038] right hand side. So if you want your students [00:08:51.389] to start kind of engaging in more in depth research, [00:08:53.849] you want them to understand how filters work. [00:08:56.330] They can do that within ebooks here. [00:08:59.450] I'm just going to leave it because you'll, they only [00:09:01.469] have 11 E books here. [00:09:03.548] But if they find one they're interested and you'll see, [00:09:05.678] they always, show with [00:09:08.210] the, um, excuse me, they always [00:09:10.440] show with the cover of each of these ebooks [00:09:12.590] here. So they're always going to get this visual as [00:09:14.668] they start to click in. We'll just click into [00:09:16.729] the first one. Discovering Ancient Egypt. [00:09:20.739] Here we go. And the first thing I want to point [00:09:22.759] out for you on this page is you notice we [00:09:24.940] jumped immediately to the first [00:09:27.298] page of text for this. We skipped [00:09:29.349] over the, you know, all the front matter, [00:09:31.450] we skipped over the table of contents, all that good [00:09:33.460] stuff because we've decided we want to direct [00:09:35.609] students to exactly where they need to be initially. [00:09:38.298] So they don't need to worry about clicking forward through [00:09:40.389] that. you know, that informational [00:09:42.678] piece that they're most likely not looking for. [00:09:44.989] They're going to be taken directly to chapter [00:09:47.369] one or section one or whatever the beginning of [00:09:49.479] the text is. [00:09:52.000] And we do default here to showing this [00:09:54.139] kind of ebook view. So this [00:09:56.190] is what you would expect kind of reading through an ebook. [00:09:58.729] You'll see. We have options up top here to have [00:10:00.899] this to read to us. I can make it bigger. [00:10:04.469] I can also zoom in and out. Let me pop [00:10:07.058] that up here [00:10:11.808] so I can go through and edit that way. And we [00:10:13.840] do also have this in an html [00:10:16.440] text view. So if I wanted [00:10:18.469] to get to that, I can hit text view right up [00:10:20.599] top here, you'll see this little book [00:10:22.609] and this is going to [00:10:24.460] let's get to a page that has a little more text [00:10:26.489] on it. There we go. [00:10:27.960] So this is going to pull it forward in an [00:10:29.979] html formatting. So you're not getting [00:10:32.178] the kind of standard ebook [00:10:34.548] look, you're going to get the, just the text [00:10:36.599] on the page. We do include any pictures we have [00:10:38.609] here. See if we, I chose [00:10:41.080] a, an ebook that doesn't have very much text. There [00:10:43.178] we go. So this is a little more text. [00:10:45.330] So we do have that version. [00:10:47.519] This is really nice. If your students need some additional [00:10:50.048] accessibility support, you'll [00:10:52.070] see when I clicked into that text view, I got some [00:10:54.139] additional tools up top here. So [00:10:56.359] this is where you're going to be able to translate your article. [00:10:58.609] You're going to be able to choose your different font [00:11:00.820] colors and [00:11:02.320] fun option and spacing all that good stuff. [00:11:04.908] So if you have students who need that additional [00:11:07.058] support, you may need to transition [00:11:09.119] over from the book view to the text [00:11:11.178] view. And if I want to jump back [00:11:13.298] here, you'll see right up top, [00:11:15.609] I've got my book view listed here and I can click into [00:11:17.779] that. And now again, I'm taken back [00:11:19.879] to kind of that native interface, that kind [00:11:22.129] of standard ebook look that you would expect [00:11:25.779] and your students can cite this content [00:11:27.840] right here no matter what view they're in. If they're in [00:11:29.879] the text view or the book view, we have that pulled [00:11:32.009] forward for them [00:11:34.250] right next door that we do have a get link [00:11:36.340] option. This is really nice. Of course, if your [00:11:38.359] students found something they want to share. But [00:11:40.369] it's also really helpful for you as an educator. [00:11:42.629] If you're pulling content for your students to take a look [00:11:44.668] at, maybe you're going to if you're a library [00:11:46.960] and you're going to post it on your library's website or your social [00:11:49.269] media account. If you're a teacher, [00:11:51.379] maybe you're putting it in a syllabus or you're attaching [00:11:53.590] it to your L MS, you're throwing [00:11:55.788] it into the Google classroom. This link [00:11:57.928] is a persistent URL that's going to take [00:12:00.019] your students directly to this page. So [00:12:02.729] it's a really nice feature. Again, if you [00:12:04.840] find something great that you want to hold on to, [00:12:06.950] you can use this, get link, save it for later. [00:12:09.229] When your students click into this, they're going to be pulled [00:12:12.190] directly to this page and they'll [00:12:14.259] be able to kind of click through and take a look [00:12:16.298] at everything [00:12:19.349] on this left hand side. Here, we have a few [00:12:21.509] more tools available for your students. [00:12:24.190] The first one is going to be the table of [00:12:26.269] contents again. Remember we actually skipped [00:12:28.489] over all of this and started [00:12:30.668] off here on the introduction. [00:12:32.779] So we skipped over all of this stuff that most likely [00:12:35.009] they're not going to want to see. [00:12:36.979] But if they do want to jump back and see it, we do have [00:12:39.070] it available for them, but they can also jump [00:12:41.288] forward to any piece of content [00:12:43.349] they think is interesting. [00:12:47.879] We also have the option to search here within this [00:12:49.979] ebook. If they're looking for something specific, [00:12:52.038] this is only going to search through this [00:12:54.119] entire ebook. It's not going to pull forward any content [00:12:56.519] from outside of this [00:12:59.979] underneath. We have a dictionary I'm sure [00:13:02.158] you understand how that works. [00:13:04.000] But below that, this is a really nice [00:13:06.219] feature that we have here. We have a more [00:13:08.519] from this bookshelf option. [00:13:10.820] So this ebook has been tagged [00:13:12.879] as a history e-book, which of course makes sense. [00:13:15.099] It's about Ancient Egypt. [00:13:16.869] But you'll see, I can scroll down here and now I have access [00:13:19.250] to all of the other history [00:13:21.869] ebooks listed here of course, I have [00:13:24.460] more history than just Ancient Egypt. [00:13:26.469] So you'll see things like Pompeii and all that good [00:13:28.548] stuff, but I can open this bookshelf [00:13:31.229] here and be pulled forward [00:13:33.389] to all of my history ebooks [00:13:35.570] again. Most likely yours looks different, [00:13:38.090] but I can be pulled forward and kind of start [00:13:40.229] to take a look at that. But let's [00:13:42.288] jump back. I'm going to stay on this ebook. [00:13:45.250] But that feature again is found right here. We [00:13:47.399] can pop that open at any time to take a look at [00:13:49.440] that bookshelf. [00:13:52.279] And you'll see, we do include some citation [00:13:54.779] information here as well. It's not the full [00:13:56.899] citation [00:13:57.960] like you're going to find up here in this toolbar, [00:14:00.190] but we do include a bit of information [00:14:02.210] here as well. [00:14:06.629] Now, moving on from here, I will, [00:14:08.849] quickly point out that you can send [00:14:10.960] this information over to Google classroom. You'll [00:14:13.038] see, I have my Google Classroom icon [00:14:15.210] up top. So if you want to send [00:14:17.308] this directly over as opposed to using this [00:14:19.389] get link feature. [00:14:20.729] You can select Google classroom and you'll be able [00:14:22.783] to, you know, create an account or create an account, [00:14:24.994] create a lesson, ask [00:14:27.224] a question, create a discussion, post all [00:14:29.303] that good stuff you'll be able to do by [00:14:31.504] clicking that Google classroom icon. I'm [00:14:33.594] going to stay out about it today just for the sake of time. [00:14:35.825] But it is right there up top. [00:14:39.649] So moving on from here, I can [00:14:41.658] really easily jump back to my Ancient [00:14:43.788] Asia topic page if I want to. [00:14:45.879] But you'll see, I also have this option that just [00:14:48.070] populated here next to the search bar [00:14:50.700] that lists all books. [00:14:52.739] So again, if I want to get back to just taking [00:14:54.940] a look at books, again, I can do that [00:14:57.009] right here and you'll see it, pops me forward to this, [00:14:59.330] page that we were already on this little [00:15:01.389] tab here that's found right on the home [00:15:03.418] page. So it brought me that back right [00:15:05.440] here. [00:15:06.940] And now again, I can take a look at all of the different [00:15:09.320] ebooks that I have available [00:15:11.200] for my account. [00:15:19.769] And now that's the information I have for you today. [00:15:21.969] We do have some time left over for questions. [00:15:24.369] I'm going to pop back here into my slides [00:15:26.379] just to give you some follow up info. [00:15:28.509] But what's nice is the integration is very [00:15:30.808] sleek and it's very kind of easy to walk [00:15:32.950] through. So it doesn't take much time once [00:15:34.979] your students kind of get the hang of it. You're not going [00:15:37.019] to need to remind them how to do everything. [00:15:39.058] you know, every time you sign in it's one [00:15:41.158] sign in one spot they can click [00:15:43.219] through and look at just ebooks, they can take [00:15:45.250] a look at ebooks and content or they can just [00:15:47.298] take a look at the native gale and context [00:15:49.389] elementary content. So they've got [00:15:51.538] quite a few different ways to access all of [00:15:53.558] this great information. [00:15:57.119] But I'm going to wait here for any questions [00:15:59.619] while I do. I've got some wrap up information [00:16:01.678] for you.
